Boehner To Quit Congress At End Of October
UPDATE, 11:00amEDT – “Screw you! I QUIT!!!”
Speaker John A. Boehner, under intense pressure from conservatives in his party, will resign one of the most powerful positions in government and give up his House seat at the end of October, throwing Congress into chaos as it tries to avert a government shutdown.
Mr. Boehner, who was first elected to Congress in 1990, made the announcement in an emotional meeting with his fellow Republicans on Friday morning.
The Ohio representative struggled from almost the moment he took the speaker’s gavel in 2011 to manage the challenges of divided government and to hold together his fractious and increasingly conservative Republican members.
Most recently, Mr. Boehner, 65, was trying to craft a solution to keep the government open through the rest of the year, but was under pressure from a growing base of conservatives who told him that they would not vote for a bill that did not defund Planned Parenthood. Several of those members were on a path to remove Mr. Boehner as speaker, though their ability to do so was far from certain.
It will be up to the majority of the members of the House now to choose a new leader, and the leading candidate is Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the majority leader, who is widely viewed more favorably by the more conservative members. The preferred candidate among many Republicans, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has said he does not want the job.
“John Boehner has been a great leader of the Republican Party and the House of Representatives,” Mr. Ryan said Friday in a prepared statement. “This was an act of pure selflessness. John’s decades of service have helped move our country forward, and I deeply value his friendship. We will miss John, and I am confident our conference will elect leaders who are capable of meeting the challenges our nation faces. I wish John and his family well as he begins the next phase of his life.”
Anyone want to bet he’s beating a hasty exit because Shadow Speaker and Peter Venkman lookalike Ted Cruz is going to shut down the government?
The original story, which went live just before 10amEST, only mentioned his pending resignation as Speaker of the House. The Grey Lady reports:
Speaker John A. Boehner will resign from Congress and give up his House seat at the end of October, according to aides in his office.
Mr. Boehner was under extreme pressure from the right wing of his conference over whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood in a bill to keep the government open.

For those of you who think that the resignation of the “Weeper of the House” is a victory. You might want to think again. Boner did have a little of the old style Republican left in him. His problem was fear, greed, and alcohol!
Kevin McCarthy’s only claim to fame is to rename a Post Office to the “Buck Owens P.O.” and he renamed another building. He’s a new comer to Congress and things are going to go from bad to worse. As far as I’m concerned Boner the crying Cheeto was the only thing that kept the House from completely self destructing. Of course he would have to turn to the Democrats to do it. You think ANY other Republican is going to do that!!??
The House is going to either turn into a religious cult or the lunatics are going to completely run the Asylum! Either way it’s goin to be very ugly!

I completely Agree. We are entering a Very Sad time in the U,S. I believe Boehner’s alcohol problem was caused by Depression and that may be the reason he has had to give up the fight.
