The Hill: Trump Threatens Third Party Run

Posted by | July 23, 2015 09:00 | Filed under: Politics

A big get for the DC political wonk daily:

Donald Trump says the chances that he will launch a third-party White House run will “absolutely” increase if the Republican National Committee is unfair to him during the 2016 primary season.

“The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy,” the business mogul told The Hill in a 40-minute interview from his Manhattan office at Trump Tower on Wednesday. “The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”

Pressed on whether he would run as a third-party candidate if he fails to clinch the GOP nomination, Trump said that “so many people want me to, if I don’t win.”

“I’ll have to see how I’m being treated by the Republicans,” Trump said. “Absolutely, if they’re not fair, that would be a factor.”

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus called Trump earlier this month asking him to tone down his controversial rhetoric. More recently, the RNC rebuked him for saying that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is not a war hero. Trump didn’t apologize but has since said that the 2008 Republican presidential nominee is a war hero.

Go right ahead. Kill any slim chance of the republicans getting to the White House except with a ticket.

  2. Obewon July 23rd, 2015 at 09:33

Trump / Palin’16~ Best wishes for cannibalizing the Gullible Old People Party.

  3. Tommie July 23rd, 2015 at 10:11

PLEASE DO, PLEASE DO, PLEASE DO so we can watch the rest of the right’s field just crumble like a building!

    • Larry Schmitt July 23rd, 2015 at 16:58

Crumble like the financial backing behind a tRump building.

      • Tommie July 23rd, 2015 at 23:16

And his beach front property in Baja, Mexico!

Trumpet is the ultimate definition of the ‘Bull in the china shop’… in this case, the GOP’s shop. It doesn’t matter if he runs a Third Party or GOP, he’s already broken the repukes into several pieces… damage already done!
Repukes wondering: What the hell just happened?
    Trump just Trampled you!

    • Dwendt44 July 23rd, 2015 at 11:37

Perhaps, but if he were to back out now, the rift in the GOP most likely would heal. We don’t want that. The GOP has degenerated into the wild-eyed crazy uncle no one really wants around. It needs to crawl off into a cave somewhere and die a slow but inevitable death.

  5. William July 23rd, 2015 at 10:19

    YES.YES.YES.

  6. labman57 July 23rd, 2015 at 10:26

    Learn your history, Donald.
A “third party” run will only help the Democrats in the general election.
But of course, Trump has continually demonstrated that the only person that matters is Trump.

    • Glen July 23rd, 2015 at 11:06

You know, part of me wonders if Trump may not actually be aiming for exactly that – splitting the Republican base to help the Democrats.

The only reason I doubt it is that he’d be squandering his own money and reputation in the process, and for guys like him, reputation is important, and money is everything. And if he wanted to really split the Republicans, he could easily have simply backed someone else for the run, someone that would cause similar havoc (like Palin), and remain relatively clean, himself.

      • tracey marie July 23rd, 2015 at 11:44

Guys like him depend on their ego to define his reputation, he feels everything he says is correct.

        • Glen July 23rd, 2015 at 11:48

True. Which is why he’d have used someone else to do it if he was trying to manipulate the system in favour of the Democrats. I’m saying, if it weren’t for the specifics of how he’s doing it, I’d have thought he was actually trying to skew things in favour of the Dems (considering he was happy to say great things about Obama, Clinton, etc, prior to about 2010)… but his ego wouldn’t let him do it (manipulate in favour of the Democrats) in such a way. Which means he really does believe what he’s saying.

          • tracey marie July 23rd, 2015 at 11:52

He does believe, but he also wants to get even with the gop for dismissing him. IMO

            • anothertoothpick July 23rd, 2015 at 12:59

You and Glen make some very good points which I agree with.

My two cents is Trump loves the spotlight and this is the biggest light that can be found.

Here is what scares me. Unless he takes a run at Scott Walker, which I don’t believe he has YET? But planned or unplanned he is setting the table for the billionaire favorite Walker.

Walker has been cheating his way to winning elections since high school, (think Carl Rove, dubya and Florida 2000)and he is the last guy working class people need in the white house.

              • tracey marie July 23rd, 2015 at 16:11

So very true, the country, the environment and the poor would suffer terribly.

              • jasperjava July 23rd, 2015 at 19:42

Cheating will only get you so far. Walker will not beat Clinton, no way no how. ESPECIALLY if Trump runs as an independent and siphons away a good portion of their idiot base.

    • NIGHTWATCH ABCP ........ July 23rd, 2015 at 16:40

OHHHH, you MUST have forgotten “PRESIDENT H. Ross Perot” ……….

  7. Foundryman July 23rd, 2015 at 10:28

Sounds like a darn good idea to me.

  8. The Original Just Me July 23rd, 2015 at 10:48

I have a spare nickel here. If he makes a third party run, I’m sending it to him to help.

    • jasperjava July 23rd, 2015 at 19:40

Ummm… you DO know that the stamp alone will cost you more…
Luckily, Trump doesn’t need your nickel.

  9. anothertoothpick July 23rd, 2015 at 11:17

I might consider volunteering to help Trump’s campaign.

As long as I don’t have to give him my cell phone number.

    • whatthe46 July 23rd, 2015 at 11:55

“As long as I don’t have to give him my cell phone number.” LOL

      • anothertoothpick July 23rd, 2015 at 12:43

Did you catch the LAME youTube clip that Graham cracker put up about him slashing and chopping up his cell phone.

It was stupid. They can’t even get self ridicule right.

        • whatthe46 July 23rd, 2015 at 13:34

yeah i saw that. and these idiots want to run the country. pathetic.

          • Merlin July 24th, 2015 at 01:13

Those idiots have been running the country for 40 years!

  10. labman57 July 23rd, 2015 at 11:19

Many of Trump’s supporters are actually encouraging him to run as an Independent. Well, we already knew these folks were clueless …

If your objective is to win the general election, then you need to run as either a Democrat or Republican. It is completely naive to believe that an Independent will garner enough electoral votes to win the presidency.

On the other hand, if your primary goal is to “stir the pot” and force candidates to discuss issues that they would prefer to avoid, then running as an Independent may suffice.

In Trump’s case, the motivation for his “3rd Party Candidacy” threat is to exact vengeance upon the RNC for a perceived slight, thereby damaging the Republican Party’s chances to win the presidency.

    • tracey marie July 23rd, 2015 at 11:42

I have to agree with you, he does behave like a bully who is scorned and promises revenge.

    • NIGHTWATCH ABCP ........ July 23rd, 2015 at 16:38

Just remember that H. Ross Perot ran as an INDEPENDENT in 1992 AND on the Reform Party ticket in 1996. Did we EVER call H. Ross Perot “MR PRESIDENT ??” ENOUGH SAID – NEXT …………….

    • Robert Kennedy July 23rd, 2015 at 19:13

Anything that destroys Republican plans is a very good thing for America and the world.

  11. Mike July 23rd, 2015 at 11:53

    A dream come true….

  12. jwong318 July 23rd, 2015 at 11:57

  13. Pilotshark July 23rd, 2015 at 12:21

Donald run as long as you can for the top spot on the republicans side, then switch and run third party when they dump you.

But do not give up your position at the steering wheel of the clown bus.

lets all say, my pop-corn please :-)

  14. crc3 July 23rd, 2015 at 12:37

When DT said he didn’t make mistakes I shook my head and said…”WHAT A POMPOUS ASS HE IS!!!!” Anyone disagree??

    • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 13:38

Not at all, and I’m quite enjoying his freakshow.

    • Robert Kennedy July 23rd, 2015 at 19:12

      5 bankruptcies say otherwise.

  15. Suzanne McFly July 23rd, 2015 at 15:14

On MSNBC, I seen a poll that was taken asking if rumpster could have a chance to win if he ran as a third party candidate and the results were 56% no and 44% yes?!?!?!?…wtf? Yes? How is that percentage above 2%?

    • bobby1122 July 23rd, 2015 at 18:04

There’s a new MSNBC coming to town- hopefully it won’t have 4 skankles who feel they don’t have to pay their TAXES.– http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/04/four-msnbc-hosts-plagued-by-tax-debt-205942.html

      • Suzanne McFly July 23rd, 2015 at 18:22

I check your reporter dig and I raise you one leader in the polls to represent the republican party in a Presidential election…http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06/30/the-dumbest-stuff-donald-trump-has-ever-said.html

      • Robert Kennedy July 23rd, 2015 at 19:12

MSNBC is owned by Comcast, a right wing supporter.

      • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 21:18

It’ll be basically the same old fake liberal MSNBC. Morning Joke, chock full of the same Georgetown and Upper East Side douchebag pundits who don’t have clue one as to what John and Jane Average really think, will still be there, along with stealth “Randroid” Andrea Mitchell Greenspan and Beltway villager tools “Makes Me” Chuck Todd and Luke “The Puke” Russert, all of whom have way more sway than their dull prime-time lineup.

The biggest problem with MSNBC in prime time is that the three shows cover the same goddamn “top story” and the analysis is redundant and predictable. Ironically, the guy they are letting go – Ed Schultz – covers more subjects and territory than any of the prime timers, and his bookers get some of the most informative and entertaining guest bobbleheads.

But that should surprise nobody. Andrew Lack and Phil Griffin are the most unimaginative news execs in American television today.

The situation just might change based on a sighting of a certain ESPN anchorman’s agent doing lunch with an NBC exec in midtown a couple days ago – although I have to admit that I doubt that NBC’s corporate overlords at Comcast – or, as the smart set calls it, Neoconcast – would ever let THAT happen, even if the guy with the big head has the potential to eviscerate the somnambulistic fare at CNN and the misinfotainment at FOX (even though there are occasional nights that I do enjoy Greta Van Susteren’s show).

      • Talibandrew Breitbot July 23rd, 2015 at 21:27

Politico? You mean that right wing politics site that’s maybe two evolutionary steps above the Drudge Report? The online joke of a site that neglected to mention that both Melissa Harris-Perry and Joy Reid are disputing the IRS’s claims and challenging them in court? The same Politico that refuses to consider that these liberal pundits are being targeted in much the same way that Tea Party groups have been?

        Boobie86U, you are a joke.

    • Judgeforyourself37 July 23rd, 2015 at 20:54

OMG, Suzanne, if that MSNBC poll is accurate, has the whole country gone bats$%t crazy?
BTW, I never miss Rachel on MSNBC, and when I’m home, I have that channel on.

      • Suzanne McFly July 24th, 2015 at 10:26

I am hoping people are just screwing with the pollsters.

  16. ResCogitans July 23rd, 2015 at 15:38

A third party candidacy is a given. The GOP would rather Bush or Walker face Clinton, that’s their ideal scenario. Having Trump continue to divert attention away from their goal is costing them valuable time.

  17. bobby1122 July 23rd, 2015 at 18:02

Maybe Trump is counting on voters being sick of coward Repubs who were overwhelmingly elected to stop the semi dictator Obama from ignoring the Constitution, sick of Dems with kisses for ILLEGAL murderers and the whole “inside Washington cesspool”. Time will tell.

    • billr July 23rd, 2015 at 18:48

What has he ignored in the Constitution. You a judge? I hope you know he was a Professor of Constitutional law.

      • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 21:06

… at an historically conservative-leaning elite law school at the University of Chicago.

    • Robert Kennedy July 23rd, 2015 at 19:10

The inside Washington cesspool includes a few Democrats and every Republican. And the semi dictator was Cheney.

    • jasperjava July 23rd, 2015 at 19:34

      “ILLEGAL murderers”

      Are there any “legal” ones?
I suppose you mean the “legal” murders committed under George W. B*$h?

      • NW10 July 23rd, 2015 at 20:10

        Are there any “legal” ones?

There are, and they wear blue and carry badges/guns.

      • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 21:05

        Are there any “legal” ones?

If bobby1122 had his way, I betcha Dylann Storm Roof would be a legal murderer.

    • Larry Schmitt July 23rd, 2015 at 20:04

Yeah, that Obama, he never could do anything all the way, he’s just a semi dictator. You forgot communist socialist fascist Muslim Kenyan atheist. The Donald crawled out of his own cesspool every bit as nasty as the Washington one.

    • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 21:04

Funny, but I remember the Wall Street Journal mentioning several weeks ago that deportations were WAY UP under “the semi dictator Obama.” I know, I know, it’s just another left-wing rag…

And sure, that pompadoured blowhard The Donald can go ahead fearmonger about an undocumented criminal who killed eight less people that bobby1122’s KKKBFF Dylann Storm Roof, but you get nothing but crickets when you ask the GOP why they continue to SLASH funding for ICE and immigration enforcement.

  18. Robert Kennedy July 23rd, 2015 at 19:09

    Please do Unca’ Donald.

  19. NW10 July 23rd, 2015 at 20:09

DO IT Donald!!! Your country NEEDS you!!!!! /s

  20. Judgeforyourself37 July 23rd, 2015 at 20:49

Face it folks, The Donald is the Republican Party on steroids. OMG, can you just picture him or Scott Walker, for that matter, negotiating with a foreign leader? No? Well, neither can I. Hells bells we’d be at war with every nation on this good planet, Earth.
Walker wants to “bomb Iran,” and The Donald thinks that folks from Mexico are all drug king pins and rapists. That Republican Clown car may eschew The Donald, but, he is carnival barker who announces, or should I say denounces, all those clowns as they march by.

    • dave-dr-gonzo July 23rd, 2015 at 20:59

“The Donald is the Republican Party on steroids…”

More like a cocktail of steroids, ecstasy, and meth.
