Evacuations ordered; US East Coast girds for Hurricane Matthew

Posted by | October 5, 2016 09:15 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Planet

Brace yourselves:

The eye of Hurricane Matthew has moved off the northeastern coast of Cuba and forecasters have expanded the hurricane warning area in Florida.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the Category 4 storm’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to 130 mph (215 kph) but it is expected to maintain strength through at least Thursday night. Matthew is moving north at 8 mph (13 kph).

Forecasters expect Matthew to move through the Bahamas on Thursday and be very near Florida’s east coast by that evening.

The center upgraded hurricane watches from Golden Beach to Sebastian Inlet and for Lake Okeechobee to hurricane warnings. The hurricane watch area has been extended north to the Flagler-Volusia county line.

Evacuations have been ordered:

[Gov. Rick] Scott advised Florida residents who live near the East Coast to leave before travel becomes difficult. He told reporters Tuesday that evacuation orders could be imminent. …

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who also declared a state of emergency, said the emergency workers would begin medical evacuations ahead of Hurricane Matthew on Tuesday and coastal evacuations on Wednesday afternoon. …

Authorities in Hyde County have issued a mandatory evacuation order for Ocracoke Island, a popular tourist destination, ahead of Hurricane Matthew. Visitors will evacuate starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday. Resident evacuations begin at 5 a.m. Thursday.
The University of North Carolina-Wilmington has also ordered students to evacuate no later than noon Thursday.

      I hope he’s ok.

      • Anomaly 100 October 5th, 2016 at 10:54

I don’t think it will hit his area until after it’s weakened. I just talked to his daughter and we were trying to figure out if it will hit Raleigh. Thanks!

That’s the thing about hurricanes. Trying to predict what track they’ll take is like trying to predict the NFL season. Too many variables.

          • Buford2k11 October 5th, 2016 at 11:22

I thought the NFL was fixed, just like WWE…or the debates, or like the election….It’s rigged, I tells ya, it is all rigged…sorry, I am still trying to shake off last night’s event…

            • Larry Schmitt October 5th, 2016 at 11:30

The NFL is only rigged if your team doesn’t win.

              • Bunya October 5th, 2016 at 13:43

That’s right. I live in Chicago but I loves me some Lions. Since the Lions lost to the Bears (it’s pretty bad when a team loses to the Bears and/or Cubs), so I have decided the NFL is rigged.

                • Larry Schmitt October 5th, 2016 at 14:01

In Cleveland the NFL is really rigged.

    • Hirightnow October 5th, 2016 at 12:06

      Best of luck to him

  2. Hirightnow October 5th, 2016 at 12:04

This is why I don’t trust hurricane forecasts…

    • Larry Schmitt October 5th, 2016 at 14:02

The forecasters themselves will admit they’re only guessing. But it gives the Weather Channel guys something to talk about. And they do gangbuster ratings during a major storm.

      • Mike October 5th, 2016 at 15:29

C’mon guys, give these people some credit. The models might not be perfect but they’re a far cry from looking at the horizon or asking uncle Louie what his trick knee thinks.
It’s still a pretty random event susceptible to a myriad of influences…the fact we know one is coming 5 or 6 days in advance is amazing in itself.

        • Larry Schmitt October 5th, 2016 at 16:51

I’m not criticizing, I’m saying how difficult it is to forecast hurricanes. Thanks to radar and the hurricane hunters, we have a lot more advance notice than we used to. Same goes for tornadoes.

    • eyelashviper October 5th, 2016 at 15:50

They really have become amazingly accurate over the past five or ten years. The problem arises when the steering currents are weak, so that storms can wobble around, gather strength, and even a slight shift can send them off the original track rather quickly. When Andrew was approaching Miami in 1992, it was a straight bee line for Miami Beach and downtown Miami, and at the last minute made a jog that sent it south, over the agricultural area and Homestead. Had it not made that jog, the damage would have been massive.

  3. crc3 October 5th, 2016 at 14:56

Here I am in Ft Lauderdale waiting for this cr*p. Been through many storms down here and it’s never fun. Andrew, Katrina, and Wilma just to name a few. This may be bad….

    • Mike October 5th, 2016 at 15:25

I’m up in West Palm, Francis and Gene hit us worse than Wilma or Katrina. If this baby tracks west just a bit it will slam right into us.
The 3pm update has it making land at Vero or north as a Cat 4…this fker is no joke.

      • crc3 October 5th, 2016 at 15:40

Yeah. We are going to get something but the only possible saving grace might be we aren’t on the “dirty side” of the storm. Miami may not get much more than a few squalls but the farther north you go it’s apt to be very bad. Good luck to you and yours…

        • eyelashviper October 5th, 2016 at 15:47

Be safe, it is going to be rough for most of us in Florida. Hope the track moves further east, but so far it has not.
The latest long range tracks show it moving east, then south east, and maybe looping back…
The joys of life in Floriduh….

      • eyelashviper October 5th, 2016 at 15:46

Be safe, this is a very bad one, could blow up to cat 4 again. It has been tough to track, and has changed paths often, but even far from the eye can be dangerous.
I am in north central Florida, and even TS winds and rain can be devastating here, due to huge trees. We were out of power and phones for days after Hermine..

        • Mike October 5th, 2016 at 16:04

Take care and batten down the hatches…!!!

        • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 18:07

I was thinking of your safety Eyelash, but thankfully you’re not in the East.

          • eyelashviper October 5th, 2016 at 18:13

Thanks, the whole state is under threat now…the storm keeps tracking west, which brings it all along the coast, and close to the coast in Ga and the Carolinas. It looks grim for millions, as it could even become a cat 4. Weather channel is calling it the most dangerous in 80 years, as it will be so big and cover so much territory.
We will not be under hurricane winds here, but 40 mph for 8 hours with heavy rain can cause major damage.
I’ve seen many close calls of really awful storms here, but this one looks like it is going to happen.
Everyone seems to be taking it seriously, and evacuations are in effect all over the east coast of FL, GA, SC, and NC.

            • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 18:17

I hope this thing turns to the ocean instead, or weakens… We’ll follow the news about it and root for you all.

      • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 18:05

You take care too Mike and keep us posted. :)

        • Mike October 5th, 2016 at 21:05

Damn thing keeps tracking west, it looks like this is going to be a major event for everyone from Broward to Jax and beyond.
The absolute worst case scenario seems to be happening…if the eye stays off the coast 20 miles or so it means the eyewall will pummel the coast all the way to GA …

          • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 21:17

I’m so sorry, was hoping it would stay out and away at the ocean…

    • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 18:05

Be safe crc3! We’ll be thinking of you. :)

      • crc3 October 5th, 2016 at 18:34

Thanks! The 5 PM advisory shows the core of the storm may miss Ft Lauderdale by 50 or more miles but we will still be in some bad squalls with 50+ mph winds…

        • Gina Bousquet October 5th, 2016 at 18:36

We’ll be sure to follow the news, please keep us posted.

  4. pinballsdoll October 5th, 2016 at 20:24

In Atlantic Beach FL…….we’re going about 15 miles inland and hoping for the best and getting stressed

    • Mike October 5th, 2016 at 20:57

West Palm here…be safe, it looks like Jax is gonna get a direct hit.

  5. bpollen October 6th, 2016 at 03:15

Here’s wishing the best for all affected. Be safe, guys.

  6. Mike October 6th, 2016 at 06:52

Latest model has this monster coming directly over my house (No Palm Beach Co) making landfall and heading north right up the most populated corridor in the state.
It looks really bad for millions of Floridians … this is gonna sting.
