Rubio Picks Worst Possible Venue For Yom Kippur Fundraiser

Posted by | September 23, 2015 10:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

It probably wasn’t such a good idea to plan a fundraiser to occur on  Jewish high holy day at a home displaying Nazi memorabilia:

Democrats denounced Republican presidential hopeful Marco Rubio Tuesday over his campaign’s plans to hold a fundraiser at the spacious estate of a Texas real estate tycoon who collects Nazi artifacts. The fundraiser happened to be scheduled during Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and the holiest day on the faith’s calendar.

Rubio, the junior, first-term U.S. senator from Florida, was holding the event in conservative philanthropist Harlan Crow’s home library, which features two paintings by Adolf Hitler, a signed copy of the dictator’s “Mein Kampf,” and a cabinet full of dinnerware and linens used by the Fuhrer, according to the Dallas Morning News. Tickets for the fundraising event ranged from $1,000 per person to $10,800.

Naturally, the reaction has not been positive:

The head of the National Jewish Democratic Council is blasting Sen. Marco Rubio for having a fundraiser on Yom Kippur and at Harlan Crow’s mansion, which contains two artworks by Hitler. You can read that below.

But here’s a statement just released by Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, in which she calls the decision to hold the fundraiser at Crow’s estate “the height of insensitivity and indifference.” It reads, in full:

In this Republican field, the sad truth is often stranger than the wildest fiction.

Today, as the sun is setting for Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement and the most holy day on the Jewish calendar – Senator Marco Rubio will hold a fundraiser in a home that features two paintings by Adolf Hitler, a signed copy of Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf, and a cabinet full of place settings and linens used by the Nazi leader.

You really can’t make this stuff up.

“An event at a home with items like these is appalling at any time of the year. Adding insult to injury, Rubio is holding this event on the eve of the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. Holding an event in a house featuring the artwork and signed autobiography of a man who dedicated his life to extinguishing the Jewish people is the height of insensitivity and indifference. There’s really no excuse for such a gross act of disrespect. Mr. Rubio, who by the way, represents a sizable Jewish population in our home state of Florida, should cancel this tasteless fundraiser. It is astounding that the presence of these items that represent horror for millions of Jews the world over, would not stop Mr. Rubio or anyone on his team in their tracks when planning this event.”

– DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz

I don’t even know where to begin with this? I just don’t. Who the f*ck collects Hitler memorabilia? Dished the whack job/prolific mass murderer ate off of? Or the fact that someone that is running for President would know someone like that? Or the fact that they would hold a fundraiser, on Yom Kippur of all days, at an antisemite’s house while asking people for money? Are they inviting the Republican Jews? Is Bibi invited? Just curious?

Would love to be a fly on that wall.

Shame on you. The collector is not an anti-Semite, as Jewish commentators have noted. He is a historical collector who collects items from many evil and good historical figures — including figures he considers extremely evil, like Hitler. The insinuation in this blog post that it is anti-Semitic to collect such memorabilia was made fun of and mocked by the prominent Jewish law professor Eugene Volokh in the Washington Post. My wife, who is Jewish, also finds this insinuation ridiculous.

Professor Volokh’s commentary is here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/09/23/oh-no-rich-collector-of-historical-items-has-items-by-and-about-bad-people/

I hate to say it but a LOT of people collect Nazi shit.

      • Mainah September 23rd, 2015 at 16:03

but I doubt they’d have a republican fundraiser while said collection was extensive during Yom Kippur while having Israel ‘s PM speak to Congress. Just seems beyond tacky.

Your comment is the most incisive in this column. There is no evidence that Mr. Crow is a nazi sympathizer but one wonders why someone would spend hundred of thousands of dollars to collect such things? It does not prove anything but it does raise at the least suspicion.

    • Sindi Linette September 23rd, 2015 at 16:22

Only reason to collect nazi stuff is to destroy it.

        • Sindi Linette September 24th, 2015 at 15:54

Yes only for museums, but citizens need not collect such things.

          • Mainah September 24th, 2015 at 16:32

People can collect what they want. I just think it’s in poor taste. Some people keep stuff from prolific serial killers, I still wouldn’t understand the want for such a thing. His dishes? Then to have a very public fundraiser during a very holy day from the group who had the PM of Israel over.

I just wouldn’t destroy the artifacts because of the history.

    • Robert Smithson September 23rd, 2015 at 20:54

      • whatthe46 September 23rd, 2015 at 21:19

it isn’t glorified now is it? there’s a difference. it’s fk’n disgusting to think you can hold fundraiser and immature and stupid in a private home with nazi memorabilia and not get called out. and someone wants to trust this idiot running the country. i thnk not.

        • Robert Smithson September 23rd, 2015 at 22:40

He’s got two pictures of Hitler displayed in a room with many other pictures of leaders of that era, so how is that glorifying him?

Let’s see, a few days ago it was the destruction of Ben Carson on tap for the Democrats and now it’s Marco Rubio. Wait, let me guess, next on the list will Carly Fiorina. Got to clear the diverse Republican field for the old white liberal Democrats at any cost. You know, it’s really not looking good for you folks this time around.

          • Robert Kennedy September 24th, 2015 at 20:33

The old whites are the Republican base, not the intelligent people. And since there isn’t a single Republican in the race worth the powder t blow them to Hell, why shouldn’t anyone who cares for the country want to destroy their chances? Backing any of them proves you are demented.

          • ShelleysLeg September 24th, 2015 at 21:15

  9. ExPFCWintergreen September 23rd, 2015 at 18:21

This is such a bullshit non-story. It really does nothing but validate the otherwise vapid whinging of nutjobs like Ben Carson that the left is “PC.” There’s a lot to dislike about Harlan Crow and his politics; the fact that he has amassed a huge collection of historically significant documents, books, and ephemera is not one of them. Sure, it’s fun to say, “Oh, that guy’s a Nazi because he has National Socialist ephemera” — oh, those darned Republicans! But it’s just as reasonable to say, “Oh, that guy’s a British Tory sympathizer” because he’s got Winston Churchill ephemera, including paintings by Churchill, or to say “Oh, that guy’s a Confederate sympathizer” because he’s got original documents signed by Robert E. Lee,” or to say, “Oh, that guy’s an Italian navigator sympathizer” because he’s got original documents belonging to Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus. There’s no evidence Crow’s a Nazi re-enactor or that he celebrates National Socialism in any way, and there’s all the evidence in the world that he is an especially avid — and, by virtue of being ultra-wealthy, especially aggressive — collector of historical artifacts. As for his signed edition of “Mein Kampf,” as an historian and a collector of politically influential books, I can say without hesitation that if I had the financial wherewithal I wouldn’t think twice about acquiring a signed copy of perhaps the most important political screed of the 20th-century. If this is the best the DNC can do under Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, either or both of DWS and the DNC need to go away; the whole press release was concocted simply because some dimwit 20-something staffer Googled “Harlan Crow” and came across a several-years-old Dallas Morning News story about his collection and deluded themselves — and the DNC — into thinking they’d done some super-duper oppo research.

    • Chris September 23rd, 2015 at 19:09

“Optics.” Look it up. People DO care about this stuff.

Let me appeal to your sense of empathy. Say a politician running for president plans to have a fundraiser at a Brit’s home which has quite a collection of 18th century artifacts from King George’s estate decrying the pathetic colonists in America. And they have the fundraiser scheduled for the 4th of July.

NOW do you understand how braindead this would be? No? If not, wow.

    • bpollen September 23rd, 2015 at 19:26

You see a signed edition of Mein Kampf as a rare collectible.
A lot of people would see it as Hitler’s Bible.
Would it be significant if he collected torture paraphernalia?
How about serial killer memorabilia like Gacy’s paintings?
Or collects photos of female circumcisions?

A certain mind set may be able to divorce those items from their larger context and see them as simply objects of monetary and maybe historical value. Not everybody can, or even wants to, make that distinction.

      • The Original Just Me September 23rd, 2015 at 22:59

That book (?) Is there to continually remember us of people like you. That is what should be said about ExPFC Wintergreen.

        • bpollen September 23rd, 2015 at 23:20

I don’t get that from his posts. I seldom disagree much with his positions. From the perspective of a historian and collector, I can see his point. I just don’t agree with it (at least in part because I’m not a historian or collector) and think that Rubio’s choice to hold a fundraiser may not have been anti-Semitic, but was exceptionally tone-deaf.

          • The Original Just Me September 23rd, 2015 at 23:26

Okay. I respect your opinion so I will reread his posts and think about it.

The topic had degenerated from Rubio to another poster…

          • The Original Just Me September 24th, 2015 at 05:52

Okay, I walked a way for awhile and then came back and reread his post. I believe he is trying to point out the difference between artifact collecting and shrine building. If so, he is doing a very poor job of it. His article rambles on and loses it’s direction to the point that the reader just doesn’t know where he is going with it. A much shorter and to the point narrative might have served him better. Too many examples.

    • Talibandrew Breitbot September 23rd, 2015 at 20:21

No wonder he never got beyond PFC – he can’t see how bad it looks to hold a fundraiser on Yom Kippur in the home of an individual who shows off Nazi memorabilia.

And where in the article does it say that Harlan Crow is a Nazi sympathizer? Nobody, so buh-bye to your strawman argument, ExPFCClueless.

It’s the presence of Nazi memorabilia that is the problem. At best, it shows Rubio’s advance people are incompetent.

      • ExPFCWintergreen September 23rd, 2015 at 20:56

The Library of Congress has a copy of Mein Kampf. Should everyone avoid Capitol Hill on Jewish holidays? Barnes & Noble carries a vast selection of books on the Third Reich — should no politician ever shop there for fear that a Jewish voter might be in the same ZIP code? This individual also shows of Churchill memorabilia. Christopher Columbus memorabilia. I suppose that would offend Native Americans, so best to avoid that, too? It’s bullshit. It’s penny-ante, non-story, bullshit, ginned up for no other reason than the fact that everyone’s getting bored with Trump so some faux outrage needs to be concocted about Rubio despite the fact that the guy’s already dead in the water.

Oh my, two artworks by Hitler? The man has a museum and has portraits of all the historical leaders from the WW2 era. This is not just a place that extolls National Socialism as Debbie Schultz would have us believe.

But speaking of Hitler, has anyone ever been to the Smithsonian Museum and seen all the Nazi artifacts there? Every bit of it was collected and placed there by our government and maintained by taxpayer dollars. Is DNC chair Schultz upset about that?

    • whatthe46 September 23rd, 2015 at 21:11

it’s a museum you idiot. not a collection of artifacts by a private person. he has this shit in his home and glorifies it and is no different than the asswipes who glorifies the confederate rag and the looser generals of the civil war that were fighting to keep humans as slave and property. you can’t for one fk’n moment, think it’s ok to run for the presidency of the U.S., wherein you’re suppose to represent the people and not a select few, while holding a gathering at a Nazi fk’n wearhouse. you and your disgusting ilk have yet again handed this predsidency to the democrats. keep the insensitivity coming and the outright ignorance. war on women, war on the poor, wanna get rid of healthcare, wanna build imaginary walls, hate gays, hate blacks, hate brown people, hate everyone elses right to worship any religion other than your own. ya’ll some sick somesabithches.

              • ShelleysLeg September 24th, 2015 at 21:11

The Crow family has WAREHOUSES full of stuff that belongs in museums, under guard, climate controlled.

I know, I had the distasteful job of working for them back in the 80s. Pretty awful people.

                • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 02:47

Again, personal, first hand knowledge, AWESOME !

        • The Original Just Me September 24th, 2015 at 05:42

You may say that whatthe is wrong, wrong, wrong, But I would take her thoughts and ideas anytime over your NAZI Propaganda. At least she and many others on here do not try to promote Anti-American garbage like you always do. Total control by your Right Wing NAZI Storm Troopers is just not going to happen.

Very Good narrative but now you need some calming attention. Anything I could do to help ?

        Good call

  12. Robert Smithson September 23rd, 2015 at 23:02

Dateline: Dallas Morning News (21 Mar and 11 Apr 2014) History Abounds Inside Harlan Crows Home

“Protected in cabinets, documents’ signatures read Ponce de Leon, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, George Washington, Robert E. Lee and all the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Paintings on the walls bear the surnames of some of art history’s masters, including Peale, Renoir and Monet, as well as the likes of Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler and Dwight Eisenhower. All told, 8,500 books and manuscripts are housed here”

The others, the evildoers, are below the house’s sight lines, standing in wait to impart their raft of grim history lessons.

“Most of the statues are Communists,” Crow says. The Dallas native acquired the relics one by one as politics in Europe and Asia changed. When a dictator and his henchmen fell out of favor, the next ruler — or the people — symbolically toppled their likenesses in city squares and outside government buildings”.
Is he a Communist supporter too?

I know most of the Crow children. There is the heroin addict who nodded out in his court hearing with the family removing his trust so he wouldn’t OD, the VERY, VERY gay one with red hair, the youngest who fancies himself a race car driver but who manages to wreck more than winning anything. ONLY Lucy, the only girl, and Trammell Jr. are kind of normal.

      • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 02:44

First hand knowledge and experience, that is something Smithson has NEVER had. Your shining light would normally blind this scum bag but he is too stupid to open his eyes.

p.s. i’m not laughing because it’s funny. i’m laughing because i can’t cry. i just don’t get it anymore. if i offended you i’m sorry.

    • Robert Kennedy September 24th, 2015 at 20:21

Well, you know Rubio isn’t boneless. His head is all bone.

  14. William September 24th, 2015 at 00:10

I have a wonderful rifle that was made from a Mauser 98/40. Although it’s a WWII Wehrmacht rifle, it was actually made by the Danuvia arms works in Hungary. The quality and fit is superb. I had the bolt jeweled, and the wood was replaced with a hand fitted French Walnut stock. The receiver and barrel were reblued and the rifle was fitted to my shooting stance. On one occasion a Jewish friend of mine was looking over my modest collection. He noticed the tiny Wehrmacht symbol stamped on the receiver and asked me where I got the gun. I sheepishly explained that it was picked off a battlefield during WWII and smuggled back by a relative. He then said in a matter of fact tone “Then I assume the soldier who was issued this weapon was deceased?”. I replied “I assume so”. He merely smiled and went on to the next rifle.

  15. FDRliberal September 24th, 2015 at 02:27

I’m reminded of the time doofus governor Scott Walker once greeted one of his Jewish constituents with a hearty “Molotov”!

  16. Böcker September 24th, 2015 at 09:37

No one said Rubio was the shiniest penny in the pile.

  17. Frank Wahl September 24th, 2015 at 10:56

Actually, looks like you really can make this stuff up.

  18. stormkite September 24th, 2015 at 11:39

I can think of worse places to have a fundraiser than some RWNJ’s private collection of historical memorabilia, but whoever set this up is pure undiluted GOP Bonehead, and if Rubio didn’t catch on to that… whew. Redefining ‘clueless’ even for the GOP.. and that’s going some.

    • Robert Kennedy September 30th, 2015 at 11:59

      Where? Auschwitz?

      • stormkite September 30th, 2015 at 13:42

That would be one of them, yes….

  19. cecilia September 24th, 2015 at 18:10

“a signed copy of Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf” ???

    WOW, I’m jealous.

no, really. I’m a virtual collector of All Things Hitler (no actual money for real collecting). It’s mostly because part of my family was in Europe during those heady days (sarcasm) so it’s Personal for me. Anyway, when I was born the whole Hitler Thing was still new so I was surrounded by people still smarting from that experience. Every August my father would remind us that my cousin was born on VJ day. And on the other side of the family there were the stories about the Escape from a camp….etc.

    Ah, the memories…..

as to Rubio, I seriously doubt he understands any of this

  20. Robert Kennedy September 24th, 2015 at 20:18

No, his staff isn’t as dumb as a bag of hammers. That’s an insult to hammers.
