Carson to lead HUD

Posted by | November 23, 2016 17:03 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Ben Carson didn’t, and then did, want a job in the Trump administration. He turned down Health, Education and Welfare, which made more sense, since he’s a doctor. Housing and Urban Development seems a stretch.

A spokesperson for Ben Carson confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that Carson was offered the HUD secretary post, and has accepted it.

Carson eluded to the decision earlier Wednesday when he posted on Facebook, “After serious discussions with the Trump transition team, I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner cities great for everyone.” He went on to say, “An announcement is forthcoming about my role in helping make America great again.”
President-Elect Trump formally offered the job to the retired neurosurgeon on Tuesday.

The government should not assume that everyone who lives in the inner cities wishes to remain there. If a single parent or a couple living in an inner city with a high crime rate would like to move to a safer place for the sake of their children, I would have absolutely no problem with my tax dollars being used to help them start a new life elsewhere.

In Ben Franklin’s day, cities were very different than today. We have regulations governing the conditions under which zoo animals can be kept. If you tried to keep zoo animals in some of our inner cities, the government would shut you down because the conditions are nothing like the natural habitat in which the species evolved.

People worry about the effects of noise on marine mammals living in our oceans. People worry about chickens being kept in cramped quarters. I’m all for free-range chickens, but how about free-range children? Some of our inner cities are simply not suitable places to raise children. If someone wishes to move out of an inner city but lacks the means to do so, I think it would make sense to look for ways to help facilitate that, especially if there are children involved.

If an inner city family moved next door to you, you would be the first person to hang out your confederate flag.

Wow. If you knew me, you wouldn’t say that.

I just spent the day with one of my best friends. We live in rural PA, in coal country. His daughter married a man from Tanzania that she met in college. My friend and his wife are planning to travel with their daughter and son-in-law to Tanzania this summer, to meet the in-laws. Another close, rural friend, who was best man in MY wedding, has a black son-in-law who grew up in Jamaica. His daughter and son-in-law live in The Bronx. They met when she was teaching with Teach for America in rural Mississippi. My older sister married a black man decades ago, so I have mixed-race nephews and nieces. Sorry to rain on your parade, but you don’t know anything about me. There is no “typical” rural person, any more than there is a “typical” inner city person. We’re much more diverse and open-minded than you seem to think.

!n 2012, 42% of blacks owned homes, with 27.5% owning 5 or more units. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/01f70009b39335b94ec15ffc01c7056a5f60d79b8919c91bb708573436384d20.jpg

Hmmmm… I am interpreting the Units in Structure category differently.

I think it means that 55.6% of blacks live in structures containing one unit, 13% live in structures containing 2 to 4 units, and 27.5% live in structures containing 5 or more units.

Excerpt from a Feb 2016 article at inequality.org:

“African Americans, despite making up 13 percent of the population, own less than 1 percent of rural land in the country. The combined value of this land: $ 14 billion. White Americans, by comparison, own more than 98 percent of U.S. land amounting to 856 million acres with a total worth of over $1 trillion.”

        Excerpt from Oct 2013 article:

42 Million African Americans Own Only 0.33 Percent Of America’s Lands

“Healthy Solutions reports that less than 2 percent of farms today are operated by African Americans in comparison to 14 percent in 1920.”

  6. StoneyCurtisll November 24th, 2016 at 00:25

Ben Carson thinks the pyramids were built for grain storage..
And could easily be converted to Public Housing..
Add a “yuugh” TRUMP sign, and it would be a success..(a year later it would be bankrupt)

    • oldfart November 24th, 2016 at 00:31

I’m thinkin that tRumps gastralogist is going to be surgeon general…maybe ?

    • robert November 24th, 2016 at 03:40

Yea those pyramid weight bearing chambers can fool you into thinking it used to have a motorized grain conveyor belt in it
