More Jaw-Dropping Dashcam Footage From Tianjin

Posted by | August 14, 2015 14:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Pot Luck

New York’s Daily News has arguably the most amazing “dash cam” footage of Wednesday’s multiple explosions in the Chinese port city of Tianjin. There is no audio, which makes the increasing result of the explosions even more terrifuying:

Meanwhile, few answers are emerging as the death toll continues to rise. The New York Times reports:

The high-rise apartment complex closest to Tianjin’s toxic chemical storage inferno was only 2,000 feet away, despite Chinese laws requiring a 3,200-foot minimum distance from hazardous sites.

The disclosure was among the new details emerging on Friday that suggested possible criminal negligence, mixed with rife speculation of an official cover-up, in the aftermath of the fire Wednesday night in Tianjin — China’s third-largest city and a major northeast seaport, about 90 miles east of Beijing.

With the death toll rising to at least 56 on Friday, more than 700 hospitalized and an unknown number still missing in the smoldering wreckage, the fire was shaping up as one of China’s worst industrial calamities. It appeared to expose the kinds of regulatory lapses that have plagued the country’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse.

Government officials, acutely aware of concerns over the fire, have sought to suppress unauthorized information. They seemed unprepared for the tough questions posed at a news conference in Tianjin on Friday, including why hazardous chemicals had been stockpiled so near populated areas. They abruptly ended the conference.

China is not having a good year. The economic bubble is bursting, corruption appears to be running rampant, the government is playing games with it’s stock market and currency and now this. I wonder what might be next …

I expect a Chinese version of Frank Drebin to avoid answering any and all questions regarding lack of safety or regulation violations.

It’s crap like this, that leads to people taking control away from their government. If the Communists can’t protect them, they’ll build a government that can.

This is all part of the “growing pains” of becoming an industrialized nation. The U.S./UK/France went through these types of disasters, human rights issues, environmental issues when they when through the industrial revolution.
Too bad other countries, specifically China, isn’t learning from those past failures/success.

Right-wing Republicans want to go back to the unregulated dog-eat-dog robber baron era, with child labor, no environmental protection, no workers’ rights.

Too right, they want to recapture America and drag it back 200 years.

In the beginning, I heard a story about the explosion happened when firefighters were putting out a chemical fire with water and this is what caused these massive explosions. I haven’t heard that again, I don’t know if stories are now changed for whatever reason. I was just wondering if anyone else heard reasons for this tragedy?
