In the wake of the tragic terrorist murders at a historic black Charleston church, the South Carolina legislature finally moves to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the capitol, the U.S. House of Representatives has been taking measures of its own to restrict the use of the flag on federal property.

Some activists have decried the focus on the flag because it’s an easy way to ignore other issues surrounding the killings, but as it turns out, banning the flag isn’t such an easy lift, after all. Could someone explain to me why we should have the flag of traitorous secessionists who lost the Civil War flying ANYWHERE over federal properties?

Because it fits in well with Teabagger historical fantasies.

Yeah, I guess so. I mean really, was there supposed to be something glorious in their war? They tried to break the Union over their economy based on the slave trade, or “Atlantic Triangular Commerce” as the Texas social studies texts call it. Where else are failed revolutions so revered and bigoted revolutionaries so honored?

One of the amazing things about back then was the disparity of the economic situation. In the north there was a vibrant energy of small business and innovation and the opposite of such in the south because of their reliance on slave labor. It gave the north a bigger population and industrial base that allowed them the means to win the war. You might say that the north fought the war with one hand behind their back and after ”63” they brought out that hand and proceeded to end the war.

I’d say it was even more direct than that.
