GOP debate ‘descends into total chaos’

The February 13 GOP debate was easily the angriest and ugliest yet.

The ever-entertaining Donald Trump…

was booed several times at Saturday night’s Republican debate.

The audience in South Carolina did not respond kindly to the front-runner’s attacks on Jeb Bush and the Bush family, with the crowd responding with several rounds of boos during the night.

“This is a man who insults his way to the nomination,” Bush said.

Trump attempted to blame the reaction on “lobbyists pulling for Bush, but the audience cut him off. “Jeb is so wrong. Jeb is absolutely self— just so you understand, you know what that is? That’s Jeb’s special interest and lobbyist talking.”

The booing was so noticeable that searches of “why are people booing?” spiked 1400% during the debate, according to Google.

But Trump seems to feed off the kind of reaction he received. And his supporters will also blame the establishment GOP.

Perhaps the biggest low-light came during the latter portion of the event, which prompted Think Progress to post an article quite accurately titled “Republican Debate Descends Into Total Chaos”:

During the second hour of the GOP debate in South Carolina on Saturday, the conversation went beyond anything ever seen in a Republican debate.

After the six men hurled insults back and forth, the debate took a steep dive into chaos around when [Ted] Cruz hit Trump for previously supporting liberal policies.

“The next president is going appoint one, two, three, four Supreme Court Justices,” Cruz said. “If Donald Trump is president, he will appoint liberals. If Donald Trump is president… your Second Amendment will go away. You know how I know that?”

CBS moderator John Dickerson cut him off.

“Hold on gentlemen. I’m going to turn this car around,” Dickerson said.
When Trump continued talking and questioning Cruz’s conservative credentials, Dickerson again attempted to control the stage.

“All right, gentlemen… We’re in danger of driving this into the dirt.

      Thanks for sharing that Anomaly.

It is one thing for us partisans on this site to declare the GOP certifiably insane. But for that opinion to be shared by someone whose livelihood depends on making Republicans at least appear sane, all I can say is, I love the smell of insanity in the GOP primary air.

      It smells like victory.

What an embarrassment for the GOP tonight. What a bunch of amateurs.

    • dave-dr-gonzo February 13th, 2016 at 23:54

When Ben Carson comes off as the sane one (okay, one of two, because Kasich also stayed on a pretty even keel), you can’t help but smile.

      • mistlesuede February 14th, 2016 at 00:03

        Love me some Colbert!

      • Anomaly 100 February 14th, 2016 at 09:01

Kasich now appears to be a moderate. Ben Carson looked sane. Yes, it was a crazy night.

  13. allison1050 February 14th, 2016 at 08:24

It was the most entertaining of their debates on the one hand but on the other, it was more like watching and listening to a roomful of Unsupervised preschoolers and I’m including the oh so proud to be ignorant audience.

  14. bpollen February 14th, 2016 at 23:42

I think of it less as a descent, and more of a group tantrum walking half-a-step to chaos.
