Site issues and your opinions, please
I’m thinking about how we do our post pages. Do you like the embeds from other sites or would you prefer a short recap with applicable videos or other media and a link to the sources? My goal is to make the user experience as enjoyable as possible while enabling us to put up content quickly. We don’t have the staff or resources to do original content, but want this to be a great aggregation site in much the way Drudge is, but obviously for a liberal/progressive, but broad audience. Any comments you have about how to improve the user experience are appreciated, as always.

I love it when Cracked gets all politicky.
Larry Schmitt March 10th, 2016 at 12:14
That’s actually very clever. When Cracked was just a print mag, I remember it being a very cheap knockoff of Mad. I would never seek it out, only read it occasionally when I found it lying around. But this was quite good. Thanks.

np. They claimlittle to no relation to the old print magazine, and in between the inevitable “listicles”, there’s occasionally some decent articles about serious stuff.
Larry Schmitt March 10th, 2016 at 15:10
That makes sense, since all the people who worked on the original are probably dead. What was it, 50 years ago, or more?
Hirightnow March 10th, 2016 at 15:23
Yep.
tracey marie March 10th, 2016 at 11:21
Leave it alone, it is great!
oldfart March 10th, 2016 at 11:39
As a user and speaking only for myself, you’ve achieved your goal but you’re never going to make everybody happy. Give yourself and your staff a pat on the back and take the rest of the day off.

Don’t sweat the small stuff…this place is great…it loads fast and has great commenters and then there is Alan and staff who really are on top of things…so…don’t fix it if it ain’t broke…
Larry Schmitt March 10th, 2016 at 12:15
And a big attaboy (or girl) to the mods, who actually kill spam and boot people who insist on being a$$holes. Unlike virtually every other site that uses Disqus.
Hirightnow March 10th, 2016 at 15:45
Deleting spam over morning coffee is one of my few pleasures in life.
(I just wish they’d come up with a different picture…the last dozen all used that same photo of a blonde.)
Larry Schmitt March 10th, 2016 at 16:25
If they had any originality they’d have a real job.
Alan March 10th, 2016 at 17:31
And we are grateful that Hirightnow has spam with his coffee.
Hirightnow March 10th, 2016 at 18:35
I use it for dippin’…

Would much prefer links to embeds – with the embeds you end up with very weird behavior with all the ads/popups on the sites you embed (mostly a problem on mobile devices). I ended up using an ad-blocking app on my mobile devices, which eliminates most of the problem, but I like supporting your site so it is not a perfect solution.
You could perhaps put up some kind of optional donation/subscription thing for those of us who want to support your work, but who for whatever reason prefer to block advertising. (The ‘infolinks’ pop up that sits on top of your site drives me particularly nuts, whether mobile or web based). I used to subscribe to your podcast back when I lived in Brazil, I’d gladly pay 5 bucks a month for an ad-free experience (which I’m sure is WAY more revenue than the ads provide you for a single user).
I currently disable ad-blocking on my desktop, to provide what minimal support that offers – but as stated, for user experience purposes – I do ad-block the mobile.
Hirightnow March 10th, 2016 at 17:14
Under your ad-blocker’s OPTIONS or PREFERENCES panel, go to the “whitelist” and add alan.com.
Um Cara March 11th, 2016 at 14:42
Yep, that’s what I do on my desktop – but to make the mobile site usable for me I enable ad-blocking on those devices.
Hirightnow March 11th, 2016 at 15:29
Ah. I misunderstood.(AndI HATEHATEHATE that Infolinks widget!)
Alan March 10th, 2016 at 17:30
Thanks for your input. I’ll explore whether it’s possible to create an ad-free site for those who want to pay a monthly fee. Not sure it that is do-able. I’d like to hear from other users if you think the embeds are a problem.
robert March 14th, 2016 at 00:00
hey come on Your net worth is 12 million and your suggesting i have to pay ?
Alan March 14th, 2016 at 09:26
You believe everything you read on the Internet? And even if that were true, I still have the right to run a business.
tracey marie March 14th, 2016 at 09:31
Good for you Alan.
robert March 14th, 2016 at 12:27
I thought this was a message board With pop up ads.
tracey marie March 14th, 2016 at 09:32
He suggested no such thing, he replied to um cara.
mistlesuede March 10th, 2016 at 17:56
I did notice yesterday and today we had both embedded articles and also ones with highlights and links. I have always preferred the latter from previously, but I’ve gotten used to the embeds. I do have some problems once in a while with them. I think I mentioned that once before when you asked.

March 11 7:30am..
Serious glitch on opening page.
Alan March 11th, 2016 at 08:49
What is the glitch?
oldfart March 11th, 2016 at 09:23
I’m not a computer techie but it looks like the Syria and Ruth Bader stories are bleeding through the topics pictures on home page.
oldfart March 11th, 2016 at 09:52
By Jove, I think you’ve got it.
Alan March 11th, 2016 at 10:08
Yes, I know what the issue is and it’s fixed. Thank you.
StoneyCurtisll March 11th, 2016 at 11:45
Looks good now..
Thanks Alan !
Gina Bousquet March 12th, 2016 at 00:10
The embeds are a wonderful solution. You managed to improve the site without losing cozyness and sense of community. Thank you!
