Tennessee Senate vote to make Bible official state book

Posted by | April 5, 2016 10:53 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Religion

Do they have any idea what the Constitution says? No, they don’t.

The state Senate voted 19-8 in favor of the bill despite arguments by the state attorney general that the measure conflicts with a provision in the Tennessee Constitution stating that “no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.”

Opponents argued the Bible would be trivialized by being placed alongside other state symbols such as the official tree, flower, rock or amphibian. But both chambers of the Legislature brushed aside those concerns to send the bill to the desk of Republican Gov. Bill Haslam. He opposes the measure but hasn’t said whether he’ll issue a veto.

Republican Sen. Steve Southerland argued that his bill is aimed at recognizing the Bible for its historical and cultural contributions to the state, rather than as government endorsement of religion.

Which bible? There are many translations. Knowing Tennessee, I’m sure it will be the KJV, because as we all know, Jesus said “thou” and “sayeth.”

Oh what the hell, as long as they are trampling on their own constitution,
why not pass another law to actually make their citizenry read it too ?
    Assuming they can read.

What’s the Christian equivalent to Sharia Law? Is there a name? If not, we need to create one…

    B.S. period.

If these people would concern themselves with actually living a Christian life, meaning as Christ would have, instead of useless proclamations, and worrying about what other people are doing in their bedrooms, and cheating their constituents while professing to be Christians, we’d all be a whole lot better off. The state of Tennessee is not improved one iota by this phony show. And that’s supposed to be their job, making the state of Tennessee better. It’s as simple as that.

Yes but, it’s Tennessee. They’re trying to become the new Alabama.

Did you do anything fun last weekend?

Thou shalt not bear false witness, senator. We know you’re lying, you know you’re lying, and God knows you’re lying.
