Appeals court strikes down North Carolina voter ID law
Click here for reuse options!A federal appeals court on Friday struck down North Carolina’s requirement that voters show identification before casting ballots and reinstated an additional week of early voting, finding that legislators had acted with “discriminatory intent” in imposing strict election rules.
The decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit was an overwhelming victory for the Justice Department and civil rights groups that argued the measures were designed to dampen the growing political clout of African American voters, who participated in record numbers in elections in 2008 and 2012.
“We can only conclude that the North Carolina General Assembly enacted the challenged provisions of the law with discriminatory intent,” Judge Diana Gribbon Motz wrote for the panel.

This is good news.
Good thing there was a case that could be made in court and a judge who agreed. Unfortunately, a lot of people were denied their right to vote during the time it took to get this decision.
If the Democratic Party would get it together, they could stop this nonsense.
Imagine President Obama spending a week or two touring a state with these restrictive laws , speaking and appearing at voter registration events.
Imagine the Democratic Party setting up registration centers across the state, with Hollywood and music industry celebrities as well as professional athletes, all helping people get registered and speaking out against these stupid laws.
There would be Democratic Party officials there helping voters get through whatever hoops have been set up. They’d have all the forms there to fill out and photographers providing free pictures.
Those who get registered would then get into concerts or autograph signings or other events.
I’m picturing these things taking place all across the state like a travelling circus.
One thing that comes to mind is a stat I believe I saw during the 2012 election campaign. It may have been 2008. Anyway, the stat was that in the state of Mississippi there are more African Americans eligible to vote than whites, yet most registered voters in the state were white.
Look, if the Democratic Party put on an extended campaign with leading celebrities, entertainers and politicians swamping the state and getting large numbers of people registered, not only would they elect enough people at the state level to get rid of these stupid laws, but the Republicans in other states would see this and be reluctant to try this again.
But with the limp response we’ve seen to date, we can be assured that in North Carolina and elsewhere, they’ll try again.

This time around it is so important that red state ANTI-voting laws
go down in flames…as with the republican party itself.
