it’s down right disgusting. the family should sue the school district and the principle for false imprisonment.

If they succeed, I’ll be looking for an attorney.
I set the record in my school for getting the most detention slips in a year…

Kids.
The principal should have called the other kids in, too and given them the teaching they need.
The whole thing should have turned into a teachable moment, and hopefully will be. While we have freedom of speech, there are limits. Within legal limits there are further social limits on what is acceptable.
We have all needed to have these lessons taught to us.
I recall back when I was in the 8th grade we all needed to be taught, and it took some time before some of us got it.
I don’t think there were any Muslims in my 8th grade class, but there sure was hurtful rumor-mongering going on.
At the same time, we should be very careful about what speech we would ban.
Most often the solution to bad speech is good speech, not censorship.
