Jesse Jackson Reacts: America ‘The Most Violent Nation On Earth’

Posted by | June 19, 2015 10:00 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories

Jesse Jackson spoke with me on radio Thursday night about the tragedy in Charleston. Jackson described the murders as a “horrific, beastly act,” which took place in a setting that should be used as a sanctuary. He added that it was proof that the United States is the “most violent nation on earth,” that there is still “a toxic undercurrent” even though some progress has been made on race relations, and the suspect, Dylann Storm Roof, was “not born hateful. Somebody taught him ignorance.”

Jackson also commented on Rachel Dorezal, saying that race is more than just a social construct.

Dominican Republic to be ‘Socially Cleaned’ in two days

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/06/14/1393198/-Dominican-Republic-to-be-Socially-Cleaned-in-two-days

In two days about a quarter of a million people will be made stateless.

They will have no homes, no passports, and no civil rights.

There are several reasons for this, but the primary reason is racism.

As a recent Peace Corps volunteer in the DR, stationed near the border
of Haiti, I have a very personal perspective on this issue.

This may be hard to believe for most Americans, but racism in the DR is much
worse than racism here in the United States. The idea of being black in
the DR is wrapped up with being Haitian, and then takes on a xenophobic
    quality.

The thing is, 90% of Dominicans would be considered ‘black’ by
American standards. So there is a huge difference between being
considered moreno (brown) and negro (black). The Policia Nacional
Dominicana are so underpaid and openly corrupt that being mistaken for
being Haitian means having to bribe officers (which I’ve personally
witnessed) or be arrested and possibly beaten. Being mistaken for being
Haitian means being denied job opportunities, public education, bank
    accounts, and health care.

In other words, being black in the DR means being a second-class
citizen with no legal protections. And now it means being stateless.

    • tracey marie June 19th, 2015 at 16:34

shut the hell up, they are all black people and they are refuges from Haiti, damn how easily you lie and put things out of context so you may bash and American who is black.

      • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 16:45

You shut the hell up Tracey Marie. If Haitians were Nordics, the Dominicans would welcome them with open arms, but because the Haitians are black,
they are being kicked out of DR in mass right now.
Even Haitians born in DR, living for decades in DR, are being thrown out,
they cannot prove that they are Dominicans because DR refuses to issue a birth certificate to Haitians born in DR.
You shut the F**k up, stick it where the sun don’t shine.

You want to be in denial, be my guest.

Racism is alive and well the world over. From African migrants drowning at sea, by the thousands, to South African burning alive, hacking to death Africans from Nigeria, Zimbabwe or any other neighboring country.

        You can drop dead Tracey!

        • madjayhawk June 19th, 2015 at 19:30

Racism doesn’t have to involve whites and blacks. There are differences between peoples other than skin color. A tribe in Rwanda killed millions of their fellow countrymen just because they were different from themselves. One of the worst cases of genocide in history. Our country and the rest of the world did absolutely nothing about it.

The Holocaust was white Europeans killing other white Europeans that were different from themselves. If the Nazis weren’t racists I don’t know who are.

The Democrats seem to believe the only racists in the world and history are Republicans. At least that is what they seem to want you to believe. They are really really ignorant.

          • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 23:05

You are absolutely right, racism does not have to involve skin color. It can involve religious, social class, identical skin color but different ethnic backgrounds.

And you are a POS, ostrich head stuck in the sand, 3 blind mice,
denier. Haitians are being kicked out of DR, right now, because the Dominicans do not like black skin, even when they are black themselves. That is the truth.
            Go play in traffic, Tracey.

            • johnnybizzoy June 19th, 2015 at 21:49

Maybe it is not all about skin – maybe it has something to do with culture.

              • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 22:06

How? How does it have to do with the culture? What in the culture causes humans to slaughter one another?

                • johnnybizzoy June 19th, 2015 at 22:10

When different cultures live together, there is often mistrust and mis-communication. This is very common in societies across the world. Maybe the Haitians and the Dominicans don’t speak the same language, eat the same food, have the same customs or morals. Maybe it is deeper than simply, “hating black skin?” Just a suggestion.

                  • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 23:20

In 1937, Dominican strongman Rafael Trujillo massacred Haitians by the thousands. In order to distinguish between Haitians & Dominicans, Haitians were asked to say parsley in Spanish, those that could not pronounce parsley were executed on the spot. In a lot of conflicts, skin color is not the issue, but in the situation between the Dominicans &

Haitians, skin color plays the major role.

                      From the Wikipedia article:

                      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haitians_in_the_Dominican_Republic

“After the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, the number of Haitians doubled to 2 million, most of whom illegally crossed after the border opened for international aid. Human Rights Watch estimated that 70,000 documented Haitian immigrants and 1,930,000 undocumented immigrants were living in Dominican Republic”

“Almost 75% of the Haitians living in the Dominican Republic have been residing in the country for less than 10 years”

“Just 10% of Haitians send remittances to Haiti, with 5.4% sending with a frequency of once per quarter or higher.”
—seems to me they might have some legitimate concerns about the recent influx of illegal immigrants.

it’s a pretty common theme – robber-barons inside a country will encourage immigration of poor migrants to work as near-slaves in places like sugar cane fields. When the economy is good, the local population will tolerate this. When the economy is not so good, the local population goes a bit native. This happened in 1937.

There are obvious parallels to what is happening in the US today with illegal and/or massive amounts of legal, unskilled labor. This kind of immigration works well for capital owners who exploit the labor, but it doesn’t work so well for the native unskilled workers who are displaced from jobs, or for the native middle class workers who pay the lion’s share of taxes to support social welfare programs for the immigrants. These kinds of income redistribution schemes are at the root of most of the “racism” and resistance from middle class elements. It’s just an observation.

I know Haitians personally, that arrived in the U.S. in 2009 are in Law School. They are absolutely driven to get their education and don’t let anything get in their way. I ask them sometimes, when do you sleep?
Because they hold down 2 jobs and still attend CUNY university and get top grades. They are not stopping there, as they plan to go on to Law School. Haitians are an asset anywhere they go, they are just so smart, learn rapidly. I work with Nigerians as well and can say the same about them.

                    • johnnybizzoy June 22nd, 2015 at 00:20

I was skeptical, but a quick scan of online resources reveals that, in my own subjective view, they do pull their own weight, as immigrants from an impoverished nation go. HOWEVER – I did find this one unflattering synopsis, which does not provide different statistics, merely different subjective point of view: http://www.vdare.com/articles/national-data-by-edwin-s-rubenstein-207

Millions of white Europeans slaughtered each other during the most destructive wars the world has ever seen. And you talk to us about Africans, Haitians, Dominicans? Their atrocities are minuscule compared to what happened in Europe.

          • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 17:09

What is the context Tracey? Dominicans are kicking out the Haitians, dumping them back into Haiti, no food, no water, no nothing.
            Something untrue about that?
Africans are slaughtering other Africans in South Africa.
            That is true also.
Want to be an Albino in South Africa Tracey?
How long will you last, before they cut off your arm, leg or even kill you, just because you are an Albino.
Stop being in denial Tracey. Racism is alive and well all over the world.

Racism is alive and well everywhere, from South African, where the limbs of Albinos are hacked off for good luck, where Africans from neighboring countries are hacked to death, burned alive on the streets of South Africa, as recently as today. To Israel where Palestinians are treated like trash, to the Dominican Republic, where a massive expulsion of Haitians, even Haitians born in DR is now underway, to African migrants drowning at sea by the thousands, to Malaysia towing boats full of Myanmar Rohinya refugees to sea and leaving them there, no food no water. What would happen if Puerto Rico decided to expel all Dominicans back to their country of origin, like the Dominicans are doing to the Haitians right now? At least in America, there is recourse, Law Enforcement will arrest a white guy that mows down 9 African Americans, he will be brought to justice. In the countries, that I just mentioned, nobody would even bat an eyelash when one group attacks and kills the other.

            • johnnybizzoy June 19th, 2015 at 21:56

it’s because the media wants to whip up partisan mistrust in both groups of people – so that the proletariat never EVER comes together over simple issues to challenge the will of the oligarchs. I thought we went over this already? Partisan ideology on both sides is delusion, remember?

              • OldLefty June 20th, 2015 at 06:57

Personally, I think the mainstream media, particularly Fox, is more interested in delivering viewers and readers to advertisers, and they achieve that by telling then what they want to hear.

                That’s capitalism.

News papers are the only ones left who at least spend the money on foreign bureaus, and do actual investigations, pouring over tax and phone records etc, traveling to interviews and such to do stories that may take months to complete….and they can barely keep afloat, leaving us with opinions based on the partisanship of members of the media and their consumers, replacing news with entertainment.

                “Went over this already?”

                That doesn’t imply agreement.

“Partisan ideology on both sides is delusion, remember?”

One has to look at each ideology individually.

What didn’t work is some sort of way to figure out that he was crazy and put him away before he could, like so many others, act on the insane thoughts in his brain. Tucson, Aurora, etc. Mental health treatment is a big problem in this country. Medicating someone is not the entire answer.

There is no doubt he will be found guilty and be punished although all that will not restore the lives of those killed and their community and family members.

          • Gadea June 19th, 2015 at 23:11

That would have saved his life and the lives of the people he shot dead. Mental health is a huge problem, that has not been probably addressed, unfortunately. Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner and now Dylan Storm Roth, had mental health issues that were not properly addressed with drastic consequences.

            • StoneyCurtisll June 20th, 2015 at 10:04

All of them were ‘law abiding citizen legal gun owners’ who were 2nd amendment proponents..

Adam Lanza, James Holes, Jared Lee Loughner all had mental health issues. In each case their families, friends and teachers all knew that they had menthal health problems. So why is that a joke to you?

          • StoneyCurtisll June 20th, 2015 at 09:58

            I see..
White man kills a bunch of people, so he must be “crazy” or mentally ill and needed our help through the wonders of psychiatry.

If he was black you would be calling him a thug and a menace to society then go into a tirade about “black on black” violence inferring that blacks are predisposed to violence…

But that poor little white boy in Charleston, if only he could have got our help, he wouldn’t headed for prison for the rest of his life.

            • madjayhawk June 20th, 2015 at 10:50

I guess you don’t think black-on-black violence exists.

Tell that to the grieving black mothers of all those kids killed this past week by black shooters.

Blacks are no more predisposed to deadly violence that anyone else. The statistics on murders in the US shows that I guess doesn’t it?

              https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/expanded-homicide/expanded_homicide_data_table_6_murder_race_and_sex_of_vicitm_by_race_and_sex_of_offender_2013.xls

Keep in mind when looking at that data that around 13% of the population in the US is black. They commit almost 45% of the murders in the US. Most of those are black people killing other black people. If the President and his friend the Civil Rights Icon, Jesse Jackson, would work on that problem instead of wasting their time playing racial politics and blaming guns or white people they would save a lot of lives.

Do you think that the FBI is lying to us? No, but you will call me a racist for showing you the truth. Name calling is all a liberal can do when faced with the truth.

              • StoneyCurtisll June 20th, 2015 at 10:55

You dont have to cite government statistics…
It’s already obvious you are a racist..

                • madjayhawk June 20th, 2015 at 11:40

Liberals always resort to name calling when they can’t come up with anything else. They are so closed minded and dumb that they can’t face facts like 45% of the murders in the US are committed by 13% of the population. They don’t want to deal with the problem and come up with an explanation or a solution so they start in with the name calling. They have used the word racist so many times the word has no meaning any more. Everyone in the world except themselves are racists. They live in a weirdo world of make believe where all problems can be solved by calling someone a racist. That is too bad because if people worked together and found people we could elect that would actually work on the problem and help people to overcome whatever it is that is causing it instead of just talking about it or telling us we must do something about it or blaming others.

              • StoneyCurtisll June 20th, 2015 at 11:23

Dylan is under arrest, he will face justice, perhaps even be executed by the State for his horrific crime. That is because this is the USA and in the USA murderers are not treated with impunity. It is not the same everywhere else in the world.

How many black people in Chicago were killed or wounded in Chicago this past week by other black people? The good Rev needs to quit race baiting and minister to those in need in his own home town and find a way to get people there to quit killing one another.

The good people in Charleston are coming together and helping one another like all good people do in a time of tragedy just fine without his ‘help’. He wants to divide Charleston and the country into two hating camps to benefit himself. Shame on anyone who joins him.

    • greenfloyd June 20th, 2015 at 05:16

Jesse Jackson is a Civil Rights icon and I don’t accept your suggestion he wants to “divide” anybody. AME church is identified by Jackson and millions of Americans as being at the heart of their struggle for civil rights. No one should try to deny its important, albeit tragic, role in American history to the present-day. Please let the Rev pass without harm.

Although you seem to have “race” issues yourself, it is true the level of black-on-black killing and crime in places like Chicago is appaling. It’s also true some liberals, including Obama, would rather talk about something else when the subject comes up.

      • StoneyCurtisll June 20th, 2015 at 09:37

        • madjayhawk June 20th, 2015 at 10:31

The president ‘talks’ about gun violence. What has he done about it? Nothing, because he thinks the problem is with guns and not with the people who use them. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. How many people are killed there weekly? He and the Civil Rights Icon Rev Jackson need to rethink this problem because their solutions to date seem to be totally worthless.

          • Dwendt44 June 20th, 2015 at 13:28

With GOP control of Congress, there’s little he can do. Any attempt at reasonable gun control is filibustered by Republicans who are scared schittless by the NRA, a terrorist organization. Even the laws already on the books, the laws the ammosexuals say we should enforce first, are so full of holes due to NRA meddling that they are either useless or to hard to enforce.

            • madjayhawk June 20th, 2015 at 14:08

If Republicans have been in so complete control of everything for the past 7 years they should get total credit for all the ‘good things’ that have happened right?

The power of the NRA (and any lobbyist group whose members vote and contribute money is powerful – like government employees unions or the NAACP for example) is considerable. So are the unions and NAACP terrorist organizations too? All groups like the NRA, NAACP, and the unions work hard to protect the interests of their members. That is what their members want them to do. I guess if you do not agree with a group that makes them a terrorist organization.

Tell me what gun law has the President proposed and has had rejected by congress (including Democrats that aren’t 100% behind every new gun law that comes down the road). The President could have a gun law if he sat down with both sides of the aisle and other interested groups for and against guns and honestly worked one out. The President was apparently more interested in playing politics with the issue. THE PRESIDENT HAD A TOTALLY SUPPORTIVE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS AND HIGH APPROVAL RATINGS FOR 2 OF HIS SIX YEARS. Why didn’t he do it then? Aren’t you totally embarrassed with having to write lame excuses for the President for every failure of his administration? Hearing that it is Congress’s fault, George Bush’s fault, or the weather’s fault is getting sort of old. It isn’t even funny anymore. It is called responsibility. It is called leadership which takes action and responsibility. Taking action sometimes means you have to actually do something.

Here I will help you: here are two proposals (out of 15) he made that are good:

Requires background checks for all gun sales and strengthens the background check system. This would include removing barriers under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act so that states may more freely share information about mental health issues involving potential gun purchasers.

Provides states with monetary incentives—$20 million in fiscal year FY 2013 and a proposed $50 million in FY 2014—to share information so that records on criminal history and people prohibited from gun ownership due to mental health reasons are more available.

I can’t see anyone who would disagree with these. What a normal negotiator would do is take the 15 proposals, take out the ones everyone agrees with then work on the ones people have problems with. At the end pass the the ones everyone agrees with and come back to the others later. But this president appears to be an all or nothing or my way or the highway kind of guy on almost everything so he doesn’t get very far. You can see why some of the proposals weren’t embraced by Republicans (nothing to do with guns as such) just by reading them.

And tell me what new gun law would have prevented this from happening? The law that could have prevented it was in place. It didn’t work because either the gun store owner ignored it or the government screwed up and didn’t give the gun store owner the information he needed to deny Ruth a gun. In either case, this needs to be corrected or prosecuted. Whichever. No new gun laws are needed. Sorry.

              • Dwendt44 June 20th, 2015 at 14:34

You should check on the news more often. Those supposed two years was only 2 months. And Republicans had pledged to block, resist or filibuster any and every bill the President offered or supported. That included a bill for universal background checked. The NRA was up in arms about it. A bill to limit the size of magazines was blocked as well.
The provisions in the health care bill that keeps doctors, state agencies and the CDC from sharing information and so forth was put in there because the NRA demanded that it was in there. And yes, sad to say there were Democrats that are scared of the NRA then and still.
No matter what proposal is offered, the NRA and the obedient Republicans block it, filibuster it, or just refuse to bring it up for a vote.
Spending any money on gun control will never happen. It would have to be voted on in the House first (spending bill) and the GOP wouldn’t bring it up for a vote and it wouldn’t pass anyway, the NRA will see to that.
The bills proposed were clean bills, no weird amendments (at least not by Democrats) and it’s the Republicans that put poison pills into bill they don’t like, if it looks like that bill might have a chance of passing.
Of course unions and the NAACP work for their members, but they also work for ALL Americans. Making this country a better country. The NRA is the mouth piece for the gun and ammo manufacturers and it’s hardest nose members. It does not work for the American people. They want the wild west meme to be the standard.

                • madjayhawk June 20th, 2015 at 16:06

I think that the NRA was concerned about the government using a cover of ‘doing gun related research’ to determine if a patient was a gun owner. Personally I don’t want my doctor sharing anything about my personal life with a bunch of anti-gun or any other government bureaucrats in the name of research. Meta data is fine. But I think it was cataloging individual gun owners. The NRA, I think, has always been opposed to the government developing lists of gun owners.

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2013/01/17/1463981/meet-the-nra-backed-senate-democrats-who-oppose-obamas-gun-violence-prevention-plan/ Know who Harry Reid is and what his position is in the Senate? His say-so pretty much shut the Senate down for 2 years. Nothing voted on. Nothing debated. Nothing period.

The unions and NAACP work for ALL Americans? All Americans who are union members (In 2013, the percentage of workers belonging to a union was 11.3% and falling. The rate for the private sector was just 6.7%, and for the public sector 35.3%.) or black (13% of the population). These organization could care less about anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Same with the NRA. The NRA plays hardball politics and can be nothing but a political thug, but that is what its members want. Just like the unions and the NAACP.

Politicians in Washington play games with bills. Both sides do. They name them things like The Child Safety Act or the Affordable Care Act so when their opponents vote against it because it has something crazy like legalizing rape in it so they can say in an ad “My Opponent was against Child Safety” or women or the handicapped or seniors or the military or the environment or poor folks or whatever. It is a game. We should vote the people who do that sort of thing out. They all are a bunch of corrupt fools. It would be nice if we had a majority of congressman actually working for the American people.

He sure had a lot less grey in 2012, just after the Sandy Hook massacre. Three years and several additional massacres at the hands of both psychopaths and the much more common gang-bangers killing their way to the top. I suspect it’s Gangsta-culture that generates much if not most black-on-black killings, crimes and corruption (radicalizing) of the young. From what I gather the stats indicate the biggest enemy of black people, are black people.

” From what I gather the stats indicate the biggest enemy of black people, are black people.”…

I guess you would agree that since most “white people” are killed by other white people, that white people could also be considered their own biggest enemy…
            Right?

            • greenfloyd June 21st, 2015 at 00:53

Right! I assume white-on-white murders and all other colors are likewise as well. Although I don’t know if there may be significant variations involving various mixes of colors and races involved in violent crime. Are blacks overrepresented in porportion to their numbers? I don’t know. Although I suspect they are. And it’s clear to me that terrible truth weighs like a bale of cotton upon the shoulders of our nations’s first black President.

What racism? You use the word racist to impugn anyone who dares to disagree with your racist views of the world. You think that as long as you are a liberal white/black and can call others racists for telling the truth you are smarter and better than they are. You are not. Why don’t you just discuss in a rational fashion what bothers you about what I have written instead of being an ignorant hater? Jesse Jackson is a race baiter. He divides. He comes in and divides communities and then leaves. Look at the Trayvon Martin case. Look at the Duke Lacrosse case. There are many other cases where he has done the same thing. Tell me know he has helped communities overcome racial problems. Give me some examples.

Everyone is afraid of them, because they commit the majority of the street crime, muggings, robberies, assaults and nobody wants to get hurt. The very same people that were out protesting

      Jesse Jackson said:

Keep Hope Alive”, speech at the Democratic National Convention (19 July 1988)

There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to
      walk down the

street and hear footsteps and start thinking about
      robbery.

Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved….

After all we have been through.

Just to think we can’t walk down our own
      streets, how humiliating.

Remarks at a meeting of Operation PUSH in Chicago (27 November
      1993).

Quoted in “Crime: New Frontier – Jesse Jackson Calls It Top
Civil-Rights Issue” by Mary A. Johnson, 29 November 1993, Chicago Sun-Times (ellipsis in original).

Partially quoted in “In America; A Sea Change On Crime” by Bob Herbert, 12 December 1993, New York Times.

Does anyone think that Jesse Jackson is a racist for saying that when he heard footsteps,

he felt relieved, when he saw a White person. I guess if he had seen my 6 foot black grandson, Jesse Jackson would have been afraid.

Don’t care what you believe. You are speck of dust in the world.
He is standing right next to me, he is laughing at what you said.
