Treasury Says Economy Better Now Than When Obama Took Office
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew confirms that the economy is much better now than when President Obama took office.
Seven years ago, the unemployment rate and deficits were higher, but “where we are now, we’re seeing steady growth, we’ve seen enormous job creation over this period of time, we’re seeing the unemployment rate around 5 percent, and we’re seeing that growth in spite of the fact that there’s a lot of headwinds from a slower global economy,” he told Fox Business Network.
Lew said the U.S. still has challenges, such as income inequality and deficits. But he said the country is in a good position to tackle its domestic and international challenges. One issue the Treasury secretary said he would like to work on business tax reforma

Notice most of the recovery has occurred under a Republican led House and now a Republican led Senate. So it is just as easy to say that the Republican policies have turned the economy around despite the obstructions of the Obama presidency.
F_cons December 28th, 2015 at 13:27
It’s just as easy to say the sun comes out at night and sets before daytime but it would be equally idiotic
arc99 December 28th, 2015 at 13:41
It is easy to say anything at all. You can say the sun rises in the south, the earth is about 800 years old and the moon landing was faked.
But for those of us with brains, we insist on having underlying facts to back up assertions.
In this example, the logical question would be precisely what policies passed by Congress and signed into law by the President fit your scenario?
The fact is that after the signing of every major economic bill, the right wing base of the party has been ranting about RINO’s destroying our country.
Then here you come with the nonsensical argument that all the legislation passed over the past 8 years in the face of nonstop opposition from right wingers, should now be credited to those same right wingers, who if they had their way, none of the laws would have made it out of Congress.
Perhaps the regulars over at Breitbart and redstate are stupid enough to believe such nonsense. Here, not so much…
Jack E Raynbeau December 28th, 2015 at 13:42
Which republican policies? Fifty attempted repeals of Obamacare?
arc99 December 28th, 2015 at 13:49
oh and the Affordable Care Act was not a Republican policy. In the years to come, we all realize that right wingers will take credit for its success.
But simply stated, Jimmy’s argument is beyond ludicrous. The GOP fought tooth and nail to block everything the President did, and now he wants that same GOP to get credit.

All you have to look at is the chart posted. Democrats took control of the House in 2006 and shortly thereafter the economy went into the tank. Job losses under a Democratic congress were huge. Since the Republicans retook the house in 2010, there has only been positive job growth. Now the Democrats were in control under both Bush and Obama and lost jobs under both presidencies. The republicans were in control for part of Bush’s and Obama’s terms and have seen job growth under both presidencies. According to the data, Dems took control with 137,039,000 jobs in November 2006. They lost control with 132,605,000 jobs in November 2010 for a loss of 4,434,000 jobs.
Now if you look at the Republican control of the House from 1994 to 2006 you get the following job data – started at 115,887,000 and ended with 137,039,000. So that was a job growth of 21,152,000 under a Republican led House with both Democratic (Clinton) and Republican (Bush) Presidencies.
All figures were taken from here – https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/PAYEMS
Now if you want to try and say what policies Clinton, Bush, and Obama pursued that led to such gains with Republicans but losses with Democrats then I would be happy to listen as to what those presidents did to make the economy better. But please explain why they could only do it with a Republican House majority.
F_cons December 28th, 2015 at 16:46

Jimmy Fleck December 28th, 2015 at 16:49

tracey marie December 28th, 2015 at 16:59
Last chance….which policies did they propose…remember, NO and make the President fail are not policies
Jimmy Fleck December 28th, 2015 at 17:05
Well i could show you the hundreds of bills passed by Congress under the Republican control, but you would not say that any of those are the reason the economy is doing better. I would ask, what specifically has Obama done that made the economy better? Why did it happen faster and better with the Republicans in control of the House? What did Clinton and Bush do that was so right while the Republicans were in control of the House? What did Bush and Obama do that was so wrong when Democrats were in control of the House? So far the only thing cited was job growth. So to counter act that claim I showed job growth for the last three cycles of Republican to Democrat to Republican control of the House. It seems based on that data, job growth is best under a Republican House regardless of which party is President.
arc99 December 28th, 2015 at 19:56
Your series of posts reminds me of the University of North Carolina and their athletic program, especially their basketball teams.
Those fans have a saying
‘If God is not a Tar Heel Fan, then how come the sky is Carolina Blue”?
You cite statistical anecdotes and provide not a single example of a Republican initiative signed into law that improved the economy.
What has President Obama done that made the economy better?
How about the stimulus package?
How about saving the largest employer in the country (GM) and the thousands of jobs at related supplier companies which would have disappeared had GM gone under?
How about the ACA?
You see unlike knee-jerk Obama-haters, those of us who support the President do not have to rely on illogical non sequiteurs citing not a single legislative initiative. We have facts.
It does not matter whether your numbers come from the Fed or from the almighty herself. The question is what legislative proposals signed into law and championed ONLY by the GOP have produced our robust economy. You have provided no response at all. Not at all surprising given the tendency of Obama-haters to rely on emotion rather than logic.
Cite a bill# from the House or Senate, or at least an initiative passed into law such as the ACA. Absent those specifics, your posts are the consummate nonsense.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/sep/07/barack-obama/barack-obama-said-hes-cut-taxes-middle-class-famil/
Our ruling
Obama has raised some taxes during his presidency, but he’s also pursued broad-based tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses. We particularly give weight here to the tax cuts that were part of the stimulus and the payroll tax holiday, which reduced taxes for broad swaths of the workforce. Some small businesses may have been hit by new taxes that were part of Obama’s health law, but these would depend on the particular circumstances of each business. Also, there were new taxes on cigarettes and indoor tanning.
Obama said he has “cut taxes for those who need it – middle-class families, small businesses.” He has, but he also has raised some taxes. So while his statement is accurate, it lacks that additional context. We rate his claim Mostly True.
arc99 December 28th, 2015 at 20:02
btw, it is really pathetic how you Obama haters stick to the same script.
when good things happen, the President should never get the credit.
when bad things happen, the President always gets the blame.
and when all else fails, and you really cannot criticize the result in any way, shape or form, accuse him of taking “too much credit” as in the bin Laden mission.
must really suck for you Obama-haters. such hatred for a twice-elected President doing a remarkable job
tracey marie December 28th, 2015 at 23:53

Dwendt44 December 28th, 2015 at 17:55
It’s your backasswards and cockamamie interpretation that has everyone laughing at your stupidity.
Democrats were only in control of the Senate for two months.
Jimmy Fleck December 28th, 2015 at 18:12
Democrats controlled the House from November of 2006 to November of 2010. That is the time frame I referenced when they lost 4 million plus jobs. The Republicans were in control of the House while jobs grew by 21 million and 12 million. Again, these are just the facts from the same chart claiming Obama is responsible for the job growth. Seems like Republican House members have better evidence to show that they are responsible for job growth under three presidents – two of which were Democrats.
Dwendt44 December 28th, 2015 at 18:28
That was during the Bush (a republican) recession/depression.
The lag time before the Obama efforts took affect is what you totally and conveniently ignore. The Senate needed 60 voted for any movement on a bill and Democrats only had 60 for two months.
Jimmy Fleck December 28th, 2015 at 18:36
Somehow the “Bush” recession only kicked in after the Democrats took control of the House in 2006. They then oversaw the loss of more than 4 million jobs before the House reverted to Republican control and we have had 12 million plus jobs added since then. Before the Dems took control of the House, the Republican controlled house oversaw the creation of 21 million jobs while Clinton and Bush were president. It doesn’t seem to matter which party controls the White House as much as which party controls the House in terms of jobs created over the last 20+ years.
Obewon December 28th, 2015 at 20:02
Here’s speaker Ryan’s on the job training to become your new Boehner!

What Jimmy is really telling us; I’m angry and it feels good. Plus I have bunches of TV peoples encouraging me and giving guidance so that I can stream-line my anger into hate and direct it towards our POS president. What Republican policies?
They couldn’t pass the simplest bill and their whole tactic was to obstruct Obama as much as possible.
Myron Allen December 29th, 2015 at 01:25
Hell! The GOP did everything they could to block or undo anything Obama tried! They didn’t care about the American people, they wanted Obama to fail! They wouldn’t & didn’t pass any bills to help the economy! Remember those famous words by Mitch McConnell: TOP PRIORITY, make Obama a One Term President! They didn’t care if making Obama fail meant the Country could fail too, they didn’t care, they’d just blame any failure on Obama!
bpollen December 29th, 2015 at 06:49
When did the Republican congress accomplish anything other than repeated attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act?
Jake Spooz December 29th, 2015 at 08:01
When did Obama accomplish anything?
Mike December 29th, 2015 at 13:20
Normally, that would have some elements of truth in it…however, we both know this is the congress of NO and they have done everything possible to thwart the president at every turn…so no, Obama owns this completely.
Myron Allen December 29th, 2015 at 01:14
You mean people are working, companies are hiring, & folks have more money to spend? Car & home sales are up dramatically? Companies are making record profits? Folks haven’t spent as much on Christmas since 2007? Folks are actually SAVING more for retirement? The GOP don’t want to hear this! No republican / conservative will believe this!
