It’s official: Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State

Posted by | December 13, 2016 06:24 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

The ExxonMobile chief is Trump’s choice to be Secretary of State.

In naming him, the president-elect is dismissing bipartisan concerns that Mr. Tillerson, the globe-trotting leader of an energy giant, has a too-cozy relationship with Vladimir V. Putin, the president of Russia.

A statement from Mr. Trump’s transition office early Tuesday brought to an end his public and chaotic deliberations over the nation’s top diplomat — a process that at times veered from rewarding Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of his most loyal supporters, to musing about whether Mitt Romney, one of his most vicious critics, might be forgiven.

Instead, Mr. Trump has decided to risk what looks to be a bruising confirmation fight in the Senate.

In the past several days, Republican and Democratic lawmakers had warned that Mr. Tillerson would face intense scrutiny over his two-decade relationship with Russia, which awarded him its Order of Friendship in 2013, and with Mr. Putin.

The hearings will also put a focus on Exxon Mobil’s business dealings with Moscow. The company has billions of dollars in oil contracts that can go forward only if the United States lifts sanctions against Russia, and Mr. Tillerson’s stake in Russia’s energy industry could create a very blurry line between his interests as an oilman and his role as America’s leading diplomat.

I hope Putin offered Trump a cigarette when he was done, or at least called him in the morning. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8c8078042787b60b528fbee7a4a043d66db39ea25456056c4525eb1f55522309.png

It’s important that Trump’s Secretary of State be chummy with Putin, since Donnie will be getting all of his foreign policy marching orders from Moscow.

“Merkel and Hollande support sanction extensions against Russia”

Putin should get a Nobel Peace Prize. After numerous warring factions caused 450,000 deaths in the Syrian Civil War, and Obama did nothing, it was Putin who ended it, thereby saving countless additional lives.

      • bpollen December 13th, 2016 at 16:09

Putin ended the civil war? What did the military do while Putin was doing all this work?

      • whatthe46 December 13th, 2016 at 16:19

funny how you all made the claim that Obama wasn’t tough on putin, but, you’re ok with them interfering with our elections and tRump being in bed with him and his SOS is putins friend. take your phony support and shove it up your hypocritical asses.

Who is “you all”? Please don’t lump me in with any political party. I speak only for myself.

          • whatthe46 December 13th, 2016 at 16:35

i most certainly will lump you in.

Lumping people instead of treating them as individuals is PRECISELY what’s wrong with racism, sexism, and all other forms of prejudice. So now we know what kind of person you are.

              • whatthe46 December 13th, 2016 at 21:50

There is probably a dozen experienced senior staff members at the State Department that could step right in and do the job

It’s all fun and games ’till somebody faces a confirmation hearing…

    Feeling stupid yet Trump voters?
    Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rice, these recent
nominees collapsed the economy and led
to millions of people losing their lives,
    Trump’s current nominees could make
    their record pale in comparison.

SO WHAT, Trump has more millionaires, so there

  10. Ed VanDyke December 13th, 2016 at 18:21

C’mon, Trump. What were you thinking?! He could make you sooo much richer, and do sooo much more direct harm to America as Secretary of the Interior… ;)

  11. amersham1046 December 13th, 2016 at 18:29

You could sell tickets to the confirmation hearings, they would be the hottest tickets in DC

Trump met today with Jim Brown and Kanye West, interesting. Nothing on Alan dot com about it. I was encouraged to see Trump talking to members of the entertainment community and showing interest in improving living conditions in the inner cities. Education and jobs are the priorities of the incoming administration. I personally would like to see all Americans enjoy a better quality of life and hope that this meeting today leads to improvements for all Americans in all situations.

“Trump met today with Jim Brown and Kanye West,”

      Feeling charitable today I see.
Take that quote to breitbart and see how fast and un-charitable our fellow citizens devolve into what’s really on their minds in their comments.

Maybe you need to go there and spread a little sunshine…Good luck.

    • Um Cara December 14th, 2016 at 11:34

It’s true that Alan’s little blog doesn’t report on every meeting Trump has. No idea who Jim Brown is, but I’ve heard of that Kanye dude. He seems like someone a game show host would get along with, and almost as dislikeable a person as Trump – and probably the only human on the planet as narcissistic as Trump.

I’m sure they each spent as much time as they possibly could talking about themselves – not sure how newsworthy that is, but there you go.

Hey now. Everyone knows that photo-ops with entertainers are much more important than intelligence briefings.
