U.S.-Cuba Relations Formally Restored

Posted by | July 20, 2015 07:33 | Filed under: Good News Politics

As of Midnight, Cuba and the United States have restored full diplomatic relations.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is due to hold talks with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez later in the day in Washington.

Despite the historic shift, both sides admit to lingering difficulties.

There were still “issues that we don’t see eye to eye on”, a US state department spokesman said…

Restrictions on Americans wanting to travel to Cuba remain in place, as does the wider US trade embargo banning most American companies from doing business in Cuba.

Cuba says the embargo – which it calls a blockade – is hugely damaging to its economy.

President Raul Castro has urged President Barack Obama to lift it, calling it the main stumbling block towards normalisations. But the US Congress would have to vote on the issue.

Have fun getting ANYTHING through congress, it’s so tight there they can’t get enough air to breathe. ( You can tell by the brain damage.)

They’re only interested in keeping the status quo, even though it hasn’t worked for the last 50+ years. Coming up with a solution would require them to actually think.

Yep. I always thought that they had lots of aids around so somebody was always there to remind them to breathe.

Ted Cruz your country needs you to come on down! Restrictions on Americans wanting to travel to Cuba remain in place, Yet, just over 98,000 U.S. citizens visited Cuba in 2012, plus those numbers do not include more than 350,000 Cuban Americans estimated by travel agents and U.S. diplomats to have visited Cuba in 2012. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/18/us-cuba-usa-tourism-idUSBRE99H0J320131018

Imagine what all those dollars can do for them. They might actually be able to get a car newer than a 56 Bel Air.

Yeah, I have a sailor friend who decided to visit Cuba on a lark and somehow the State Department found out she had sailed there and has hassled her about it. We should open trade and travel right away.

There’s a lot of potential there, Cuba could become The Jewel of the Gulf or Caribbean.
