Oregon Shooting Sheriff Wants ‘Opportunity to Heal’ Before He Goes Back To Enabling Gun Violence
On Thursday morning, our nation suffered the latest in a never-ending series of mass shooting tragedies when 26 year-old Chris Harper Mercer opened fire at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg, Oregon, killing 10 and injuring 7. As is usually the case with these (now routine) stories, details of the shootings themselves are much more sparse than those about the killer, who left an extensive online footprint.
President Obama took to the podium of the Brady Briefing Room one more time Thursday night, and delivered yet another frustrated statement on a mass shooting. This one had an even angrier edge than usual:
And, of course, what’s also routine is that somebody, somewhere will comment and say, Obama politicized this issue. Well, this is something we should politicize. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic. I would ask news organizations — because I won’t put these facts forward — have news organizations tally up the number of Americans who’ve been killed through terrorist attacks over the last decade and the number of Americans who’ve been killed by gun violence, and post those side-by-side on your news reports. This won’t be information coming from me; it will be coming from you. We spend over a trillion dollars, and pass countless laws, and devote entire agencies to preventing terrorist attacks on our soil, and rightfully so. And yet, we have a Congress that explicitly blocks us from even collecting data on how we could potentially reduce gun deaths. How can that be?
We also have sheriffs and others who, like gun-nut Kim Davises, refuse to enforce federal gun laws that they, themselves, see as violating the 2nd amendment. Among them is Sheriff John Hanlin, whose office is handling the investigation. Hanlin was interviewed by CNN’s Chris Cuomo Friday morning, and tried his best not to engage in any discussion of gun policy because he wanted to “give the community an opportunity to heal,” but a dogged Cuomo finally got him to admit…READ MORE

Hanlin had no idea that his stupidity and lack of leadership as a law enforcement officer would become widely known. At the time he was shooting off his mouth about resisting any new laws and/or executive orders aimed at curbing gun violence, he was posturing for his local constituency, but now that people have died on a college campus in his jurisdiction, he not so vocal about his pro-gun views. Weaselly coward. He had the perfect opportunity on CNN this morning to share how much he loves guns and how he plans to disobey gun laws, but he didn’t take it. He wimped out and kept talking about how he’s “focused” on investigating these acts of terrorism. He even removed the Sandy Hook truther mess off his Facebook wall, which tells me that he’s probably feeling like a fool right about now for taking the position that SH was a “staged” event. I hope he has many sleepless nights and is haunted by seeing the faces of those who died at UCC yesterday under his watch.

wait a sec. he was a SH truther? no crap? so, why should this be any different? how would he feel if those same truthers started up a rant that this wasn’t real either? he is a true coward.

it’s amazing that this fk’n idiot is still not willing to concede that he was wrong then and still is wrong today because, what? he just spat on the graves of the victims and spat in the faces of the victims families. his racism is so strong and imbeded, that he would rather see another mass murder, even in his own city and state, than to do the right thing. that’s some seriously messed up thinking.

completely agree…you know that shooting happened on a thursday..and there was a gun show (first of 3 planned) for that saturday…which they continued with I think..and apparently the gun shop owner who sold weapons to Mercer…really made a mint after the massacre from customers who stampeded to his door….disgusting,….
