Chamber of Commerce: Trump would be ‘impeached’ for his China tariffs

Posted by | March 19, 2016 08:50 | Filed under: Economy News Behaving Badly Politics

The head of the Chamber of Commerce says Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs would be a disaster for the average consumer.

Donald Trump’s proposed 45% tariff on Chinese exports to the United States would be such a blow to U.S. consumers and businesses that “they’d probably impeach [him] when they figured out what that really meant,” the CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Friday morning.

Speaking with Bloomberg TV’s David Westin and calling it an overstatement to make a point, the Chamber’s Tom Donohue said it was “the citizens that go to Wal-Mart and Target, and go to their stores, and people that buy components” who would pay for the policy.

WHAT WAS THE END-RESULT OF THE SMOOT-HAWLEY TARIFF ACT?

    FREE TRADE

As other countries placed tariffs on American exports in retaliation, these tariffs actually led to the reduction of American exports and thus jobs:

U.S. imports from Europe declined from a 1929 high of $1334 million to just $390 million in 1932, while U.S. exports to Europe fell from $2341 million in 1929 to $784 million in 1932. Overall, world trade declined by 66% between 1929 and 1934. [US Dept of State]

Here’s another moron who believes the president can somehow unilaterally impose tariffs on our trading partners. I don’t suppose congress would have some say in this?

    • Foundryman March 19th, 2016 at 11:05

Trump thinks he can do anything he wants.

      • Larry Schmitt March 19th, 2016 at 11:11

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Listen to any of his rantings, and he evidently thinks the president is combination emperor and wizard. He can, with a wave of his hand, make anything happen or make anything he doesn’t like disappear. And his idiot supporters eat it all up. And what’s worse, no journalist challenges him on it.

Unilaterally imposing tariffs is only ONE thing emperor Trump would be impeached for. The guy is a madman and the Republicans deserve him.

Right idea, just the wrong amount of tariff.
Currently, The U.S. has a 2.5% tariff on Chinese goods, China has a 25% tariff on U.S. goods. Hardly fare. If we just doubled out tariff on their stuff, we’d be at 5%, still a lot lower than theirs. Results would be 1) Our balance of trade would improve noticeably. 2) The federal government would see an increase in revenue. 3) We would be showing the Chinese we are serious about their currency manipulation.
The down side, if there is one, would be a very slight increase in prices for Chinese products. Remember that tariffs are imposed FOB. That’s before retail markup, before distributor add on, and before warehouse fees and commissions.

I would like to see China destroyed in trade or whatever for its greed, fraud, disrespect, stealing and bullying of South China Sea surrounding countries’ territories.

China is a blatant liar and a thief of anything you can name: territories, intellectual properties, technology, etc.

WW3 will start in SCS between China v. US, Japan, SE Asian countries, etc.

China is desperate to get up to 90% of SCS because of its rich natural resources (fishing) and oil & gas beneath the surface.

Claims that it owns almost all of SCS since ancient times based on its nine dash line. But Taiwan foolishly drew eleven dash line first on its map in 1947 from which China copied its nine dash line years later in the 1950s.

China has territorial disputes with all its neighbors. The lying, bullying greedy bastard of Asia.

Funny how republicans do not even know what impeachment is or how it works, but then again they are not known as the stupid party for nothing.

It’s hard to imagine the Chamber of Commerce not getting exactly what they want, since they have been for the last fifty years. This country has been the puppet of the Chamber of Commerce for all of these years without a candidate to challenge them…..until now.
