Rand Paul On McCain Criticism: ‘Consider The Source’

Senator and presidential candidate Rand Paul was on radio with me Monday night and responded to those who’ve attacked him for has strong stance against domestic surveillance.

SEN PAUL: I think by drawing attention to the fact that what we were doing is illegal, collection all of the American phone records, all the time with a single generalized warrant,  goes against the 4th Amendment but also the appeals court that is just below the Supreme Court has now ruled that it is illegal. I think by drawing attention to it that it helps the battle, but I can’t ultimately defeat it unless I have more support in Washington.  I think I have support outside of Washington, but not necessarily inside of Washington…

COLMES:  Just today Lindsey Graham announced his candidacy for President. The guy who said anybody can get a better deal , even Obama, on Iran than you. The media has made much of, well he’s just in there to be a kind of be the foil to Rand Paul, do you see it that way?

SEN. PAUL: You know I’m not so sure that the American public is going to be real fond of anyone who supports censorship, who says you could be indefinitely detained without a trial or a lawyer. Somebody who says if you ask for a courtroom they should drone you, I mean that kind of frivolous disregard for the Bill of Rights is unlikely to be popular in any party’s primary…

COLMES: Your relationship with John McCain maybe a little different, he said there’s a high priority for fundraising and political ambitions on your part,  than the security of the country. That’s got to get under your skin.

SEN. RAND PAUL: Well you know, you consider the source…

COLMES: What do you mean when you say about  John McCain consider the source?

SEN. RAND PAUL: Well you know I think there are folks in our primary and in our party who sometimes I don’t think have a full regard for the right to privacy and the individualization of warrants.
