Mississippi Clerk Resigns Rather Than Issue Gay Marriage Licenses

Linda Barnette issued marriage licences for 24 years, but being required to issue them to gays is too much for her.

“I choose to obey God rather than man,” Mrs. Barnette wrote in her one paragraph resignation letter to the Grenada County Board of Supervisors.

“I am a follower of Christ and I believe strongly that the Bible is my final authority,” she wrote. ‘The Bible teaches that a marriage is to be between a man and a woman. Therefore, because of the recent ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court, I can no longer fulfill my duties as Circuit Clerk and issue marriage licenses to same sex couples…

“I told my supervisors a while back if it happened, I would tender my resignation,” she told me. “I had already decided in my heart that I could not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. It’s my Christian belief. As a follower of Christ, I could not do it. The bible teaches it is contrary to His plan.”

    adios idiot savant.

  2. Mike July 1st, 2015 at 14:16

I actually respect her decision, well done. I might disagree with her reasoning, but I applaud her decision to abide by the law and resign.
Ms Barnette, you are a rare thing in this world, a principled individual willing to pay the price and take some personal responsibility for your actions. (no matter how wrongheaded I believe your thinking to be)

    • anothertoothpick July 1st, 2015 at 14:40

Maybe she planned ahead and applied to be a church lady.

That’s what I would have done.

      • Mike July 1st, 2015 at 16:27

Whatever she does, I wish her the best. There will be a load of support for her from fellow christians.

        • Judgeforyourself37 July 2nd, 2015 at 14:33

Wrong, many of those of us who are Christian applaud the SCOTUS ruling. My church, the UCC, performs same gender weddings, and welcomes all persons who love their neighbor as themselves and love God, into their fold.

          • Mike July 2nd, 2015 at 14:55

            Fair enough.
We need a word to differentiate rabid right wing politicized christians from Real Christians. Kinda like ammosexual vs gun owner…

    • Chris July 1st, 2015 at 20:02

I can’t help suspecting she’s planned to retire and sees this as a great opportunity to make a grand exit.

      • Mike July 1st, 2015 at 20:15

The cynic in me agrees with you.

  3. NW10 July 1st, 2015 at 14:17

It’s my Christian belief. As a follower of Christ, I could not do it. The bible teaches it is contrary to His plan.”

Wrong. Jesus was all about love and tolerance. Good riddance!

    • MarcoZandrini July 1st, 2015 at 16:47

And his plan is for you to go away! Like forever!

  4. labman57 July 1st, 2015 at 14:19

Don’t let the clerk office door hit your ass …

  5. Larry Schmitt July 1st, 2015 at 14:21

Maybe she can get a job at Hobby Lobby, at close to minimum wage. With no benefits.

    • Judgeforyourself37 July 2nd, 2015 at 14:31

At her apparent age, she will not need an IUD.

  6. Suzanne McFly July 1st, 2015 at 14:26

“I choose to obey God rather than man,” ………….ummm, sorry sweetie, but the Bible was written by men who claimed they are writing the word or God.

    • anothertoothpick July 1st, 2015 at 14:38

      God people are so crazy.

      • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker July 1st, 2015 at 15:21

        Excellent double entendre!!
I’ve heard it a thousand times…God, people are crazy.
        But you nailed it correctly.

    • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker July 1st, 2015 at 14:46

      ^ This X2 ^
And I bet she eats that abomination shellfish and wears polyester blends.

      • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 14:50

Yea but she likes to eat shellfish and wear polyester blends, so apparently God was only joking about those two rules.

      • Dwendt44 July 1st, 2015 at 14:59

I notice she does here hair up and wears jewelry as well. She definitely going to burn in hell for that.

        • The Original Just Me July 3rd, 2015 at 01:24

I definitely agree. All long hair should be down, long, shiny, and healthy. Okay long hair is beautiful and I’m an addict. Oh, and most jewelry leaves scratches.

      • whatthe46 July 2nd, 2015 at 01:56

        and then some.

    • CandideThirtythree July 2nd, 2015 at 11:15

The bible also says to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and back when it was written, Caesar was the government. So she is working for the government, she should following the law and doing what she is told… but quitting is good too.

      • Suzanne McFly July 2nd, 2015 at 13:20

Yeah, we need someone who isn’t an old judgemental crustacean in her position.

  7. anothertoothpick July 1st, 2015 at 14:37

She should bring her bible with her to the employment office.

And pray the bill colectors away.

    • whatthe46 July 2nd, 2015 at 01:55

i bet Obamacare is looking pretty good in her future.

  8. anothertoothpick July 1st, 2015 at 14:44

    Is that you aunt Bee?

Remember the episode when aunt Bee mistakenly drank moonshine?

Tooooo tooooo tootsie goodbye….tooooo toooo tootsie don’t cry.

    • Larry Schmitt July 1st, 2015 at 14:48

I think even Barney got drunk in that one.

  9. F_cons July 1st, 2015 at 14:46

Great news, conservacunt removes its hateful ass from the system. It would be a better sign if you self immolated so we all could watch your shit-hate burn

    • Robert M. Snyder July 1st, 2015 at 18:44

“conservacunt”? Really? How about showing a little more respect for women.

      • whatthe46 July 2nd, 2015 at 01:54

i am not in agreement with all he said, but, how about she show a little respect for human kind. there are women who want to marry each other, why didn’t she show some respect for them. i think they all think too much about males having sex quite frankly.

        • Robert M. Snyder July 2nd, 2015 at 02:17

Just five years ago, in 2010, Obama was still saying marriage is between a man and a woman. To paint this woman as some kind of bigot is hypocritical in the extreme.

And since you brought it up, a lot of people think that anal sex is disgusting. There’s nothing homophobic about that. Germophobic perhaps. But not homophobic, because the vast majority of anal sex is probably male on female.

          • fahvel July 2nd, 2015 at 03:15

being an ahole, you should know.

          • tracey marie July 2nd, 2015 at 07:32

            stop deflecting

          • whatthe46 July 2nd, 2015 at 08:55

so, you’ve never changed your mind about anything? gotcha.

          • William July 2nd, 2015 at 09:14

Ok, I reread this thread, and cannot find where it turned the corner to “anal sex”
Are you on the right thread? We were talking about a woman who quit her job because she didn’t want to issue marriage licenses to gay people.

          • Dwendt44 July 2nd, 2015 at 20:06

Perhaps, but President Obama wasn’t forcing others to abide by his views, nor was he discriminating against them.

            • Robert M. Snyder July 2nd, 2015 at 21:26

The woman quit her job. She’s in no position to force others to abide by her will.

    • Judgeforyourself37 July 2nd, 2015 at 14:27

There is no need to resort to obscenities. I agree that she should have resigned, she had no business judging others, but she is still a human being. Name calling and obscene verbiage only shows ignorance. You can disagree with her thinking sans being disagreeable

  10. Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 14:52

Gee. I’m just so heartbroken ‘n all. Now if only we can get the rest of the clowns to “follow Christ” and fade away.

  11. Budda July 1st, 2015 at 15:26

Your bible is not the ‘final’ word in your job as clerk…the ‘mans’ law is. Bye bye.

  12. Anomaly 100 July 1st, 2015 at 15:31

Todd Starnes (from the link) ends his post with, “Make no mistake. America is about to undergo a religious purging in the public marketplace – at the hands of secular jihadists.”

    Allahu Akbar!

  13. rg9rts July 1st, 2015 at 15:42

    Good riddance

  14. bpollen July 1st, 2015 at 15:50

I don’t agree with her stance, but she did the right thing by resigning. If your religion precludes you from doing your job, you shouldn’t have the job.

  15. Um Cara July 1st, 2015 at 15:53

That’s how it’s done. None of this ‘I want to keep my job where I’m supposed to provide a critical service to the public, but I want to be able to refuse service to some of the public based on my religious beliefs.’

If your religious beliefs really do disqualify you from performing your duties, no problem, just quit.

    • Judgeforyourself37 July 2nd, 2015 at 14:23

The same should apply to pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for Plan B or contraception. They are there to fill prescriptions, not judge.

  16. jasperjava July 1st, 2015 at 15:56

“The Bible teaches that a marriage is to be between a man and a woman.”

No, it doesn’t. Many of the Bible’s greatest “heroes” had multiple wives and concubines.

    • fahvel July 2nd, 2015 at 03:14

and pregnant mary’s folks had to find an old dude to marry her so that the kid would be legit and, waddaya know, the little dood turned out to be god.

      • tracey marie July 2nd, 2015 at 07:31

        that was soooo funny!!!

    • CandideThirtythree July 2nd, 2015 at 11:08

They never read it, they just gossip about what they think it says. Every study ever done proves that Atheists know more about religion than the religious do.

  17. Hirightnow July 1st, 2015 at 16:00

Who called the press conference for this? Clerks don’t usually get a press conference when they quit for any other reasos.
    just sayin’.

  18. Chris July 1st, 2015 at 19:59

Yet another one ignorant of the Bible invokes it.

I suspect others in her office probably welcome her leaving. Let someone younger without prejudice take her job.

  19. dave-dr-gonzo July 1st, 2015 at 20:28

Don’t let the door hitcha where Beelzebub splitcha…

Mississippi, with its republican governor and republican legislature, leads the nation in poverty, illiteracy, teen pregnancy and other social woes. yet it cannot seem to connect the dots ………
