Cop Who Shot Unarmed Man In Back Convicted Of Murder

Finally…A cop story with a happy ending.

Ashby faces eight to 24 years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 23. He is the first Colorado police officer to be convicted of an on-duty shooting in 20 years. Prosecutors called the jury verdict “justice.”

Israel should be deeply disturbed by the Brexit vote

The common wisdom, following Britain’s referendum result announced on Friday, holds that the narrow vote in favor of leaving the European Union – so-called Brexit – is evidence of a troubling return across much of Europe to nationalism and isolationism. That wisdom is wrong, or at least far too simplistic

    A New Intervention in Libya

Somethingvery unusual happened last spring at the White House: the president of the United States admitted that America’s 2011 incursion into Libya, which led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, had been a mistake.

As a boomer who enjoyed their music for decades, the recent losses of Ralph Stanley, Prince and others leaves me thinking of this loss of genius and the musical geniuses we still have.

Bob Dylan comes to mind. I have Modern Times on as I write. Stevie Wonder and George Clinton come to mind as being in the genius category, rather than merely being great. I’d throw in the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Paul Simon and Kenny Chesney into the genius category.
It seems to me we should think of whether we really appreciate the musical geniuses among us. I wish I’d seen Prince. I’ve seen Dylan a dozen times or so and it’s not enough. Aretha. I have never seen Aretha or Stevie Wonder.
Really, wouldn’t it be a good idea to make a point of seeing some of these living legends before they go, even if they aren’t sending singles to the top of the Billboard charts anymore?

In the meantime, how about we turn off the TV for a few hours and dig out some classics. Hmmm. I got Dylan on now, I think I’ll follow that with Exile on Main Street and then Secret Life of Plants

When I think of all the incredible musicians that we have lost, some long ago, it is so sad. This guy is a genius, more well known in the jazz field, but worked with many artists, including Joni Mitchell.

      Jaco Pastorius..

He was in Weather Report, wasn’t he? I liked them for a spell.

There have been many greats, and also those who I think of as geniuses who are no longer with us. I’m still kicking myself for not seeing Miles Davis once when I had the chance.
My post was more about the ones still alive in the context of the sense of loss we have with recent deaths of Ralph Stanley and Prince.
I think we should appreciate them more and make a point of seeing them before they too, are gone.

In the genius category, we still have:
        The Rolling Stones
        Bob Dylan
        Iggy Pop
        Stevie Wonder
        Aretha Franklin
        Kenny Chesney
        Paul Simon
        – and man, it’s really bugging me that I can’t recall the name of a fiddle player still with us who is amazing when he gets going – I got him pictured in mind but caaaaan’t quite pull the name…

        • eyelashviper June 27th, 2016 at 22:09

He was in Weather Report, had his own group and collaborated with all the jazz greats. Miles Davis wrote a piece of music for him, and when he first went to New York, he dazzled all the jazz players, including Herbie Hancock. Sadly, he was beset with bipolar disorder, and slowly declined, and ended badly at age 37.
Musical genius is such a special and precious gift..

We are not friends, per se, but bumped into each other by circumstances with common experience. In that vein, I would like to give the courtesy of a quick good bye. Mysterious disappearances of posters is always annoying, so I won’t be one of them. I am leaving this week for an extended visit with my youngest daughter in Israel, she has been living and working in Tel Aviv for a year now. I am lucky enough for a month long holiday scheduled with her. I have much to do before take off day. I wish a great summer to you and everyone else here. Shalom :-)

Norwich, NY Police Officer: ‘I Crossed The Thin Blue Line and Now I’m Paying For It.’

This is clearly your typical story of what happens to possible “good cops.” They simply do not last in this profession and you should remember that the next time you think you’re talking to a ‘good one’ because you’re not.

    Clinton to Palestine: Drop dead

Have you had an espresso yet today? Have you had a drink? Make that a double! Brace yourself for the news over the weekend from the Democratic Platform Committee. The platform this year will be even worse than previous platforms on Palestine. That’s how things look, despite the insurgent anti-Benjamin-Netanyahu campaign of Bernie Sanders: there is no occupation, and no settlements either. Jerusalem forever, and death to BDS.

    Partisan Media Is Worthless

At first glance, partisan media can look like issue advocacy. The cadences and structure is the same, the passion may even be real, but the substance of the work is actually a perversion of advocacy and activism, as it looks to channel anger at injustice and hope for a better world into the cynical operations of party political strategies.

    Europeans Contest US Anti-Russian Hype

A significant crack has been unexpectedly opened in the wall of Europe’s disciplined obedience to the United States. I’m not only referring to the possible long-term consequences for U.S.-European relations in the wake of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, but the unlikely blow against Washington’s information war on Moscow delivered by Germany’s foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who a week ago
shockingly accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization of “war-mongering” against Russia.

Yesterday the US Supreme Court ruled in the majority against Texas laws which were designed to make it difficult for women to execute their constitutional right to seek an abortion. The court ruled 5 to 3 against onerous regulations placed on the books making it more difficult for women to obtain a legal abortion. Justice Kennedy sided with Liberals on the court to solidify rights gained in its historic Roe vs. Wade abortion rights ruling of the 70’s. This new ruling should serve notice on other states attempting to limit abortion rights. I applaud this ruling and hope that with a Hillary Clinton victory in November, we will see the court transformed from a Conservative Court of Neanderthals to a Liberal Court of forward looking people. I believe the Constitution should not be intrepreted as a non-breathing document. We, the people, of this great nation are a living breathing people, who are adapting to changes unforeseen by our founding fathers – the authors of the US Constitution. Therefore, we must adopt new ways of looking at the world based on new knowledge and a better understanding of humanity. The problem with some mainstream religions is their inability to adapt to the new world. They are stuck looking at the world through the eyes of fallible men who lived thousands of years ago, the men who wrote the bible. Men are the creators of all religions. The US Constitution is a secular document which must evolve for this world to progress.

In order to attract general election voters, those skeptical of a Donald Trump presidency, the Donald has decided to modify his position on a ban of all Moslems entering the country. He now says it would be okay by him for Moslems from so-called “safe countries”, who are properly vetted, to enter the country. I wonder what long time supporters of Trump would say about this? So he said one thing (during the campaign) to become the Republican nominee, but now he’s saying something completely different. Hmm. Is Trump talking out of both sides of his mouth again? I wonder? Is he still going to build that wall along the Mexican border? Or has he changed his mind about that to? Will Trumps supporters wake up the day after Trump is inaugurated President to learn that the Donald has changed his mind again? Who is this clown who wants to be President? Is he a man of conviction or is he merely just fucking you over?

    • 17 June 28th, 2016 at 12:01

I wonder what “safe countries” those would be? Surely the United States can’t be on that list.

Video Emerges of Hillary Clinton Praising Trade Deal as ‘Gold Standard’ in 2012

One of the key issues early in the Democratic presidential primary was the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and with the emergence of trade as a major issue among supporters of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, it’s rearing its head again. While presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton came out against the trade pact
in October of last year, Clinton’s opponents have long pointed to
remarks she made as secretary of state in order to cast her opposition
as a convenient political reversal. Video of one such remark has
emerged, and promises to resurrect that criticism.
