Flag Comes Down Decades Too Late

The Confederate flag no longer flies over the South Carolina Capitol.

The Confederate flag was officially removed from a South Carolina Statehouse flagpole “with dignity and respect” Friday, in what governor Nicki Haley is calling “a new day” for South Carolina…

An 7-man honor guard led the six-minute ceremony, which kicked off just after 10 am in front of a large crowd that reportedly included Charleston’s mayor. Chanting “USA,” and “God Bless America,” the crowd applauded and cheered as the flag was ceremoniously folded and tied with a white string.

The flag will be relocated to a relic room, where citizens and racists alike can visit with it at their leisure.

Earlier:
Governor Nikki Haley has now signed into  law a bill that removes the Confederate flag from the State House grounds.

Before adding her signature to the legislation, Haley spoke of the black victims, who were killed by a white man after they welcomed him into a June 17 prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston.

Their act of love and faith, Haley said, set into motion a chain of events that led to the flag’s removal less than a month later.

She noted that when the confessed killer, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, was caught, relatives of the victims said in court that they forgave him. That act of forgiveness, Haley said, sparked a wave of compassion around the country that motivated people to change things. South Carolina’s legislature responded, she said, by voting overwhelmingly this week to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol grounds, an issue that the state has struggled with since the flag was first raised at the State House in 1962.

This is the same Tea Party-backed governor who had said it’s really no big deal, really that the state chooses to fly the disreputable sigil on gubmint property:

“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state,” the governor noted. “I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”

She had even defended the stars’n’bars during a gubernatorial debate:

Earlier:

Now both branches of the legislature have voted to remove the flag.

Early Thursday, the House of Representatives voted 94-20 to remove it, giving final approval to a bill that passed the Senate earlier in the week.

The vote count was more than the two-thirds needed — but it came after a handful of lawmakers mounted a tenacious last stand, proposing amendment after amendment that led the debate to drag on more than 12 hours.

The bill now goes to Gov. Nikki Haley, who has said she will sign it into law.

“Today, as the Senate did before them, the House of Representatives has served the State of South Carolina and her people with great dignity,” Haley said in a statement early Thursday.

This wouldn’t have happened without a passionate speech from Republican Jenny Horne, who is a descendant of Jefferson Davis:

Confederate flag. Love history. Civil War history is interesting.

    • Chinese Democracy July 10th, 2015 at 01:59

I love history too! The confederate battle flag of northern virginia has been used as a symbol of hatred and racism for many years. Its meaning has very little to do with the actual civil war.

glad its going .. gives the racist Limbaugh zombies something to whine about

      • TypeKing July 10th, 2015 at 03:35

Southern State still cling to that Confederate ideology. After so many years past bye. Some times I feel that even if Korean Unification happens northern part of Korea will have same situation as this.

When that lady rushed up and took down that racist as flag and that poor black guy who had to put it back up, i think he should be able to take it back down!

The KKK planned a rally around that flag .. now it wont be there . Im really upset for them

  6. CandideThirtythree July 10th, 2015 at 08:21

If Nikki Haley were any kind of a human being she would have taken it down before the funerals, she is a coward.

  7. Judgeforyourself37 July 10th, 2015 at 10:52

It is a sign that the south is still fighting the Civil War when it took a horrendous massacre of nine beautiful, innocent people to get SC to remove that rag from their state capitol building. Some people tried to get that obscene rag down in 2000, but there was not enough pressure to do so.
Haley maybe finally came to the realization that the Confederacy was defeated in the mid 1800s, but she only advocated for the flag’s removal under duress.
Do you know when that flag/rag made its, fairly recent, appearance over the Columbia building? In the 1960s to protest integration and the end of Jim Crow laws, although, some in the south still want that flag in state parks. Will this country ever grow up, or end racism? Sadly, probably not, and certainly not in my lifetime.

    • WXYZ July 10th, 2015 at 11:26

You are correct. It was raised in 1961 by a Democrat (John May) opposed to the civil rights movement and will be removed as of 10 July 2015 by signature of the Republican governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley.

      • Judgeforyourself37 July 10th, 2015 at 13:29

Haley certainly took her sweet time about agreeing to take down that flag. Had she not been pressured by Democrats and other thinking people that flag would still be there.
Again, I state, why did it take a needless tragedy to get that flag down. It never should have flown after the confederacy was defeated. The confederacy no longer exists and has not existed since the end of the Civil War and Lee surrendered.

        • WXYZ July 10th, 2015 at 13:44

Blame the Democratic party. They’re the ones that put it there. And they’ve had plenty of opportunities to take it down since then. And let me remind you that it is a Republican governor that takes it down, surely a disappointment to the Democratic party. I say again, I’m not opposed to the removal of a Democratic icon.

Do you have ANY idea what you are talking about?

            • whatthe46 July 10th, 2015 at 14:45

              nope!

            • WXYZ July 10th, 2015 at 14:47

Just stating facts. Sorry if it hurts.

              • OldLefty July 10th, 2015 at 14:49

I think you need to read up a bit.
Facts never hurt, I just don’t see them in your comments.

              • Talibandrew Breitbot July 11th, 2015 at 15:33

Misstating, cherry-picking, and spinning incomplete facts. Because that’s the way he rolls.

          • talibandan2010 July 10th, 2015 at 19:59

No. Blame one Dixiecrat, state Rep. John May, whose move to fly the flag was also backed by Republicans.

            • WXYZ July 11th, 2015 at 11:30

And since then, there have been six other Democrat governors of South Carolina (not including the one who was in office in 1961 who allowed it to be raised in the first place) but none saw fit to bring it down. Haley (a Republican I remind you) has made it happen. Sorry to rain facts on your parade.

              • Talibandrew Breitbot July 11th, 2015 at 15:33

“[N]one saw fit to bring it down”?

                No.

Some of them were conservative Dixiecrats (one even changed party to the GOP).

And it was not the Governor’s call – that is the job of the legislature, which has been dominated by racists since Reconstruction and still is.

Do you have any understanding of how the legislative process works? Probably not.

By the way, I think you would be much happier browsing stormfront.org

        Reality check…
Blame white male southern Christian conservatives who were against desegregation, (todays republican party)

      • talibandan2010 July 10th, 2015 at 19:10

Judgeforyourseld37 is indeed correct: It was raised in 1961 by a racist, ultraconservative “states’ rights” Dixiecrat – John May – who, like other Dixiecrats and Republicans of the era opposed the civil rights movement – and will be removed as of 10 July 2015 reluctantly and under pressure from Democrats by signature of the Republican governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, who had been a vocal supporter of the Dixie Swastika (http://www.c-span.org/video/?c4511678/nikki-haley-defending-confederate-flag).

        You’re welcome, WXYZ.

  8. labman57 July 10th, 2015 at 10:56

    Baby steps.

But the issue is not just in South Carolina. The entire Bible Belt — and their socially-regressive conservative politico backers — strive to rewrite American history so that the South is regarded as the maligned victim of Northern aggression in the years before, during, and after the Civil War, and slavery is merely a footnote.

Case in point — the concerted effort in Texas to transform public school textbooks into a medium for pro-Confederacy propaganda.
U.S. History, as taught in Texas public schools, will have as much authenticity as a comic book wherein the Confederate flag represents “truth, justice, and the American way”.

  9. WXYZ July 10th, 2015 at 11:09

Finally. At least one Democratic symbol removed. Raised by a Democrat; Removed by a Republican. Just like slavery. That’s progress!

Sorry. Didn’t see Redeye yesterday. I’m sure it disappoints you that I’m just stating facts. Again, I apologize that the truth hurts so much.

Let me clarify your post, WHYZ:

Finally. At least one racist symbol opposed by actual Democrats but worshipped half a centruy ago by conservative Dixiecrats, racist southern strategy Republicans, and their Confederacy-fetishizing fellow travelers removed. Raised by a conservative, racist Dixiecrat, a member of a minority within the Democratic party that mainstream memberss loathed in the 1950s and ’60s.
Removed under a Republican governor who was a strong supporter of the Slaver Flag of Treason. Just like progressive, anti-states-rights liberal Abraham Lincoln did withslavery. That’s progress!

  10. NW10 July 10th, 2015 at 11:28

Thank you to Governor Nikki Haley, Sens. Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, and Rep. Jenny Horne for making this possible. God bless them and God bless America!

60+ years later and Strom Thurmond still walks the halls…and the locals that were only wet spots in daddy’s pants never understood what he was all about…the only ugly from them is the reincarnation of Joe Mac Carthy in the form of Ted Cruz…both as ugly on the inside as the outside..

  16. Willys41 July 10th, 2015 at 21:28

Now let’s see how many days before the legislature passes a bill to put the flag up again.,

  17. CandideThirtythree July 11th, 2015 at 02:42

Of course she had to make a big show of it..the governor of Alabama had more class, he just sent someone out to take it down and never even mentioned it.

  18. WXYZ July 11th, 2015 at 12:13

Seems like you liberals are really disappointed that a Republican took down your flag. Sorry.

    • Talibandrew Breitbot July 11th, 2015 at 15:19

Lemme help you here, WXYZ. You should have written…

Seems like you liberals are notreally disappointed that a Republican, only after nine black people were were murdered by a terrorist inside a church and only after pressure from Democrats, took down what I pretend is “your” but is in fact a racist, states-rights, conservative-supported, hoisted by right-wing-Dixiecrats who jumped to the GOP flag. Sorry.

You clearly are confused about this issue. The man who you and others claim “put up” the flag 50 years ago was a state Dixiecrat legislator who was supported by GOPers and fellow Dixiecrats and shunned by the state’s actual Democrats.

      You’re welcome, WXYZ!

  19. Talibandrew Breitbot July 11th, 2015 at 15:23

Seems like you KKK-fluffing trolls are really disappointed that the Republicans were pressured into lowering their beloved Slaver Flag o’Treason and only after nine black people were were murdered by a terrorist inside a church. You are feeling the butthurt of losing a beachhead for your treasured Dixie Swastika, originally put up in a sneaky legislative move by an ultraconservative racist states-rights John Bircher Dixiecrat. Sorry! [Not.]
