White House Appoints Transgender Staffer

Posted by | August 18, 2015 14:00 | Filed under: Good News Politics

The first openly transgender staffer has been appointed by the White House.

The Obama administration has tapped Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, a Latina transgender woman, to be the first openly trans person to serve in the White House.

The announcement was quickly praised by trans advocates, particularly the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), where Freedman-Gurspan previously worked. But it also signals the broader shift in the US over LGBTQ issues — and the growing acceptance of trans rights as a serious, mainstream cause.

“President Obama has long said he wants his Administration to look like the American people. I have understood this to include transgender Americans,” NCTE executive director Mara Keisling said in a statement.

    • Chinese Democracy August 18th, 2015 at 19:31

You know whats gonna freak you right the hayull out? FIFTY PERCENT of 18 to 34 year olds consider themselves something other than ” 100% hetrosexual”

meaning attitudes on sexuality in general are becoming much more fluid.

It takes one of each kind to make a world and thank God that in some cases, it only takes one.

          • The Original Just Me August 20th, 2015 at 13:03

Yup, Independents are Good. I’m am Independent and Boy am I Good. Now, if you believe that, about being good, I have some Ocean Front property here in Idaho that I want to sell. Have a Wonderful day.

            • cecilia August 20th, 2015 at 18:02

I’ve never joined ANY party and sometimes my voter card comes in the mail saying, “Blank”
              That always cracks me up.

              I’m a “Blank” – LOL

              Should I be offended?
              Or complimented ?

at least I’m not republican or teabagger – eeewww
(Eisenhower has to be rolling in his grave)

              • The Original Just Me August 21st, 2015 at 12:10

You and I believe the same. I just tell people I’m wandering in the Wilderness. I was born and raised Republican. That was in Eisenhower’s day. I remember VP Nixon. I went Democrat with JFK and Robert Kennedy. LBJ sent me out into the wilderness. I got into the Idaho Democrats in the 80’s and ran for office a couple of times. I was doing good but I lost faith in the Idaho Democrats so I dropped out and went back to my Wilderness.

                • cecilia August 21st, 2015 at 12:34

I’ve said many times that if Eisenhower was alive and running for something I’d vote for him. NOT because I agree with everything he every said or did. (That “in god we trust” on money was silly), but because the man was reasonable. He could look into the future and tried to mostly do good things.

I don’t expect perfection. I think that’s one of the problems with some people who call themselves democrats They sure like to whine about microscopic minutia.

In politics you have to see the Big Picture. You have to pick your battles. You can’t fix everything. Just fix as much as you can.

the republicans / teabaggers don’t want to fix anything. They just want to sit in the Seats. They have one simple goal.

the democrats are not united because they are all on their knees picking at the carpet fibers. They are only looking at THEIR piece of the carpet and bitching to everyone about what bit of dirt they found there. And when there IS a guy like Obama who has his head UP and looking around they bitch because he’s not “perfect” – ie, isn’t fixing THEIR piece of carpet.

politics in America is f’ed up. People had better get their heads out of their backsides

                  • The Original Just Me August 21st, 2015 at 13:01

Very Good Post. I agree completely. I became politically aware in the first grade of school when I saw Truman’s picture on the class room wall. I do believe Pres. Eisenhower did all he could but he did have his own party troubles as well. The Interstate Highway System is our Monument to his foresight. Even though he built it for military purposes, he did us a fantastic favor. I would have stayed in the Democrats but their leadership is all pazazz and NO leadership inside the Party at any level. Their leaders are only holding their cocktail glasses at parties and saying look at me, I’m SOOO Good. Mean while the working level of the party has No leadership and therefore no direction. I will give the Republicans Quality Credit for their party structure. They get things done. I just don’t like the things they are doing. Politics in the U.S. has always been a fight between the Right and the Left. it started with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson but at least they remained very Good friends . I do not believe there is any kind of friendship in today’s America.

Thanks…I must have been inspired this morning. :)

                      (so, where’s my cookie?) :-0

Let’s hope that Americans get SO fed up they actually ALL get out to vote…and if they really think about who they wish to vote for, they will NOT vote for many of the current morons in congress, and that they listen to Bernie…because HE only talks about issues. We need that conversation

                    • The Original Just Me August 21st, 2015 at 22:35

Cookie ? I don’t give out no stinkin cookie. I give hugs and kisses. On the forehead. But I do make exceptions at times. Chocolate Chip Oatmeal okay ?

    • maggie August 19th, 2015 at 17:58

there won’t be one…they have gone off the social and fiscal cliff…thelma and louise style….;O

      • The Original Just Me August 20th, 2015 at 12:27

I do believe Donald is trying to show them just how nuts they have become since they let the Tea Party in. He will make or break the Republican Party. Either way, the conservative side needs a total makeover Again. We need both Liberal and Conservative sides to stay in the middle but the Conservative side keeps falling off the cliff. Federalists, National Republican, Whigs, and now Republican.

        • maggie August 20th, 2015 at 14:05

;) well the liberals, the progressives. are picking up the center and the left…face it…the republican party needs to work on itself….that may take years…the GOP is not ready for prime time 2016…but they can pick their prom queen….who they pick for their prom queen will say where they want to head as a party…;) Cheers,Maggie

          • The Original Just Me August 21st, 2015 at 12:34

I do believe the Republican Party does not go where the people want it to go. It goes wherever the Party Heads push the people.

            • maggie August 21st, 2015 at 16:37

              yep…you have described them well

              • The Original Just Me August 21st, 2015 at 22:37

As Nutty as the Republicans are getting it is hard to stay in the middle as an Independent.

  7. Tommie August 19th, 2015 at 00:10

Good this should help with Democratic votes since the right would never approve of this and the right are probably trying to find a way to get rid of Raffi, which would mean Raffi would get so paid if that happen!

  8. Ben Grimm August 19th, 2015 at 13:42

If Jennifer Garner had hired Raffi to watch the kids she’d still be married now.

  9. Sue August 19th, 2015 at 23:58

People should be hired on ability not on anything else.. however I am glad that America has a transgender staff member .. and I feel so sorry for those who are who only see the transgender and not the person.. small minded …

    • The Original Just Me August 20th, 2015 at 12:21

Good out look on this. I agree with you.
