The Associated Press called the election just hours after polls closed at 8:00 p.m. EST, with Edwards maintaining a solid lead over Republican rival, U.S. Sen. David Vitter. Edwards, a pro-gun, anti-abortion Democrat, will…

He may be a Democrat but he sounds like a Republican-light.

    Just a southern blue dog.
This is not any kind of victory for celebration.

For everyone whining about him being “Republican lite,” remember it IS Louisiana, and his opponent WAS diaper bag Vitter. We can’t be spoiled and expect Elizabeth Warren progressives to win EVERY state/district. Edwards was NOT expected to win, and yet he did, so it is very much a victory, especially after the destruction Piyush wrought on Louisiana. Not to mention, Edwards IS amenable to being persuaded to support gun control, abortion rights, and other Democratic agenda items, as compared to a Governor-elect Vitter. Take victories wherever you can get them is the moral of the lesson.

You’re right. In Louisiana, he would have to be pro-gun to even be on the ballot. When they call it the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” the sports they’re talking about aren’t basketball or football.

Not a great victory by any means.

But I’ll take whatever I can get.

It should be a great victory, considering Edwards was an underdog, and the eight years of Piyush Jindal destroying the state.

I agree with your post above, but I would like to see liberals avoid smearing Jindal by the snarky use of his Indian birth name. It smacks of nativism, and is as tiresome as the right-wing racists who call the President names like Barry Hussein Soeataro.

          • bpollen November 22nd, 2015 at 18:12

I use his Indian name because he has tried so hard to distance himself from his heritage. Plus, it is his GIVEN name. “Bobby” is a nickname and is not on his birth certificate. I also use Rafael Cruz and Randal Paul. It IS their name, and I don’t think use of their given name is nativism in any respect. Accurate use of another’s name is snarky? I don’t think that way when someone uses my given name. My mom used to do it when I was in trouble, and I never felt the urge to call her a nativist. Nor do I think John Ellis Bush thought Barbara was snarky if she didn’t call him JEB!

Suit yourself. As you say, Jindal himself doesn’t respect his heritage, going so far as to have his portrait painted with Caucasian skin tone. What I don’t like is the implied sense of “his name is Piyush, he ain’t no real ‘MurriKKKin.”

I don’t think you are hearing those kinda racist sentiments out of liberals.
