Dr. Seuss Has New Book
Dr, Seuss, who died in 1991, has a new book coming out called What Pet Should I Get.
Theodor Seuss Geisel died in 1991, leaving behind not just fond memories, but boxes and boxes of stuff. Soon after his death, his widow, Audrey, packed up most of the stuff and shipped it away for proper archiving.
But about two years ago, Seuss’ longtime assistant Claudia Prescott called Cathy Goldsmith, a publisher at Random House, to report some news even more exciting than when the Grinch’s heart got so big it broke out of the X-ray machine: She’d found something.
Goldsmith raced to California and was thrilled as she flipped through a trove of fragile originals. Seuss had drawn his cartoons on onion paper and taped the typed text of “What Pet Should I Get” onto the sheets.
The writing and drawings were complete, but still required some art decisions, backgrounds and shadings. Goldsmith picked from the palette created by Seuss.
“I tried to do the job he would do if he were doing it today,” Goldsmith says. “I also wanted it to be a piece that when somebody looked at, they would know it is a Dr. Seuss book.”
It’s a little different, of course, considering that times change. The book is believed to have been written between 1958 and 1962, and back then, we spoke about pets a bit differently. So Seuss’ script was tweaked to encourage people to adopt, rather than buy, pets. This won kudos from PETA.

Geisel Rocks!
Loved him as a “yute”, and love him to this day!

I grew up reading Dr. Seuss books but was disturbed at really early work which depicts African Americans as the n-word and slaves, which was to be sold at a auction and nobody bought it! Sorry guys and gals, you know i am with you but on this one i might stand alone!

You are not alone, that disturbed me as well. It is hard to realize when you learn that someone you romanticized and put on a pedestal was actually a human like the rest of us. It is even harder when your realize these fellow humans had beliefs such as going against fellow humans simply because of the color of their skin. Dr. Seuss books seemed to be so happy and lighthearted, it is hard to understand how a person with hate in his heart could create them.
I understand Dr. Seuss was written in a time where these beliefs were a lot more common than they are now, but if you are willing to stick up for what it correct even if you are going against the majority, that is what a good human does.

I’m so happy. Ted Cruz will have fresh material to read on the floor of the Senate to his Republican colleagues.
