SCOTUS: States Can’t Ask For Proof Of Citizenship During Voter Registration

Posted by | June 29, 2015 11:30 | Filed under: Good News Politics

The Supreme Court says states don’t have the right to ask those registering to vote for proof of citizenship.

The rebuff is a victory for the Obama administration and voting- and minority-rights groups that battled the two states in court. It leaves intact a decision by a U.S. agency that blocked the states from requiring proof of citizenship for voters in federal elections.

It’s the second high court defeat on the issue for Arizona. The state has a law that requires evidence of citizenship, but the Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that it couldn’t be enforced when people use a standard registration document known as the “federal form” to register to vote for Congress and the president.

Wow, I am elated. When I register voters I have to swear that the people I register are who they say they are, are citizens and are legal voters in every way. I have to have an ID. I upload the info, send the paperwork to the election offices and they are cked again. The right is having a bad bad start of a new week. All their hateful, unnecessary and mean spitited laws are being repealed and denied.

Indeed, seems we have turned the corner away from hate and insanity. We paid a high price, I do believe the 9 deaths woke up people to how horrendous hate and the vile paranoid delusions of the right have become. They over played their hand and the liuttle scum did as well.

This sure seems like a precedent that could be extended to voter ID laws. If it’s a federal election and the feds don’t require ID, then the states shouldn’t be allowed to require one.

It is coming, the repeal of all the voter repression laws. Just wait till the left wins back the Senate, retains the WH and gains a few seats in the house….teabaggers have lost their grip and are being rejected.

Did you read how Montgomery county, the most conservative county in Texas has opened the court and offices earlier today because they received all their new licenses and have reprogramed their computers. The judges are looking forward to performing marriages and the clerks are calling people back personally so they may come and get their marriage license.

I can’t help remembering how the lawmakers in AZ and KS are always talking about “federal overreach” while they’re constantly trying to usurp federal jurisdiction. One would think these lawmakers would know that immigration and citizenship are federal matters. They all need to take a refresher course in political science.
