Arnold Palmer died in a Pittsburgh hospital where he was undergoing heart tests.

The Latrobe native is regarded as one of the greatest players in professional golf history.

Palmer’s flair for the dramatic introduced the elitist world of golf to a blue collar audience. With a wagonload of trophies, he now receives an honor like no other.

He won the WPIAL and PIAA individual titles as a junior and senior at Latrobe High School in 1946-47. Palmer won seven majors, played The Masters for 50 straight years, co-founded the Golf Channel and was IMG’s first client.

He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2012.

    There’s the probably at least partly apocryphal story of what his wife would do to bring him luck. Johnnie Carson asks what she does for luck, and she replies “I kiss his balls.”

    Johnnie replied “I bet that makes his putter flutter…”

    Your name has been synonymous with golf as long as I’ve been aware that golf exists. We’ll miss ya, Arnold.

      Latrobe is about 15 miles from my town, you would not believe the many things this gentle gentleman has done for this area. Many that have never been made public. He really was a living legend. He will be missed.

        I’m not from the area, but have heard that he was a favorite son, and a kind and generous man. He WAS golf.

    One of the greatest and my favorite growing up. “Arnie’s Army” were his band of followers. Sad day coupled with the death of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. May they both RIP….
