Nine-Year-Old Girl Builds Shelters And Grows Food For The Homeless
Hailey Fort is a remarkable young girl.
At the age of 5, she saw homeless people near where she lived, and as it states on the GoFundMe page she set up:
Hailey started to help the homeless 4 years ago when she saw someone on the side of the street and asked her mother if there was anything she could do. They bought him lunch and from there Hailey has taken it upon herself to start a garden to donate vegetables and begin building mobile sleeping shelters for the homeless in Kitsap County.

I feel that’s the wrong approach her reward is her sacrifice and good deeds, why do we need awards for helping?

To encourage others, such as yourself, who are too slef-absorbed to either pitch in or find out about people in such desperate need in our country, but who resort to ugly stereotypes and feel the need to kick those who are down, after losing everything but what they can carry in a backpack.

I’m not? I lived in a downtown area and some of the houses around me were spots for the homeless, they’d walk around during the daytime looking for pot and booze, get drunk, go to the church or food spot and eat then come home and pass out.
I do agree with you there are people who’ve had a hard time finding work or things didn’t work out with their spouse and are financially in ruin or flat broke, that’s what family’s are for, they do have families they just have too much pride or ? So if you have families members in trouble do you help them…

Each case is different.
Get involved with a local church or charity organization that serves these people.
I smoke pot and recognize a fellow head and I just don’t see them among the many homeless people I encounter and know. For one thing, it’s expensive and these people have no money.
You have homeless people confused with people who have homes (which is why they have a home to go pass out in).
A high percentage are mentally ill and have no family to turn to.
Good grief, man, if you’re going to attack a group, make it those who are so reduced that they have all their worldly possessions in a backpack and who sleep on frozen ground in the winter.
These people get plenty enough of that as it is.
Get involved, my friend. Get involved, volunteer, open your heart and learn to love those for whom so many in society hold in disdain.
If you have faith, you will find it intensified to a degree that will shock you as you learn to stand up for the weak, defend the weak and love the unloved among us.

I give to a mentally ill man that walks up and down the highway every day, it’s his normal pattern, he doesn’t talk or say anything he just walks, his clothes sometimes look like shreds, I can’t believe how strong he is though, he walks 20 miles in the worst heat, it’s 100 degrees nearly every day with horrible humidity. I like pot it has many healing properties.

Beautiful story.
This child is learning valuable lessons and one hopes she inspires others to help out.
It’s fine to contribute, but much better to actually pitch in and get out there on the tip of the tip of the spear where need is.
There are other positive stories like this out there and one hopes the bloggers here will post more.
Back when I was a kid, one could get a carnival kit from McDonald’s and throw a carnival to benefit charity. I can’t recall whether one could choose the charity or whether it all went to one, but every summer there were carnivals all over the place to rise money for charity.

But what’s it like having homeless people living near you in homes, they still need money, they won’t work so that means stealing or hanging on your street corners, you know the beging signs, pot and diapers.

mcalleyboy, if you are ever in the Fredericksburg, Va. area, I’d be glad to take you to the homeless shelter to pitch in and meet not only those serving the homeless here, but the homeless people they serve.
Too bad you weren’t here last winter when it kept snowing, the homeless shelter was packed, the emergency cold weather shelter was packed and churches were opening their doors to take these people in.
In time you will come to understand that kicking someone who is so down they have lost everything but what they can carry in a backpack is a pretty crappy thing to do.
When you see people not giving lip service to, but who actually practice their faith and love as they have been commanded and give as they have been commanded, you’ll find yourself intimidated and ashamed to think this way.

Am I correct, you’ve never opened that wallet have you it’s all about volunteering, please, these churches and the city will find a spot for these homeless, building unapproved shelters and setting a bandaid on a problem does make light of it and good but the city needs to take care of it’s homeless people and they do, I know every city takes care of the homeless they even put them in homes donated to the city, these homes are all over the city, come on, they get drunk they wander around they pass out, thats the reality.
Liberals need to feel good about their volunteer efforts and its shows by highlighting stories, it’s best to keep it secret it would mean more. Another issue is your helping the wrong people, if you want to help someone, help those struggling with kids and still working on a minimum wage salary.

I was directly involved in the struggle to establish the Thomas Brisben shelter here. We were having people die from exposure – Thomas Brisben was one of them. The city was NOT taking care of them and even after citizen pressure got the shelter established, the city fought it by dragging its heels in various ways.
Even now, the city is unable to take care of all of them nor are the churches and others meeting all the needs of these unfortunate people.
Yes, we have had a couple Habitat for Humanity houses built here and one of the local charity groups tries to house them, but if you’ll take me up on my invitation and take time to see what is really going on, you’ll see how silly your guesses are about the situation.

If the location and activities of the shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries and others remain secret, no one will know where to volunteer and no one will know where to get help.
As far as I am concerned, those helping the poor and homeless do not get enough publicity. Their efforts need to be made known because what they do not only helps those in need, but they make us better overall as a society.
If you were to take me up on my invitation, you’d discover that it is not just liberals involved. There are people across the political spectrum pitching in and helping out. They differ on many things, but most of them help out because their faith commands them to do so and they respond beautifully.

Good on you for helping those who are getting exposed, seem strange that in a large city such as VA that this hasn’t already been addressed. I’m from Fargo, ND and they have homes, shelters such as the Salvation Army they really help but now because their views on gays they are getting put down, I tell the gay just keep that information to yourself and don’t share that with the Salvation Army, it’s a private matter anyway but apparently the gay and Liberals want to change this issue also by not giving money to the Salvation Army, no money in the kettle, thats very sad and wrong and it hurts those that are in need. The Fargo city has homeless shelters also. So how is it that a small city in ND can take care of it’s own and a large spot such as VA can’t? seems strange at best, especially for the very Liberal West and East coasts, what else is going on here.
I had to call the police once in the dead of winter, some guy was passed out by the door entrance at 2am in morning, the door is locked but he was drunk.

Within about a 15-20-mile range of where I type are about 250,000 people. Unemployment is about 5%, it is one of the fastest growing parts of the country and incomes are well above the national average.
We have many organizations who are trying, but the job is not getting done.
Extraordinary people are doing amazing things daily to help, but there are still many who get too little aid.
Not many people around here realize it, but we have groups of dozens of people camped out in the woods. That’s where they live.
According to this NPR report, Fargo is not keeping up with demand and is not housing all the homeless there:

According to the city website, in 2012 there were 446 homeless people in Fargo, now they say “approximately 760 people” and other articles I googled up listed well over 800.

And so now we build shacks for the homeless and they steal around the neighborhood? They have places to go and spots to live, why keep them in your neighborhoods, silly.
