Martin O’Malley Completely Whiffs On Racism And Charleston Shooting
The racist terror attack on the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina has revived debates over gun control and the Confederate flag, but has also intensified the roiling issue of racism that has been building since the unrest in Ferguson, and the near-weekly incidents that have followed it. That “whiff” is the usual political/media BS mingled with the decaying bodies of the innocents.
The simple fact is individual “racism” is not a political issue, unless you are referring to this insidious institutional racism still on the books, i.e. New Jim Crow. Exactly how those destructive laws figure into the recent AME church massacre I’m not sure. However, I would not be surprised to learn they, along with negligent parents, played a major role in “radicalizing” a young Roof.
While we will never end racism with legislation, that does not mean we are powerless against it. I believe individual racism is a mental illness and it needs to be detected through regular mental health screenings of school age children. Like gun control this needs to be considered a “Public Health Emergency” just as if Ebola were to breakout in New Jersey. It must be near the top of any serious Presidential candidate’s list of priorities, as far as I’m concerned.
Of course it also takes a Congress… and therein is the rub.
