Ygelesias: Sanders the future of the Democratic Party

Posted by | April 20, 2016 11:00 | Filed under: Opinion Politics

This may not be his year, but his message is where the Democratic Party is headed, writes Matthew Yglesias.

Even in defeat in New York and most likely in the overall quest for the 2016 Democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders has already won in another, perhaps more important way: His brand of politics is the future of the Democratic Party.

Sanders is the overwhelming choice of young voters, scoring 67 percent of voters under 30 in New York even while losing overall amidst a set of election rules that were highly unfavorable to his cause. National Reuters polls now show him with a large 56-38 edge over Clinton with voters below the age of 40.

The votes of old people count just as much, of course, but any young and ambitious Democrat looking at the demographics of the party and the demographics of Sanders supporters has to conclude that his brand of politics is extremely promising for the future.

Huh?… Bernie Sanders is damn near 80 years old and he’s the future?

Not Sanders himself. His politics. His politics are the future of the Democratic party.

It’s time for the Democratic party to again become a liberal party instead of a slightly kinder and gentler version of the GOP it became in the 90’s.

It’s not just the Democratic Party in America. Across the world, a shift is occurring, I think. It’s a reaction to the previous rise of right-wing politics in the wake of September 11th and the further push by right-wing politics after the GFC, in my opinion.

In the UK, it’s Jeremy Corbyn. The Vatican saw the rise of Pope Francis. SYRIZA in Greece is another example. Politics is shifting to the left. It’s also being exhibited by a widespread reaction against “the establishment”, which has been shifting to the right, worldwide. Trump’s rise is actually being caused by the same underlying current. He just happens to be mobilising the nutjobs instead of the regular people.

And these shifts are being seen primarily due to the influence of young people.

I completely agree with you. Young people are tired of tying to live in this world of greed and wars that the current world leaders created. They want opportunities and a peaceful way of life. What just blows my mind is people think it can be achieved under our current system. Young people want change and old people are afraid of change. Progressive my ass!

Yet again Yglesias misses the boat with his pathetic attempt to define the Democratic party. With a BA in philosophy, this 34 year old tries unsuccessfully to put “idealism” as the core focus. The Democratic party is far more pragmatic in its approach to finding solutions. There is no magic cure from grabbing onto “idealism” that will have any lasting effect toward actually enacting laws to achieve those solutions.

He conveniently ignores the reality of that little thing called the United States Congress. There will never be a House with 100% Democrats and there will never be a Senate with 100% Democrats. – To proclaim that achieving some mythological so-called “brand” of a left party will change everything is not only unrealistic, it is idiotic.

Sanders is failing because his “idealism” does not have any substance. Quite simply, there is NOT a majority of Democratic citizens in this nation who want to follow his dreams of a pretentious political revolution. Contrary to the so-called conclusion of Yglesias, the future of the Democratic party will NOT be based just upon the numbers of any single demographic. – True blue Democrats will always be inclusive for all citizens when actually resolving the political quagmires of the 21st century.
