Is The Klan Burning Churches Again?
[Glover Grove Baptist Church] is one of at least six black church fires in the South, all of which have taken place in the week-and-a-half since nine people were killed in Emanuel AME Church.
Fires in Charlotte, N.C., and Knoxville, Tenn., are both being investigated as arson. Authorities in Macon, Ga., are investigating another there as “suspicious.” A fire at a Tallahassee, Fla., church was likely caused by electrical problems, authorities have said. Another in Gibson County, Tenn., may have been caused by lightning. One burning in Charlotte is being investigated to determine if it could have been a hate crime.
And last night, a landmark AME church in South Carolina that had been rebuilt after being set afire by the Ku Klux Klan two decades ago was destroyed in a fire:
A historic South Carolina black church was gutted by a fire Tuesday night, just hours after the NAACP warned pastors nationwide to be vigilant following a series of blazes at Southern black churches.
Flames engulfed the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greeleyville, about 60 north of Charleston, as it burned for nearly three hours.
“It’s gone,” State Rep. Cezar McKnight (D-Kingstree) told the Post and Courier.”They don’t know the cause yet, but I am hoping for the best.”
Mount Zion AME is now the seventh black church in the South to be burned in the past two weeks. It was previously burned to the ground almost exactly 20 years ago by the Ku Klux Klan.
Tuesday’s fire started around 8:30 p.m. and was under control by 11, officials said. Photos showed the church completely consumed by fire, with its roof destroyed and its towering white spire vanished into the flames.
The troublesome truth is that a pattern had already been discerned by law enforcement authorities, and yet a church that had once been a target of the Klan has again been destroyed.
Just don’t call it a wave of racist terrorism targeting a religious and ethnic group – I mean, seven torched black churches must be some kind of coincidence, and such speculation would be way too premature, right?

I just love sensationalism, it’s totally logical. BTW the latest fire cited in this article was deemed NOT arson by investigators (no need to print that, it wouldn’t help sensationalism!). None the less, I think we should bring in the National Guard, Homeland Security, TSA, NSA, FBI, CIA, and a couple midgets to find these people and scour the earth with their remains!

We are blessed to have insta-coverage of all incidents with the 24-hour news cycle, and, in this case, it’s rightly being blasted everywhere and it should be. Looking at your profile picture, I’m guessing you’re too young to have witnessed the racist horrorshow that was the 1960s in America. People died horrible deaths at the hands of southern racists aka the KKK and most white people still angry their side didn’t win the ‘War of Northern Aggression’ as they call The Civil War. Many of us marched and worked very hard to see laws changed and civil rights protections put in place. In my lifetime, black people weren’t allowed to vote. They weren’t allowed to marry white people. Black children died in a church fire.
Church fires are the signature of the KKK. This cannot be ignored. it feels like 1960 again, and a lot of us are legitimately sad and angry about this. Please watch and learn.

Annie, thank you for your reply. I respect what the generation before us did. But you did not understand my comment at all. We have merely jumped to conclusions and allowed the story of those who died to be stolen, and given the racists the spotlight instead. Your rant went rather off the deep end I understand it wasn’t pointed at me, you have some things to get off your chest.
Morgan Freeman had a very intelligent thing to say about getting rid of racism the underlying context of which I will now explain: We gave very little media attention outside of Obama speaking at the funeral service to 1) the people who lost their lives, and 2) the reaction that the actual people of Charleston gave of praying and weeping together, all races. Instead of the media spreading the message of hope and feeding into the minds of impressionable young people how we should be reacting in this time of violent idiotic racism, we gave nearly all the media attention to one young insane racist, a flag, and the KKK. We forgot the people who died, and replaced them with sensational media. I’m sorry but if I was from your generation, this would infuriate me. The young people in the South, SC especially, hate this type of sensational media. We have worked so hard to pick up the yoke of your generation and take beating racism to the next level.
Your generation laid some very solid foundations with us. Instead of seeing white people and black people, we see our friends and our co-workers. Instead of seeing black crime and white crime, we see just crime. This is why the city of Charleston did not riot as some other cities did, we do not see crime as divided by color. We have progressed much further than you give us credit for, and we are sick of seeing the media ignorantly give the small minority of idiots a podium to preach their racist agenda.
I never said we should sweep it under the rug. What I was saying is, let’s stop letting sensational media carry the racist message out for more idiots to get fired up about it. Instead, let’s talk about how the people of Charleston properly came together and showed how the lines of race have been blurred, how we can stand together against racism and violence, and how Charleston especially has become a melting pot and example for other cities like Ferguson and Baltimore.
Trust me, my generation has worked very hard at extinguishing racism as well; and we are just pissed to see the damn racists get all the attention.

Thanks for a well thought-out and well written response. Your initial comments focused on sensationalism, and that bothered me. It bothered me because I don’t see it as sensationalism if media shows and reports on what’s actually happening. This is a huge story that cannot be allowed to die. I won’t let it die if I can help it. I’ve been blogging about it all week.
I think I should clarify that I do not get my news from the television. I get it online from sources I myself have found to speak the truth as I believe it to be. I am also a talk radio junkie, and, because the big media operations have shut down all the progressive radio stations save only a handful, I listen online. I happen to be a bleeding heart liberal in the old style; to the left of Al Sharpton. That said, I wish no media would give any attention to these sick slaughterers of good people. I would rather see coverage of the rest of the story. Online progressive media does exactly that. So, I listen and read.
I believe my eyes and ears are still good enough to help me discern the difference between truth and untruth. I have nothing but compassion for you atypical Southern white people. I have friends there, On IOP, who also don’t fit the profile. Sadly, I feel we have let your generation (and ours) down, because when the dust died down and legislation in place, we thought we’d won the war. I’m appalled to see it never really died. It just went underground, and we let our guard down. Shame on us.
We all have some very hard and important work to do. My back is a mess, the result of much fun and active subversiveness in my youth, but I can still march and protest almost as well as I did back then. And I can write.
I am doing my best to work on this with inspiration and love rather then with anger and negativity. I would urge you and yours to do the same. It’s right to get angry and disgusted. It’s how you respond to the shitstorm the big bullies dredge up that matters. Carrying anger around in your gut will kill you after it turns you into a hateful and miserable person. Keep your head up and your eyes and ears open. Respond with nonviolence and inspiration. And always know you’re doing the right thing.

Authorities in Tallahassee said that an electrical fire was a “likely” cause. Given longstanding reports of racism within the Tallahassee law enforcement community, it would be irresponsible NOT to take this “cause’ of the fire with a grain of salt.

When 7 black churches burn down within 2 weeks of a deadly attack on a black church it’s called common sense to investigate those fires, not sensationalism. Arson investigations can take months to complete, they require massive amounts of lab work and analysis…You should be intelligent enough to realize that preliminary reports are almost always wrong.
It might be more prudent to wait til the investigations are completed before announcing the findings.

Thank you for making my point for me. Instead of hearing about a church fire and immediately assuming it was the KKK (not saying it wasn’t, or some other racist idiots) and assuming the whole South is behind this, maybe let’s allow the FBI/local police/etc do their job and tell us the real cause of the fires, then we can make an intelligent instead of sensational debate about what’s going on. Instead, we are just giving stupid racists glory in what they did and credit for what the probably didn’t do.
We have allowed this type of sensational media to cloud what really happened, 9 innocent loving people died and the people of Charleston came together to pray and weep with them and their families by the tens of thousands each day. The entire state has done so, with the exception of a small handful of racist idiots who get to steal the entire media’s attention. This is hardly fair to the people who actually lost a loved one a few weeks ago. I guess the flag debacle really stole it first, to allow the politicians to score points. You as a “man of color” should especially understand this.
BTW, as a country that is trying get rid of racism how is pointing out the fact that you are a man of color helping anything. You are more right than me simply because you are a different color?
