Thanks To Whom? Fewer Americans Favor Organized Religion

Posted by | November 24, 2015 15:25 | Filed under: Religion

Organized religion is on the downswing in America.

Religious participation is declining among Americans even though religion is still very popular. According to the latest Religious Landscape Study by the Pew Research Forum, the percentage of Americans who believe in God, attend religious services and pray daily has declined significantly during the last eight years, especially among adolescents. The drop in religious participation is larger among whites, and less among blacks. One group bucking the trend is political conservatives, who show no decline.

It seems that organized religion is the front line for the teabaggers and the new legion of hate

I wish there was a building that instead of church on Sunday mornings, you meet there with other people in your community. No religious speech, no requirements on who would be allowed to attend. That would bring a lot of positive attributes. You can’t hate someone if you allow yourself to know and understand them.

After the French revolution Notre Dame de Paris was renamed ‘Temple to the Goddess Reason’ for a number of years (1793) which I think was a positive move (needs a little more research, I know) . Ultimately returned to the Catholic church but the concept was correct. I have to admit I find the great cathedrals of Europe (Chartres, Durham,Salisbury, and all the other astounding medieval constructions) are the most spiritual and wonderful monuments ever created by the ingenuity and creativity of people. You can’t help but sit down and marvel at the design and calm beauty of the places, in spite of their superstitious and backwards origins

In my most trying times I go to church but I go when it is empty. It is the most peaceful place on earth to me.

Hey, we have one of those in Kansas City. It’s an off-shoot of the KC Free thought organization. The Sunday morning meeting is only part of it. It’s kind of a big deal.

That is a great idea, and if no money is involved it is an incredible idea.

I’ve been a few times, there is no request for donations at these gathering but it is funded by donations made to a handful of local atheist organizations – they solicit for donations of course, like all charities.
The focus appears to be on young parents finding (non-religious) social events for the family and younger adult mixer events. There does seem to be a lack of attention to post 50 singles.

I completely understand asking for donations, gotta keep the lights on. I am glad you have this available in your town, I hope the idea spreads.

I’ve always said that organized religion breeds intolerance. When people terrorize and kill in the name of their sky fairy, there’s something terribly wrong with society.

It’s long been established that the more educated you are, the less religious. The higher your intelligence, the less religious. Makes sense, and one reason why the rabid right wants to undermine education.

I must be pretty frickin’ intelligent, then!
