Gary Hart: If I’d Won, No Bushes
I asked former Colorado Senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart how the world would be different had he made it to the presidency in 1988.
In his book The Republic of Conscience Hart talks about how the Founding Fathers would disapprove how vulnerable American politics has become to corruption.
We discussed how candidates are now fighting for billions of dollars and the support of corporations, why it’s too early to call who is going to win the Republican and Democratic nominations for President, and if he has any regrets about not winning the Democratic nod for President in 1984 and 1988. We also touched upon the recent Supreme Court rulings and the battle against ISIS.

One of my recurring time-travel fantasies involves going back to 1986 and warning Gary Hart that if he sees a boat called “Monkey Business” and meets a woman called Donna Rice, he should walk away as fast as he can.
If Hart had been elected President in 1988, there would have been no Bush Sr., and therefore no Dubya. There is no way that George W. B*$h would have been “elected” president if his father hadn’t been president.
Thousands of people died, just because Gary Hart was stupid enough to let an attractive blonde sit on his knee.

Agreed, but I think she sat on more than his knee.

True, but it was that picture that killed him. The rest might have gone under “plausible deniability”.

And if I had a billion dollars, I wouldn’t have to work. You didn’t win, and I’m not rich.

If I had a billion dollars I would buy Rum Island because it is filled with ponies.

And this guy didn’t help either by loosing to HW.

He really had no idea how ridiculous he looked. Where were his staff?
anothertoothpick July 1st, 2015 at 13:25
Don’t you think it was right wing mania that beat him?
The ridiculous picture was just an excuse for his loss. But it certainly did not help.
Larry Schmitt July 1st, 2015 at 13:30
That’s all I meant. He didn’t lose because of the picture, but it didn’t gain him any votes.

His mistake was being on the democratic ticket when his scandal broke. If he were a republican, he would’ve simply said, “Jesus forgives me” and he would’ve been in good standing with the GOP again.
.
Take, for example, the miserable puke David “diaperman” Vitter. When the story broke of his kinky sexual escapades, he merely told his constituents that he was sorry (that he got caught, I’m sure), that his wife forgives him and Jesus forgives him and everything was A-Okay with the flakes that are his constituents. He’s going on to get reelected in Louisiana.
