TX gov says he’ll ban sanctuary cities

While major cities across the country plan to defy Trump on immigration, Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he’ll ban them.

“I’m going to sign a law that bans sanctuary cities,” Abbott tweeted on Sunday.

“Also I’ve already issued an order cutting funding to sanctuary cities.”

Abbott was responding to a Twitter user who questioned whether the Texas governor could do anything to reverse Austin’s pledge to remain a sanctuary city.

    He just wants to hurt the economy in liberal Texas cities. He really is a horrible governor. He doesn’t care about Texas or it’s people. He is just a pawn of the oligarchy that wants to extract as much wealth as possible from the %99. Anything goes for him, hurt Texans, destroy the environment, it doesn’t matter as long as the money flows to the top.

    “I’m going to sign a law that bans sanctuary cities,” Abbott tweeted on Sunday. That’s assuming that first, the Texas lege considers such a bill in its next session and second that such a bill is passed. Not necessarily a given. As for his second statement, even in Texas the guv does not have the power to unilaterally “issue orders to cut off funding” to Texas cities. As usual Abbott is just blowing smoke to keep his talibagger base happy but now he can try to impress Herr Drumpf at the same time.

        I’ve lived in Texas the last 36 years but I guess it’s not obvious. The lege didn’t consider this issue last session because the Tx House resisted as did many business interests. That’s also why a special session wasn’t called. Not a slam dunk by any means. There are too many influential business interests that need the undocumented labor.

          Certainly the business folks blocked Rick Perry from doing anything serious about undocumented labor, especially Bob Perry of Perry Homes and Charles Butt of HEB, However, with the growth of the Tea Party in Texas, the fear Abbott has of having Dan Patrick run against him, and the emboldening of harsh actions with Trump’s election I think there will be little push back to Abbott’s plans. And I have lived in Texas for all 4 of my 65 years.
