Girl Scouts Returns Money To Donor Who Demanded It “Not Be Used To Support Transgender Girls’

Good for the Girl Scouts!

Girl Scouts of Western Washington CEO Megan Ferland said that she decided to return a $100,000 donation after the donor wanted a guarantee that the money would not help transgender girls.

In an interview with Seattle Met, Ferland explained that her organization was thrilled when it received the gift representing a quarter of its annual fundraising because it could cover the cost of sending 500 girls to camp.

But after Caitlyn Jenner announced her transition to a woman in May, Ferland said that the donor sent her a distressing request.

“Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t, please return the money,” the donor wrote.

Ferland recalled that the letter made her “very sad,” but she quickly made up her mind that the money had to be returned.

“Girl Scouts is for every girl,” she insisted. “And every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.”

Self respect is expensive sometimes….but usually well worth the cost.

I will send $100, who will match it?

    • F_cons June 30th, 2015 at 15:13

I can’t match that, I was outsourced more than 2 years ago but I’ll do what I can

      • tracey marie June 30th, 2015 at 15:20

        $5 is perfect!

        • F_cons June 30th, 2015 at 15:22

If only I was old enough to get any benefit of the thousands I paid into all my working life

It is hard to get laid off/down sized because of greed.

Yes and my skills are now replaced by people from India, 2 for my price, no one will pay for someone to educate me in new skills, even if that were possible, who would hire someone pushing 60

That is very hard, I left corporate buiness in 2006 and became a loan officer, independent. I love it, I work when I want and hand pick my clients. I was tired of traveling, meetings and just the entire stifling atmosphere.

                • F_cons June 30th, 2015 at 18:16

                  I’m very happy for you!

I love it, I can broke but do not want the headaches.

Thanks for the first smile I’ve had for a long time. My cheeks hurt now!

what would be nice is a gofundme for this. why, because the girl scouts would likely raise more than that 100k in a couple of days w/o restrictions and in his damn face.

I just clicked them a bunch of Bing points, does that help?

      • tracey marie June 30th, 2015 at 15:39

        What are bing points?

        • Warman1138 June 30th, 2015 at 15:57

Bing points are rewarded for using Bing search engine ( I think that’s what it’s called ) 100 points equal one dollar, so I clicked them and the Boy Scouts 1700 points.

        • Roctuna June 30th, 2015 at 18:52

My first thought was WTF are bing points? You have better manners than me.

          • tracey marie June 30th, 2015 at 19:27

II had to look it up, you get points from businesses and redeem them for gifts on bing.. I have been called many things, but well mannered on line….

    • Roctuna June 30th, 2015 at 15:39

The Seattle story linked to this site https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/girl-scouts-is-foreverygirl#/story for fundraising but it doesn’t look like it’s specifically replacing the lost $100k.

      • tracey marie June 30th, 2015 at 15:46

Thank you, this makes my pledge easy to send.

  3. Warman1138 June 30th, 2015 at 16:05

Oops there went another 1000 Bing points to the Boy and Girl Scouts.

    • Hirightnow June 30th, 2015 at 16:44

They’re the future of America….just not the future that some people would prefer.

      • rg9rts July 1st, 2015 at 03:40

        Barefoot and pregnant as adults

    • Dwendt44 June 30th, 2015 at 17:01

Thumbs up for the Girl Scouts. The Boy Scouts still have a ways to go.
The GS haven’t had a ‘no way’ policy in regards to gays or the none religious.
The BS are coming along, but aren’t there yet.

  4. Talkin_Truth June 30th, 2015 at 22:37

This makes me respect the Girl Scouts, even more. And I already had high respect for them.

  5. rg9rts July 1st, 2015 at 03:39

I guess some girls are more girls than others in the donors eyes…

  6. TuMadre, Ph.D July 1st, 2015 at 09:28

The donor has the right to put conditions on how the money is spent, and the girl scouts have the right to refuse to take money with hooks on it.

    This isn’t news.

    • Dwendt44 July 1st, 2015 at 12:07

Except he added the conditions AFTER he donated the money.

      • TuMadre, Ph.D July 1st, 2015 at 22:04

And they returned the money. Not seeing the issue.

    • Chris July 2nd, 2015 at 07:45

Uh, yes it is. It gives us hope that some people stand for principle, not just money.

I enjoy reading inspiring posts like this, so to me it’s news. Why it isn’t to you, only you can say. But it’s much more informative about how some people stand for what is right than another release about Trump’s latest shot in the foot.
