Sanders Effect: Democrats put $15 minimum wage in platform draft

Posted by | June 25, 2016 10:37 | Filed under: Good News Politics

The Democratic platform drafting committee is drafting its positions with Bernie Sanders in mind.

The committee, which will continue drafting the party’s guiding document Saturday, also aligned itself with Sanders’s support for progressive ideas such as abolishing the death penalty and expanding Social Security, the Associated Press reported. The minimum wage language adopted echoes a common refrain by Sanders, who has called the current federal minimum of $7.25 a “starvation wage.”The platform also tackles financial reform, calling for “an updated and modernized version of Glass-Steagall.”

Excellent! Two years of free college is in POTUS Obama’s Feb proposed FY17 beginning 10/1/16: -Providing Tuition-Free Community College for Responsible Students. The Budget funds America’s College Promise (ACP), which would create a new partnership with States to make two years of community college free for responsible students, letting students earn the first half of a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree and acquire skills needed in the workforce at no cost. America’s College Promise would also provide grants to four-year HBCUs and MSIs to provide first-time low-income students, including community college transfers, with up to two years of college at zero or significantly reduced tuition. https://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget

Sanders’ proposal for free tuition on colleges and universities (not just community colleges 2y) plus low interest student loan and financial assistance to low income students for room, board, books and living expenses is unparalleled.

There’s Trump, but there’s also Bernie. The US must be congratulated on such a brave progressive as candidate!
