Trump’s conflicts of interest without precedent

Posted by | November 19, 2016 14:50 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Those who spend years yelling about the Clintons’ conflicts of interest have so far been silent about Trump.

No laws prohibit Trump from involving himself in his private company, the Trump Organization, while serving in the highest public office.

And Trump has so far resisted the long-standing presidential tradition of giving his holdings to an independent manager, stoking worries of conflicts of interests over his businesses’ many financial and foreign ties.

Trump’s business empire of hotels, golf courses and licensing deals in the U.S. and abroad, some of which have benefited from tax breaks or government subsidies, represents an ethical minefield for a commander in chief who would oversee the U.S. budget and foreign relations, some analysts say…

Other Trump companies are partially indebted to banks in Germany and China. On financial disclosure filings, Trump listed involvements in more than 500 companies, some in countries where the U.S. has sensitive diplomatic or financial relationships, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and China.

So what, none of his supporters nor the so-called MSM give a sh!t about ethics or moral behavior. The foxes are going to be completely in charge of the henhouse after Jan 20.

  2. TKList November 19th, 2016 at 15:45

Funny how alan.com did not care about the Clinton’s conflict interest.

    • Budda November 19th, 2016 at 15:58

      Deflection.

      Now about the Dumpsters ethics…

      • TKList November 19th, 2016 at 16:16

        You mean hypocrisy.

        • Suzanne McFly November 19th, 2016 at 17:02

Well you are right on that, it is very hypocritical of you to be aghast over emails but have no problem with the amount of nepotism that will occur when this oaf gets in office. Hillary’s emails had shown no evidence of being intercepted. But now you want to trust people who never had any sort of experience representing constituents or working within the law for the government. They come from a long line of money grubbers, but you like to throw dirt in the air and hope it sticks. So what was Hillary’s conflict of interest in your world?

          • TKList November 20th, 2016 at 03:41

I have a problem with both.

            • Suzanne McFly November 20th, 2016 at 08:20

Well what is the problem you have with Alan posting the damn story then? This is a liberal discussion board, we are inundated with the “terrible” shenanigans Hillary and democrats have done. We come here and bring the republican crimes to light and discuss them, you don’t like this set up? Leave.

Clinton Foundation foreign donations while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State.

            • Suzanne McFly November 20th, 2016 at 08:22

Your PEOTUS is also receiving foreign donations right now and planning on setting up to receive a lot more of these types of donations. Do you go to breitbart and complain about that?

        • Budda November 20th, 2016 at 07:17

          that too

    • anothertoothpick November 19th, 2016 at 17:17

Maybe you missed the part that trump won?

      • TKList November 20th, 2016 at 03:41

Maybe you missed the part that Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State while her conflict of interest was going on.

        • robert November 20th, 2016 at 03:58

How can you blame the media who will most likely get the bad news first or before the bad news happens

Should I be saying the network’s are in business to benefit the people ?

        • anothertoothpick November 20th, 2016 at 06:58

Maybe you missed the part that she is no longer SOS..

Pumpkin head is committing crimes as we speak.

The conflict of interest isn’t about HAVING those businesses, it’s about Trump refusing, at least so far, to make sure that he isn’t able to simultaneously make decisions as President that benefit the companies and operate those companies directly.

There was no reason to talk about conflicts of interest prior to the election, and thus neither Trump’s, nor Clinton’s, potential conflict of interest was relevant.

Trump won, so we now look at whether he will deal appropriately with the conflict of interest.

The only hypocrite, here, is you – the one who, rather than actually looking at an actual conflict of interest, is more concerned with spinning the discussion to be about a potential conflict of interest that never actually occurred, all because the actual problem is about someone who you like better than the other person.

      • TKList November 20th, 2016 at 03:30

Are you forgetting Hillary was Secretary of State while her conflict of interest was going on?

        • Willys41 November 20th, 2016 at 04:51

Too bad none of the right-wing extremists in congress ever actually PROVED anything.

          • TKList November 20th, 2016 at 05:08

        • whatthe46 November 20th, 2016 at 05:15

Being in “a position of power” doesn’t mean there’s a conflict of interest. The issue with the President having these sorts of connections is that he literally makes decisions regarding laws, etc, that affect his own companies, and is able to use insider knowledge that comes with being President to alter his companies’ plans.

Secretary of State only has a very narrow set of responsibilities – to be a conflict of interest, her financial/business situation has to conflict with these responsibilities.

It’s not that hard to find details of what Clinton’s sources of wealth are – she’s consistently disclosed those details, as appropriate (notice that Trump has *still* refused to do likewise).

As an example, in 2011, Bill Clinton (as her spouse, in this consideration) got a small amount of money from Teneo, a merchant banking advisory company, for being on their “advisory board”. No actual conflict, there.

There have certainly been some concerns about *possible* conflicts during her time as Secretary of State. But those are 4 years old, now. And most of them involve claims of a conflict because foreign nations donated money to the Clinton Foundation (never mind that none of that money goes to Hillary or Bill Clinton), or payment to Bill Clinton for speeches, or things like that.

The claim of conflict of interest always comes from the idea of bribery, rather than manipulation of the system. Trump will have to make decisions that directly impact his own companies. Clinton didn’t have that issue.

And once again, I can’t help but notice that you’re still attacking Clinton, yet have nothing of substance to say on Trump’s conflict of interest.

Any action will be stonewalled by Congress, Trump will make millions

  4. Willys41 November 20th, 2016 at 04:51

Trump has no conflicts of interest. His only interests are those that serve himself. And that’s been painfully obvious since he started campaigning.
