The Confederate Flag: Symbol of history and heritage or symbol of hate and racism? Hopefully we are finally coming to realize in this country that it is the latter and not the former. The move by some states in the Deep South to remove this divisive flag from statehouses and other state property is a step in the right direction.

Yet there are still some who still maintain that the Confederate flag is about bravery and honoring those who fought in the Civil War. Doesn’t seem quite fair that the rich plantation owners get to stay safely on their residences; while the dirt poor rabble have to rally around a rectangular bullseye. Someone is getting the short end of the stick on that particular bargan.

October 1862, when the Confederate Congress, after an extensive lobbying campaign, adopted the so called “Twenty Negro Law,” which granted an exemption to an owner, or one overseer on each plantation with twenty or more able-bodied slaves. This provision immediately became unpopular with men serving in the army as is reflected by the sentiments of General D.H. Hill who said “[S]ome examples claim to own twenty negroes, and with justice might claim to be masters of an infinite amount of cowardice.”[1] This provision was amended in 1863 and again in 1864 when the requirement of the $500 payment was changed to a bond to provide 100 pounds of meat to the government for each able-bodied slave.

We don’t “educate them to think.” They come with that ability pre-installed. The education gives them something to think about. And what they were saying is a lot smarter than those so-called “adults” who are in love with that flag. And a lot smarter than most of what you have posted here, I might add.
