North Carolina Relaxes Voter ID Law

North Carolina’s Voter Identification Verification Act (VIVA) was one of the most restrictive voting laws in the nation.  And now,

Just last Thursday, days before a critical hearing in the case, the General Assembly amended VIVA to effectively remove the challenged photo ID requirement. In other words, under the law as now amended, voters without the requisite ID will be able to essentially do what all voters have done in the past by simply signing an affidavit stating that they have a “reasonable impediment” to obtaining a photo ID. . .

The General Assembly’s about-face arose in the context of an extraordinary amount of evidence concerning VIVA’s constitutional infirmities. Witnesses from all over the state testified about the difficulties encountered in trying to obtain IDs from the Department of Motor Vehicles in whose hands the primary mechanisms for voting – one of our paramount rights – had unwisely been placed by the General Assembly.

I was lucky enough to be involved with the effort to overturn VIVA and am thrilled to see the restriction on voting turned back.

    I’m sure they’ll remedy that correction before the 16 election

      I smell a lot of sarcasm in that statement. I hope this problem is remedied by the next election, but the wheels of “justice” are slow.

                      I poke every once an awhile, but sometimes I feel filthy after. I don’t make it daily ritual, they are not worth feeling bad for, but sometimes it just feels good to throw a few jabs.

                      I put a rainbow on my FB avatar pic. I have seen a few comments about a couple who do not support the decision, but nothing outright rude. I try not to put anything political on my FB page out of respect. I have Republican friends and family members and that is not a political space for me, it is a space I use to chat with friends and family. I will show my support for certain issues in ways that I don’t believe are offensive. I am sure you had fun after that great ruling. the nuts were out that night I am sure.

                      No you’re doing the right thing by keeping it non political. That’s what everyone likes about Marlies we talk about everything BUT politics we need down time from it. I don’t know what time zone you’re in but I’m in Las Vegas but I’m up in the wee hours and so is rg and 1 in Texas and another in England and Macedonia. Others come online later 1 from Brazil and others scattered around the country. Drop in anytime and lurk awhile.
                      We had a blast during the Men’s World Cup (and talking about the teams and players at the same time and of course eating) and quite a few this year are watching the Women’s Cup. Drop in and check out the cooking tab and all of the other tabs on offer anytime you feel a need to break away from politics for awhile.

                      Lots and lots of lol! It’s too easy for me to become condescending with most of them but I did have a good discussion with 1 that went on for quite a while.
                      It must have been funny with them trying to flag you and discussing it with you there! ;o)) Some I flagged and just kept it moving.
