Sarah Silverman’s move defuses convention tension

Posted by | July 26, 2016 10:00 | Filed under: Top Stories

Edgy comedienne Sarah Silverman got laughs (as expected) and applause (no suprpise) – and her move to defuse tension over the Democratic National Committee wikileak seems to have helped:

As a Bernie supporter, Sarah Silverman said she “felt the Bern” and had a powerful message about the inspiration Sanders brought to her and millions of others, And how inspiring it was to see how much that message influenced the Democratic party.

It was democracy in action.

And then she pivoted and said, “how proud” she was to vote for Hillary Clinton. She made it clear that for the Bernie movement to continue, Hillary Clinton must be elected as the next president.

She preached party unity and also after had a few words to the Bernie or Bust people after she was chanting “Unity”

“For the Bernie, can I just say, for Bernie or Bust people, “you’re being ridiculous!”

The crowd went wild and Al Franken said, “Listen to that, listen to what you did. This is a comedian.”

MSNBC’s Republican analyst Nicolle Wallace said quickly afterwards that it was the greatest political speech she ever heard from a celebrity in her life.

“For the Bernie, can I just say, for Bernie or Bust people, ‘you’re being ridiculous!’ ”

The idea that some people want to stick to their beliefs (in Bernie) rather than vote for Hillary is NOT ridiculous.

Silverman’s statement is the ridiculous one.

      Oh, do get over it,Howard.

      • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 10:40

Get over the fact that we have politicians who have no problem telling people to skip their beliefs in preference to putting on their party uniform ?

I would question whether they have any real beliefs/principles

You are a funny little drama queen.
Are you auditioning for the Onion?

          • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 10:53

Ahh, another insult from Old Lefty. Rather than comment on the issue at hand.

Shows his intelligence in choosing his political beliefs maybe.

              another insult from Old Lefty.

              1) Isn’t that ALL you ever contribute?

              2) There IS no issue at hand.

              3) And it’s “she” not “he”.
See how wrong you are when you assume without facts?

              • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 11:22

                  How did I silence you?
Unless you are silenced by uncomfortable facts.

That’s why I call you a drama queen.

          Sweet Jesus you’ve got issues.

          • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 11:17

Yes, ones I believe in ! By your statement, you seem to be implying that you don’t; and that having them is meaningless.

            • fahvel July 27th, 2016 at 02:36

              yours are like hemorrhoids.

Trolly McTrollerson should be ignored. It’s just a flame thrower with nothing better to do.

        • William July 26th, 2016 at 12:44

Your indignation is duly noted, and duly laughed at.

        • Richard Banville July 27th, 2016 at 01:46

So by your reckoning, all of the Republicans who follow Trumpism have abandoned their principles.

They should have continued to fight for sane conservative ideas rather than give in to that fascist monster.

          • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 27th, 2016 at 08:57

Not all, but certainly many that I believe in.

    • oldfart July 26th, 2016 at 11:31

Why do you have such a problem with people exercising their 1st ammendment rights ? It’s not like she’s telling them they cant vote for whomever they wish. It’s a Democratic convention process for Hillary not Bernie. Her opinion is as valid as anyones…and you know what they say about opinions.

      • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 15:48

The mere fact people have a 1st amendment right doesn’t mean their statements or writings can’t be criticized.

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”

I obviously disapprove of what she said

    • jybarz July 26th, 2016 at 11:34

I totally agree with you, believe me, but I love Sarah Silverman.

      • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 26th, 2016 at 15:44

You may actually be the first one here to agree with me. Could be dangerous for your life :D

  2. mistlesuede July 26th, 2016 at 11:36

I believe she played the moment perfectly. And she didn’t go off of the message she was giving throughout the entire time spent on stage. Applause.
