‘Shocking upset’: Hillary Clinton concedes to Donald Trump
Donald John Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States on Tuesday in a stunning culmination of an explosive, populist and polarizing campaign that took relentless aim at the institutions and long-held ideals of American democracy.
The surprise outcome, defying late polls that showed Hillary Clinton with a modest but persistent edge, threatened convulsions throughout the country and the world, where skeptics had watched with alarm as Mr. Trump’s unvarnished overtures to disillusioned voters took hold.
The triumph for Mr. Trump, 70, a real estate developer-turned-reality television star with no government experience, was a powerful rejection of the establishment forces that had assembled against him, from the world of business to government, and the consensus they had forged on everything from trade to immigration.
The results amounted to a repudiation, not only of Mrs. Clinton, but of President Obama, whose legacy is suddenly imperiled. And it was a decisive demonstration of power by a largely overlooked coalition of mostly blue-collar white and working-class voters who felt that the promise of the United States had slipped their grasp amid decades of globalization and multiculturalism.
The unexpected win by the celebrity grabber of… er, kitty is already having repercussions:
Trump’s victory could produce significant repercussions, both economic and political. Stock markets had risen in recent days, believing that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would win. On Tuesday evening, as Trump reeled off a string of unexpected victories across the Midwest, futures market nosedived — likely anticipating global upheaval as Trump tries to follow through on aggressive campaign promises: to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, to impose tougher trading conditions on China, and to force U.S. manufacturers not to move operations overseas.
To the end, the real estate wheeler-dealer’s surrogates acted like obnoxious goons
[On CNN, Corey]Lewandowski [was] railing against Clinton for not conceding immediately while [former Obama campaign manager David] Axelrod says in so many words to him and to Trump: You won. Start acting like it. Don’t relive every slight and anger from the election.
Alison Hantschel of First Draft has some fighting words disguised as analysis:
I am not ashamed I voted against a man who thought you could electrocute gay people into being straight.
I am not ashamed I voted against a man who bragged about sexually assaulting women, victimizing women, killing women.
I am not ashamed I voted against men who claimed science was a myth and abortion was a joke and war was a really fun video game.
I am not ashamed I voted against a man who wants to deport people I work with, people I know, people I love.
I am not ashamed I voted for a woman who has worked every single day of her entire life for other people, who has fought for what she believes in and raised a family and stood up through decades of abuse and bullshit because of it. I am not ashamed of the Clinton sign in my window.
I am not ashamed to have voted for and cared about and invested in a party, instead of buying into the easy, cynical assumption that everything is broken and I alone see through it. I am not ashamed to have stood up for the values of equality, social justice, shared work and shared sacrifice, leadership, education and generosity.
I’m not going to temper a goddamn thing. I’m not going to apologize for a goddamn thing.
Read the whole thing. You’ll feel better!

No telling how our new president is going to keep his campaign promises. Maybe he’s the one saying F#*K what do I do now ?
granpa.usthai November 9th, 2016 at 03:03
like someone said.
his supporters are the ones who will wake up with a dead hooker handcuffed to them, not US.
I say F it, let the ones who’ve made this mess clean it up.

That will be our children and grandchildren.
fahvel November 9th, 2016 at 03:44
that’s the sad thing – old fuddy duddies here, with wisdom, experience and insight will not pay the price for the voters insanity

Well for those of us in the last decade or so to retirement have plenty to worry about. Social Security is as good as dead now. The deficit will grow back up to the percentages it was if not more and I suspect some serious foreign issues. I worry for our children..

May Donald wake up next to the ugliest prostitute ever to walk the street only to find himself eating his arm off in hopes she doesn’t wake up so he can make a quick get-away

I wonder if he punked them all.

The line is already forming

The office takes huge a toll on a person, Obama has aged big time his hair is white he is still a fairly young man, bush left with white hair. Trump will never be able to take the stress we will have pience, we are screwed.

To those who supported Clinton over Sanders, and those who voted for Stein or Johnson over Clinton – you’re to blame for this.
Both Democrats and Republicans made the wrong choice in terms of candidates (even Carson would have been better than Trump), and then your country as a whole made the wrong choice for the final winner.
Don’t be surprised when the economic walls start going up around you, as countries try to firewall themselves from the fallout of this decision.

pretty well said G.
Mike November 9th, 2016 at 07:13
Maybe, maybe not…
Trump won NC with enough votes to cover every Johnson vote going to Hill. If she got 50% of Johnson’s votes in FL she still would have lost, same goes for PA.
MI, NH, WI, turned out to be the real cracks in the wall.
Time to admit we seriously underestimated Trump’s support.
Glen November 9th, 2016 at 07:24
It’s not just about the actual votes. It’s about the attitude, too.
Plus, I forgot to include those who didn’t vote at all, too.
People treating Clinton as though she was unacceptable (or less acceptable than Johnson or Stein, who have major flaws of their own, most notably a lack of real, workable policy), and arguing for voting for Stein or Johnson, resulted in a much more toxic atmosphere for Clinton than there should have been.
Mike November 9th, 2016 at 07:30
I won’t argue your logic when it comes to voting Johnson/Stein or the belief the country chose badly. I’ll have to take solace knowing I’ve been wrong about everything so far in this cycle, maybe I’m wrong about Trump burning down the house.
Buckle up, buckaroo … it’s gonna be a hell of a ride.
fahvel November 9th, 2016 at 03:42
there’s no feeling better because Alison wrote good stuff. You people, all of you, fkt up royally and now the world at large is going to be the victim of the orange fkr without a soul. Thank you to all the uneducated unaware citizens of the once fine usa.

I was stressing out by the results about 10 pm so I laid down and fell asleep. I had the tv on and heard President Elect trump?!?!?!?!?!? Please tell me this is a damn nightmare.
Mike November 9th, 2016 at 06:47
It’s a nightmare … I’ve never been so wrong about something in my life. A bit humbling, actually.
Ed November 9th, 2016 at 07:34
Are you going to apologize to those that you told to “Practice saying Madam President….”?
Mike November 9th, 2016 at 07:36
Don’t be silly…all’s fair in love, war, and politics.
I have a feeling there will be another election ….

If you are not sure what we are in store for, watch the Dow Jones this morning.
Ed November 9th, 2016 at 07:46
Non sequitur.
anothertoothpick November 9th, 2016 at 08:30
That’s what they thought in ’29 just before unemployment hit 20%.
Non Sequitur they yelled!
Suzanne McFly November 9th, 2016 at 18:38
There are a million other ways I prefer to be humbled. Like standing naked on a well lit stage while a room full of males like trump scrutinize every imperfection on my body is better than what we are having to go through for the next 4 years.
Mike November 9th, 2016 at 18:44
You’ll be fine…never forget we went thru 8 years of Bush and we laugh about it.
Suzanne McFly November 9th, 2016 at 19:02
I know, that is all I can think of. I felt so betrayed by the country when they voted for him twice. The only good point in this “Presidency” is this time the actual leader (rump will not let pence do what cheney did) is a flaming moron and has no idea how to get anything done. He has created enemies on both sides of the isle and if he really wants to do anything, he will have to compromise. Maybe that will end his time in office.

Aww thanks. I am just hurt right now, I went to work (diverse middle school) and I was in pain after this election. I had a student cry in my arms because she believe her and her family will be deported. That is how I had to spend my Wednesday, supporting 11 year olds who felt America has just turned its back on them.
dogsRgoodpeople November 10th, 2016 at 09:50
omg……….. it’s heart-wrenching to think how many kids are going to sleep with that fear on their minds.
Suzanne McFly November 10th, 2016 at 19:53
There are millions across the country. I assured as many students as I could that there are checks and balances in our system and the President must have help from the Senate and Congress to accomplish his policies. It was a hard day, but today was better and tomorrow will be even better.
DogsRgoodpeople November 9th, 2016 at 10:03
Sorry Suzanne McFly, it looks as though we are living in that one of countless parallel universes where Donald Trump was elected president .

I am fighting off the dream of taking me and my animals and drifting off to some remote island far, far away.
