Tyson: How Can There Be A Benevolent God?
Neil deGrasse Tyson questions how there can be a benevolent God given what takes place in the universe.
“If God is benevolent, I look at the universe and see asteroids rendering life extinct, there’s an absence of benevolence in the actual universe that I see,” he told TechInsider. “That’s always been a point of contention between philosophers and theologians.”
The astrophysicist, who first made a similar argument last month on the Nightly Show, also pointed out that, as online records show, there is a long list of deities that have been worshipped through the ages.
He also said that, while one can be certain within their own self as to the existence of a God, that even the deeply religious have some doubt.
“That’s why [it’s] called faith,” deGrasse Tyson argued. “If you were certain there was a God, you wouldn’t have to call it faith. It’d be some other activity.”

That is the question that I believe would stump the Pope and I am a believer but I completely understand the reasoning behind this type of inquiry.

It’s been a big question for quite a while. Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, etc have all attempted to climb the epistemological ladder in search of this one. Alas, so far it’s still an open question. As NGT says, that’s why they call it “Faith”.

that’s why I love being an agnostic….I don’t have to worry about it….I can just shrug my shoulders and leave out belief, faith, doubt…..agnosticism, atheism not for sissies….when life sucks there is no one to blame and no delusion to find comfort in….the abyss is not a warm place to snuggle…I turn to the sages and philosophers….Albert Einstein is rumored to have said that he” found God in the “rapture” of the universe..”…..;)

Someone used that “things happen for a reason” line on me one time, and I almost choked on my tongue as I stopped myself from asking him why the World Trade Center was knocked down. Things don’t happen because it’s god’s will, they just happen.
