Pope: Atheists Welcome In Heaven

Posted by | December 26, 2015 16:52 | Filed under: Religion

Pope Francis has good news for non-believers in that there is a path to forgiveness.

Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences.

Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.

“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

    Thanks, but no thanks…

    • Larry Schmitt December 26th, 2015 at 17:09

But at least that’s a better response than the church has offered in the past, namely that all non-believers were automatically going to hell. When I grew up Catholic, that included Protestants.

      • TiredOldGuy December 26th, 2015 at 18:04

I had a nun in the 6th grade who told me that my entire family was going to hell because my divorced mother had the temerity to remarry outside the church. Looking back, that was probably the start of my souring on religion.

    • Guy Lauten December 26th, 2015 at 17:15

my sentiments exactly. i spent most of my life not going to one of their churches, why the hell would I start when I’m dead?

  2. Budda December 26th, 2015 at 17:23

Well, in that case why does anyone bother going to church…any church

  3. mea_mark December 26th, 2015 at 17:25

    What is heaven?

As far as I can tell heaven is a mental construct created by humans to explain something unexplainable. When there is something more substantial than that, then I might be interested. Until then, it’s a bunch of nothing about nothing.

  4. anothertoothpick December 26th, 2015 at 18:18

Yeah but, what about the virgins?

    • bpollen December 28th, 2015 at 05:25

If all the women in heaven are virgins, it AIN’T paradise…

So Atheists can go to a place that doesn’t exist if they ask forgiveness from a god that doesn’t exist? I’m sure the Atheists are thrilled! This pronouncement along with the popes recent pronouncements on global warming & capitalism has me convinced the pope is in the throws of senile dementia

    • Larry Schmitt December 26th, 2015 at 18:51

I was thinking along the same lines myself. This is like offering free ham to a vegan. Or a Jew.

    • Glen December 26th, 2015 at 23:02

He didn’t refer to asking forgiveness now. He was saying that, if you live by your conscience now, and on death you find yourself confronted by god, just ask forgiveness then, and it’ll be fine.

      • Red Eye Robot December 27th, 2015 at 03:51

“just ask forgiveness then, and it’ll be fine.”

Do you even read what you write?

        • Glen December 27th, 2015 at 14:32

Do you even think before you post?

What I said made sense both grammatically and semantically, and in the context of the pope’s beliefs it also makes sense when one assumes existence of god.

For you see, it’s possible for rational people to simultaneously hold inconsistent ideas in their heads, for the purpose of consideration, such as “god doesn’t exist” and “god does exist”. I take the former position, but that doesn’t preclude me from understanding conclusions that follow from the latter.

        • bpollen December 28th, 2015 at 05:24

Why should she? Because YOU don’t understand it? I wouldn’t expect the capacity for understanding in your carcass any more than I expect my dog to perform Titus Andronicus.

    • Dwendt44 December 27th, 2015 at 00:03

Since you seem to be from another dimension, maybe it’s you suffering from senile dementia.

    • William December 27th, 2015 at 12:21

Poor, poor troll. So the Pope who actually has a masters in chemistry and 97 percent of the scientific community is wrong, because Rush Limbaugh a dropout crack head says so. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/41de9ade1907bd299886c10c42ee5ee15caddad898c7b8ddc64fd38f40cc7a0d.jpg

The last thing this atheist would want is an eternity of kissing the a$$ of a petulant, narcissistict, abusive entity. The point is the Pope seems to think that most atheists are more moral than many Christians.
Of course the Pope is right on both capitlaism and global climate change, it is only the willfully ignorant, like you, that don’t accept that.

    • robert December 28th, 2015 at 01:58

im reading something different and have no problem with its content. Besides i want to know why there were 3 bibles down here that represent one god ?

the answer is bound to be hilarious !!

    • bpollen December 28th, 2015 at 05:21

We all know that your “conviction” is as facile and false as your concern for atheists, religion, morality, ethics… Kinda like the person hired to keen at a wedding.

  6. veggiedude December 26th, 2015 at 18:41

If everyone obeyed their conscience, we would all be vegan.

    • Larry Schmitt December 26th, 2015 at 18:52

      But bacon is so tasty.

      • veggiedude December 26th, 2015 at 18:58

“less than two slices of bacon – increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%” – World Health Organization, but hey, everyone has to die one day right?

        • Larry Schmitt December 26th, 2015 at 19:06

Won’t stop anyone from eating bacon.

            http://www.wired.com/2015/10/who-does-bacon-cause-cancer-sort-of-but-not-really/
eating two slices of bacon a day increases your relative risk for colorectal cancer by 18 percent. Given the frequency of colorectal cancer, that means your risk of getting colorectal cancer over your life goes from about 5 percent to 6 percent and, well, YBMMV. (Your bacon mileage may vary.) “If this is the level of risk you’re running your life on, then you don’t really have much to worry about,” says Alfred Neugut, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at Columbia.

            THE CANCER NUMBERS ARE COOKED.

          • veggiedude December 27th, 2015 at 00:45

No problem. They have a Seaweed that tastes just like bacon when fried.

            • William December 27th, 2015 at 13:11

I appreciate and respect your position. I stopped eating meat, not for any other reason than one day I thought about the process, and my disgust over ruled my love for gravy and pot roast. It’s been nearly a year and so far so good. I don’t crave it, and the longer I am meat free the less I want it. Looking at the feed-animal food process, meat is a terrible waste of an acre of corn.

Here was the hard part. I’m a gym rat and protein intake, or the myth therein was an issue. Back in the day we believed 2 grams per pound of bodyweight, which we now know is crazy. I was surprised to find that the best overall powerlifter/bodybuilder I know has been vegan for his entire adult life. We now have high protein pastas, and legumes are a pretty good source.

Initially my weight strength dropped, then it recovered and I’m actually better than when I ate meat. When you eat meat you don’t watch your intake as much as you should. When you stop eating meat you are more cognizant of your protein intake, and you eat more, and better quality proteins. A cup of cooked chopped broccoli provides 5.7 grams of protein

Some very well meaning people vegetarians were quick to offer suggestions of hotdogs, burgers, bacon and such that looked and tasted like meat. I think eating something that is trying to imitate something you shouldn’t eat is a little nuts.

              • veggiedude December 27th, 2015 at 13:22

GQ did a search for the best burger in the world. The number one burger was a shock – it’s all vegan. Once you realize you don’t need meat, giving it up isn’t so hard. Maybe the old 70’s tv show had an impact on me. I’ve been in martial arts since ’80, and the show stressed meat free living. I wish they would do a remake. It could recruit the next generation of vegans!

                • William December 27th, 2015 at 13:26

I never really looked at it as giving up anything. I still do a little dairy. Essentially I eat things that didn’t need to be killed.

        • Glen December 26th, 2015 at 23:01

An increase of 18% in the chance of developing colorectal cancer represents an increase from a 1 in 20 chance to a 1 in 17 chance. And developing colorectal cancer doesn’t mean death – it has a survival rate of 92% for first stage, and unless it develops into the final (fourth) stage of it, it’s still better than 50%.

And please don’t claim to know everybody’s consciences. It’s incredibly self-righteous and sanctimonious.

          • veggiedude December 27th, 2015 at 00:55

I’m not being self-righteous and sanctimonious – I’m extrapolating. Going by the PETA ‘meet your meat’ campaign where practically 9 out of 10 people from the street were appalled when confronted with slaughterhouse practices. If most people acted in accordance to this, then the price of meat would go through the roof, making the rest of meat eaters consider going meatless out of economic considerations. It all may be a moot point, as governments may make the decision for us by 2050… http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/the-lookout/vegetarian-2050-190426669.html

Atheists are welcome In Heaven, but not in Christian America

  8. FatRat December 26th, 2015 at 19:21

I’m covered on both cases. No afterlife, no problem. Afterlife, I have a friend who supposedly is on the other side, if afterlife then he’ll sneak me under the fence. lol

I couldn’t imagine wearing white and listening to harp music for eternity. Try sitting thru it for two hours and see what happens.

Pope Francis has good news for non-believers in that there is a path to forgiveness.

Forgiven for what? Oh that’s right, a couple of people couldn’t follow simple instructions and now we’re all f*cked.
Also, going to God to ask for forgiveness is contrary to the very definition of atheism.

    • Mike Watkins December 26th, 2015 at 20:40

Ummm I believe the Pope is saying after death there is a path to forgiveness.

      • Glen December 26th, 2015 at 22:55

Yes, I’m pretty sure that by “if you go to him”, he’s referring to death, not faith.

  10. DogsRgoodpeople December 26th, 2015 at 21:11

I guess I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t just a little bit glad to hear him say this.
