Hawaii first state to put gun owners in database
Hawaii gun owners will now be entered into an FBI database.
Click here for reuse options!Gov. David Ige said in a statement that the legislation is about community safety and responsible gun ownership. He said it will help law enforcement agencies protect Hawaii residents and visitors.
State Sen. Will Espero, who introduced the bill, and the Honolulu Police Department said the measure could serve as a model for other states. However, critics believe gun owners shouldn’t have to be entered in a database to practice a constitutional right.
Most people entered in the program, known as the “Rap Back” database, are in “positions of trust,” such as school teachers and bus drivers Stephen Fischer of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division said in May. Hawaii is the first to add gun owners.
Supporters say the law would make Hawaii a leader in safe gun laws. Allison Anderman, a staff attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said the bill was “groundbreaking,” and that she hadn’t heard of other states introducing similar measures.

Mensa Member June 24th, 2016 at 22:43
I doubt that Obama takes credit for what Hawaii does.

given it’s his birth place, i’m sure he is proud. i didn’t say anything about credit now did i?

“database” sounds so sinister.
If you drive a car, you are in a database. It just means you filled out a form.
License. Register. Insure. Secure.
Those four simple things would save thousands of lives.

why does it sound “sinister?”
bpollen June 25th, 2016 at 02:44
Only if you are unfamiliar with business uses of computers for the last 50 years is “database” sinister (which is the Latin word for your left hand.)

Correct. When you buy a new product and fill out the warranty registration…you are in a database. Not very spooky.

I know that some 2nd amendment zealots will protest. But the fact is that damn near everything we do is recorded in a database.
Make a phone call and it is recorded in a database so you can be billed at the end of the month.
Busy some groceries using your ATM card. The amount you spent and what you bought ends up in several databases.
Order a pay per view movie and you are in a database.
Take out a mortgage to buy a house. Take out a loan to buy a card. You are in a database.
Voter id advocates insist that you not only be in a database, but prove you are in the right database in order to vote.
The list is endless. NRA hysterics need to sit down and STFU.

very nicely said. thank you.

thanks. my dirty little secret is that I am a frustrated writer. I may give it a try for real when I retire from my day job in a few years. but, one story idea I have is about some nefarious conspiracy made possible by the fact that everything we do is recorded. so I have done a fair amount of thinking about that subject.
my other idea is about time travelers who go back in time to kill Adolph Hitler’s mother before she conceives him. they succeed and return to a present time that is nightmarishly worse than the suffering inflicted by WW2. I am still working out the details of what that nightmare consists of. but such is the creative process. start with a big idea, and fill in the details as you go.
anyway, I am rambling and it is late on Friday. time to relax with ESPN and Sportscenter.

here’s an historical hint:
what would have refrained Joseph Stalin from taking over the world had the Soviets had access to the atomic bomb first?
-and what kind of a world would it have been had ‘KOBA’ ruled supreme with only small resistance forces operating out of US?

10,000 SALUTES to you, arc, and hopefully this will alert the State of Hawaii to the mentally deranged with guns!

oogles of ditty dots on the atm database. Even my bank calls me from time to time wanting to know if I need counseling for excessive weird stuff.

All computers should be registered and their owners need to be put in a database.

where do you think you ALREADY are?
online and you’re already in a database (note the sponsor’s ads that appear on your screen)
do you ever read the ‘agreements’ clauses?

Really? On a daily basis, how many die due to computers? Comprehension is not your strong suit, get off the computer and walk away slowly.

Your IP address without which you cannot exchange data over the internet is in a database. Your email address is in a database. If you use a Microsoft Windows computer, the serial # of your copy of the operating system along with the serial# of the CPU in your laptop or computer are in a database at Microsoft. I have never built Apple machines, but I suspect Apple has a similar setup to prevent privacy of their OS. Your attempt at sarcasm is already a fact of life.

They are…you just don’t know anything about how computers interact with each other, so you come here and spew idiocy a 5th grade science student knows is untrue…
eyelashviper June 25th, 2016 at 12:17
LOL, you are, and sad that you do not comprehend such a basic fact…
Drive a car, use a credit card, buy something, log onto a website, etc.etc.etc…
Mike June 25th, 2016 at 17:55
How true…log into your email from any device…it will never forget you and will keep a record forever (unless you do a complete wipe) Google, cell towers, satellites, etc., never forget where they once say you log on…be it a website, your disqus account, email, bank. IM….there is no getting away from the man…!
Reel_Me_In June 25th, 2016 at 10:06
This is funny. I never thought of Hawaii as a bastion of gun crime.
Mike June 25th, 2016 at 11:43
It’s not simply because they have the strictest gun laws in the country…kind of a no brainer…
