Oklahoma Republican Party Compares Hungry Food Stamp Recipients To Wild Animals
The Republican Party of Oklahoma has decided that it would be a good idea to compare Americans who are on Food Stamps to wild animals.
So the Oklahoma GOP shared the following on their Facebook page, apparently not realizing that everyone in the world would then be able to see it:

The prejudicial presumptions and favorite right wing talking points …
— that federal assistance for families struggling to make ends meet will only promote sloth,
— that those who are out of work would prefer to subsist on welfare rather than be gainfully employed,
— that only unemployed people need food stamps,
— and that poor people are inherently inferior to those who earn a more substantial income
… are completely baseless and perpetuate the ignorance-based stereotype of people in need as being lazy parasites on society … no doubt a deliberate tactical decision by the callous propaganda peddlers in the right wing blogosphere.
Congressional Republicans to constituents: “Can’t make ends meet? It sucks to be you!”

Where Is The Outrage Over Corporate Welfare?
$78 billion to feed 46 million hungry people v $110 billion to feed 965 hungry corporations.
And while I’m looking for outrage, where are the liberals? The 965 companies in the report received over $110 billion of public money. Berkshire Hathaway, a company with $485 billion in assets and $20 billion in profits, received over $1 billion of that money. Its chair, Warren Buffett, is worth about $58 billion. Buffett, by the way, is still a darling of the left.
It’s understandable the right falls for this crap, but we on the left need to be more vocal.
Boeing got $13 billion…hell, Nike got $2 billion.
Suzanne McFly July 14th, 2015 at 14:41
Well by saving billionaires millions, they can have their campaigns financed, family trips and clothes paid for, golf for free, be connected to the ultrarich,…Corporate Welfare is good according to politicians and their voters support their politicians and are so blind to what is really happening.
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 17:55
I’m inclined to think Buffett would give up the corporate welfare. he takes it because it’s available.
Mike July 14th, 2015 at 18:56
I’m not…if he didn’t want to take advantage of the program he wouldn’t have for the last 14 years.
Larry Schmitt July 14th, 2015 at 13:42
They think they’re being original. Someone posted this on my facebook page years ago. I’ve said it before, but it bears (get it?) repeating, republicans only care about children when they’re in the womb. Once they’re actual people, they’re more than willing to let them starve.
whatthe46 July 14th, 2015 at 14:19
i call them pro-birth, not pro-life by any stretch of the imagination.
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 17:53
Actually they are anti-abortion. Abortion is about icky sex things, so it’s wrong.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 13:58
Anyone who thinks they’re actually calling poor people “animals”, needs to go back to school and study “comparative analysis”. They’re simply pointing out the irony of the belief that handing out free food to the poor will somehow make them not want more free stuff, while doing the same to bears will make them want MORE free stuff.
That being said, I don’t agree with the sentiment. If someone needs help and can’t work, or can’t FIND work, food stamps are not a needless handout. It’s a helping hand. For those who get caught gaming the system or those who REFUSE to work, they should be cut off. Some people can’t seem to grasp the difference between genuine need and laziness.
whatthe46 July 14th, 2015 at 14:18
your whole post is ridiculous!
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 14:51
Really? What points are ridiculous?
Mike July 14th, 2015 at 15:23
The attempt to get anyone with a 5th grade education to believe it wasn’t a comparison of animal behavior to that of human beings.
In logic we call it an “argument from analogy”…where perceived similarities are used as a basis to infer some further similarity.
And it is fallacious…..
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 16:02
Yes, but comparing behavior isn’t the same as hurling insults or calling names. It’s nothing more than a comparison of reaction to a given set of circumstances. I didn’t see it as being mean-spirited or insulting.
rg9rts July 14th, 2015 at 16:05
Maybe YOU should try it out.I’ll bet they even have foodstamps in Illinois
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 16:09
I’m able to work. If I ever become UNable to work, I have no problem knowing that there’s a safety net, there. I didn’t say anything against those who GENUINELY need help.
rg9rts July 14th, 2015 at 16:21
The gopee assumes that anyone who applies is disingenuous
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 19:04
I haven’t seen a single instance of a GOP member saying that ALL applicants are trying to cheat the system, or that they’re ALL mooching. Can you point me to such an example?
rg9rts July 15th, 2015 at 05:09
Give me a break…and they love all immigrants…stop playing barracks lawyer… you’re brighter than that
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 09:30
They’re against ILLEGAL immigrants being here. Not the ones who follow the law. I have to agree with that stance. Same with welfare recipiants. They have no patience for those who cheat the system, but they don’t claim that all applicants are there to cheat. They also want to see strict limits on how much a person can get in benefits, over a certain period of time, before they’re cut off. I don’t agree with that philosophy, because hardships don’t tend to keep a schedule.
rg9rts July 15th, 2015 at 09:50
You DON’T know a damn thing about the system do you? 2 years LIFETIME benefits among other things… Maybe YOU should try it out.
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 10:39
In Illinois, it’s 60 months, but there are ways out of that time limit. Hardships and such. Many ways to “stop the clock”.
rg9rts July 15th, 2015 at 10:50
Not in New York..
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 10:54

because animals and poor people behave the same? they called names and disparaged the poor once again
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 16:22
I saw no such thing. It was a non-malicious comparison, nothing more.
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 21:04
Rose colored glasses?
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 09:49
No, I’m just not a thin-skinned whiner, looking for insults around every corner.
Mike July 14th, 2015 at 18:41
My suggestion is to look a bit closer. The entire point of the post (on FB) was to conflate those on food stamps with the habits or behavior of wild animals. No offense, but you seem to be the only one not making the connection.
tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 14:23
82% of people on food assistance are children, the nerve of them to not get a job and stop being moochers. The rest are elderly, disabled and Military.
they did call them animals, it was deliberate becuase they knew they would have people like you defending the filth and calling for children, the elderly and disabled to get a job.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 14:50
Foodstamps are in the name of the responsible adult, with the children as beneficiaries. I’m speaking about able-bodied, responsible adults. Thanks.
tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 14:57
working parents…so who should get a job first, the children, the disabled or the elderly?
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 15:56
You obviously didn’t understand me. I didn’t suggest that children, the disabled OR the elderly should work. Glad I could clear that up.
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 17:50
How about the military that needs food stamps to feed their children? Are they ‘moochers’ as well?
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 18:53
No, they’re working, but unable to make ends meet on what they bring in. That is a valid use of the welfare system. I think I said those UNWILLING to work, when they’re able. How can you people keep missing that part?
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 21:04
We get the point, we just are amazed by your lack of getting the reasoning. VERY FEW are ‘unwilling’ to work. It’s hard to work when there are no jobs. Plant closings, consolidations, outsourcing, and to some extent, mechanization have reduced the job openings to a lot less than there once was.
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 09:58
But, they ARE out there. I was at my cousin’s house not long ago and there was a couple BRAGGING about how they get all this free stuff from the government (subsidized housing, WIC, cash assistance, LINK card) and haven’t had to work for 3 years. I asked them if they were trying to find jobs and they looked at me like I was nuts. “Why f**k up a good thing?”
I know they’re the exception, not the rule, but those people ROYALLY pissed me off, that night. I work my butt off and these people were just sitting back, taking it easy on my dime. True, they weren’t living “high off the hog”, as it were, but they were comfortable enough that they didn’t see the sense in having to toil for their income.
As far as the rarity of jobs, there’s always SOMETHING. I’d rather see able-bodied people get a minimum wage job and still collect supplemental assistance, than not work at all. At least, then, they’re paying something back into the system. I’ve shoveled horse crap, for minimum wage, just so I could have SOME kind of work. It was a terrible job and I hated every second of it, but it was work.
Larry Schmitt July 14th, 2015 at 15:18
So you make the children suffer because the parents are irresponsible? That’s good to know.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 15:54
The children don’t have to go hungry. If the adult has gamed the system, they’re obviously resourceful enough to succeed in the workforce. They either go out and provide for their children, honestly, or the children are removed to a home where they are well cared for. The parents who genuinely can’t provide for their families, are the ones who need assistance. The ones who defraud the system are nothing but criminals. Thankfully, welfare fraud is the aberration and not the common occurrence.
Larry Schmitt July 14th, 2015 at 16:40
But, as with voter fraud, another “crime” that republicans think is running rampant, the rate of food stamp fraud is much lower than they would like us to believe. Their solution is to make it harder for everyone to get assistance, and lower the amount.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 18:56
I admit, it’s lower than many would have us believe, but we can always do more to combat fraudulent welfare claims.
rg9rts July 14th, 2015 at 16:04
May you never have to suffer the indignity of being caught in the system….There is a difference between aid to dependent children and food stamps…believe it or not
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 16:10
Aid to dependent children and food stamps all fall under the same umbrella, in Illinois. They’re all administered from the ADC office. Even adult food stamps are administered from ADC.
Red Mann July 14th, 2015 at 17:25
Are you counting all of those who lost their jobs in the 2008 debacle and can’t find work because corporations are making massive profits and not hiring? How about those whose jobs were outsourced and there are no jobs they qualify for?
http://www.fns.usda.gov/fraud/what-snap-fraud
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 18:55
Did you read my original post? I believe I differentiated, quite clearly, the difference between those who are unable to work, unable to FIND work and those who are able, but REFUSE to work.
Red Mann July 14th, 2015 at 20:20
So, how many fall into the won’t work category, how do you identify them and what action would you take? From the referenced article the enforcement efforts are very strenuous as it is. Seems to me this falls into the “Welfare Queen in a Cadillac” and the “Rampant Voter Fraud” stories area.
illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 10:33
You don’t have to have a high rate of fraudsters, to want to correct the problems that allow them to take advantage. Every single instance of fraud should be rooted out and corrected. One is one too many. There are ways to verify those eligible to work and those who are disabled. If someone claims to be unable to work, you can require verification from the applicant’s physician. Once you identify someone who’s able to work, you put a requirement in place, that he/she has to submit so many resumes and/or applications, per month, until a job is offered. If the applicant refuses a job, he/she must justify the refusal. Unjustifiable refusals will be counted and, after a certain number is reached, termination of benefits will be implemented. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable set of requirements.
Red Mann July 15th, 2015 at 21:47
So, spending millions to stop SNAP fraud in the thousands or spending millions to stop virtually non-existent voter fraud, that has an actual rate of a tiny part of 1% is reasonable to you? Some one has to be paid to do all that highly detailed checking and, thanks to the right’s infantile fear of raising taxes, there aren’t enough resources available. Things out in the real world are a little more complicated than your delusional view of things.
illinoisboy1977 July 16th, 2015 at 14:25
It won’t take that much money to implement the safeties I suggested. At least, not if it’s administered correctly. All it really requires is the proper forms and cooperation from potential employers. An interviewee hands his check-off sheet to an interviewer and the interviewer signs a line, verifying that the person showed up for his/her interview. Then, during the next welfare appointment, the welfare recipient hands that sheet to the caseworker. The caseworker chooses sheets at random, on a monthly or quarterly basis, to verify signatures. I don’t think they’d need millions of dollars for something like that.
tracey marie July 16th, 2015 at 14:33
what makes you think interviews are always done in person, the initial is usually done on the phone.
illinoisboy1977 July 16th, 2015 at 14:39
In that case, I’m sure the interviewer could fire off a quick email to the caseworker. There are ways to keep track, that won’t cost out the wazoo.

I was in an Aldi’s once when a man about 30 years old came up to me and wanted me to buy his food stamps so he could get some cash. I told him that he should be ashamed of himself for taking advantage of the largesse of hard working taxpayers like myself and that he should be a man and go get a job and support himself.
tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 17:20

Don’t forget Fox’s surfer who bought lobster with his food stamps. He represented the epidemic of fraud that had no facts to back it up.

an idiot is now the norm to the right, they use it to take from the poor and give to the wealthy and corporations…while screaming free market !
arc99 July 14th, 2015 at 14:37
The post is obscene as far as I am concerned.
I am pretty good at comparative analysis. The statement is quite clear in meaning. It implies that people and animals will behave the exact same way under a specific set of conditions.
As I read the statement, my unavoidable conclusion is that the post tells us that poor people are as inherently incapable as animals of determining when it is appropriate to seek help and when it is not. In my book, that most certainly is calling poor people “animals”.
This is just another variation on Ronald Reagan’s Cadillac-driving welfare queen mythology and another indicator that the GOP’s self professed “pro life” views, mysteriously disappear once the child is born.
Larry Schmitt July 14th, 2015 at 14:47
And this reasoning also led the Reagan administration to label ketchup a vegetable.
arc99 July 14th, 2015 at 14:51
of course, the post does not discuss the reality that many of the people who are on the food stamp rolls in record numbers, are there because of the economic crash given to us by the previous administration.
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 17:48
If not Republican policies in general. Outsourcing jobs to sweatshop countries doesn’t help people find jobs.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 14:54
I would LOVE it, if ketchup was a vegetable! I could tell the doctor that I’ve dramatically increased my vegetable intake and I wouldn’t be lying.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 14:53
As I said, I don’t agree with the sentiment that ALL recipients are moochers. But, I disagree that they are calling people “animals”. It’s a simple behavioral comparison, nothing more.
tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 14:59
which is calling them animals.
arc99 July 14th, 2015 at 15:05
I took my freshman year comparative logic course in fall 1970.
I remember enough of the class to know that when the conclusion is that Group A will behave exactly like Group B, you are stating there is no difference between the groups when all other variables are equalized.
No difference = (poor people = animals).
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 15:55
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree, then.
bpollen July 14th, 2015 at 16:28

“They’re simply pointing out the irony of the belief that handing out free food to the poor will somehow make them not want more free stuff, while doing the same to bears will make them want MORE free stuff”
They are equating poor people with animals. Throw out phrases like “comparative analysis” all you want, that doesn’t change the fact that they are DIRECTLY comparing people to animals. If they were NOT, there would be no so-called irony to comment about. And, if you look waaaay up at the top of the page, you’ll find that the TITLE of the blogpost is “Oklahoma Republican Party Compares Hungry Food Stamp Recipients To Wild Animals.”
Most sentient beings are able to discern the difference between “they’re like animals” and “they’re animals.”
Dwendt44 July 14th, 2015 at 18:00
Of course people that get food stamps want more. You can’t live on the food stamp allotment. It’s been cut a time or two and you couldn’t really live in the first place. You MIGHT, just might, be able to exist on SNAP originally, but now, NO. Anyone wonder why there’s a big demand for food pantries, and food share outlets, etc., it’s due to the cuts in food stamps and the increases in prices this year and last year.
And let’s all remember that SNAP doesn’t buy bath soap, laundry soap, toothpaste, etc…
whatthe46 July 14th, 2015 at 18:19

We also need to remember that welfare fraud is about 1.3%… Medicare fraud is estimated from 3-10 percent of all billings.
illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 19:00
Comparing to a thing, does not equate naming them that thing. Sorry, but you can compare one thing to another without saying that it, because it’s similar in behavior or some other characteristic, IS that thing.
bpollen July 15th, 2015 at 03:00

I really enjoy your graphic snarks which are usually right on target. In this case however, the numbers are off by quite a bit. In 2013 total SNAP expenditures were a tad under $80 billion. You can see the figures for yourself here:
http://www.fns.usda.gov/sites/default/files/pd/SNAPsummary.pdf
Your point of course is that the real (and needless) welfare chiselers and moochers are the elites who pay to game the system and then whine like little babies if anyone else, mostly the poor (who in virtually all cases are actually THE WORKING POOR) receive any kind of “handouts.”
Figures for 2014 show that food stamp participation levels have decreased to a bit over 46 million with an 8% dollar reduction in benefit amounts over the previous year. In a population of over 320 million, do you realize that is only 7 percent of the population uses SNAP?
Typically the most vocal critics of the SNAP program actually receive WAY more in federal benefits via any year’s personal implementation of tax credits, tax deferrals and tax deductions, etc. Are they clueless or just a-holes?
William July 14th, 2015 at 19:07

It is a tactic as old as time, dehumanize the opposition so that when cruelty is used it becomes more justifiable and garners less empathy, thus easier to employ.
CandideThirtythree July 14th, 2015 at 19:52
Yea, that was tenet #4 on the Nazi checklist. Strange how the republicans have all the exact same tenets as the Nazis but they call everyone else Nazis.
Warman1138 July 14th, 2015 at 20:16
And fascists and socialists and communists etc.
CandideThirtythree July 15th, 2015 at 00:21
You don’t even know what any of those are… you just parrot what Fox Noise tells you to parrot.
Warman1138 July 15th, 2015 at 07:05
I was being sarcastic.

Oh thank you, I was so hoping that there was not suddenly an onslaught of trolls here. Not that I expect any liberal site to be troll free but so far this one has had a small enough population of them as not to be emetic.

The Republican Party and the Nazis have a great deal in common.
Their ‘wish list’ is almost identical.
GUESS THE PARTY.
This political party is well known and has some
interesting positions. Can you guess which political
party this is:
Anti-abortion
Anti union
Wishes to criminalize homosexuality
Uses religion for it’s political purposes.
Belittles those of other cultures for ‘not fitting in’.
Demonizes those of other religions.
Considers those of other races inferior.
Suspicious of intellectuals.
Have plan to use the public schools to teach only party approved subjects and information.
Strongly pro military to the point of bankrupting the country to building
more and more military weapons systems and directing much research into
weapons and strategies.
Advocates using military might to influence the conduct of other countries.
What’s your guess?
If you guessed the Republican Party you are close but no cigar. It’s the
National Socialist Party also known as the Nazis.
Surprised? Or maybe not.
CandideThirtythree July 15th, 2015 at 00:25
Nope, they are all the same for republicans and Nazis.
And you do know that there was NOTHING socialist about Nazis don’t you?
Hitler named his party that because he is evil and wanted to fool people into thinking he was a good guy, just like several other fascist dictators did… in Russia and Libya for example.
But you Foxbots are too stupid to figure out that evil people lie….that is why you keep voting republican.
CandideThirtythree July 15th, 2015 at 00:27
Oh and another thing…that naming things the opposite of what they are… that is 100% republican… like Citizens United and Americans for Prosperity and all of the other dishonest things that republicans name things.

When I was at school in the UK we were taught that the USA was the land of plenty where no none went hungry and after WWII the Americans fed Europe for three years. Then there was USA leadership in the World Food Program.
F_cons July 14th, 2015 at 19:02
I cant comment on what it was like in the past but now, it’s easy to see the only people fed by America are the rich, priviledged (through no effort on their own) and we now vilify anyone in need

OK used to be a blue state, back before about 1970. So was Texas- in both states the Democrats were right of center and more like moderate Republican elsewhere with one big difference. Back then they still has just enough populism in their souls to stand up for the average voter against the oligarchs. Now that buffer is gone- the average GOP voter is getting raped by these forces and either doesn’t see it or if they do, are so into protecting little fetuses, marriage sanctity or whatever that they tolerate it.

The public ALWAYS “misinterprets” the statements of the Republican Party. Funny how that happens.
Dwendt44 July 15th, 2015 at 14:14
It’s not even original. Minnesota GOP feels the same way. Note the date.
