Schoen: How She Can Woo Moderates And Independents
Political analyst Doug Schoen advised Bill Clinton and has good advice for Hillary about how to appeal to moderates and independents without losing the liberal base.
To do so, she should focus on a few core issues:
As a nod to the progressive left, Clinton should ferociously champion raising the minimum wage and reining in the banks. These are crucial planks of Warren’s agenda and are widely popular with moderates and independents, too.
She should address income inequality by articulating an inclusive, pro-growth agenda. Economists say time and time again that the real issue isn’t inequality but the opportunity gap. By championing strategies including job creation, workforce expansion and more competitive wages, Clinton will reassure progressives without estranging business owners.
To show that her administration would not just be a third Obama term, Clinton should support reforms to the Affordable Care Act. Even progressives admit that Obamacare is far from perfect, and Clinton can focus on tort reform or opening interstate insurance markets to begin insuring coverage for even more Americans.
Finally, Clinton should champion immigration reform that both secures Americas borders and creates a pathway to citizenship.
These common sense, bipartisan solutions will make a compelling platform for Clinton and help her immeasurably with independent and moderate voters who do not currently see any good option in the field. Hillary can naturally occupy the center — she just needs to tell us exactly how she plans to do it.

Hillary IS a moderate. It’s her left flank she should worry about.

There are many of us, maybe a majority of Americans, who would LOVE an Obama third term. Repeal the 22nd Amendment.
The only “reform” of Obamacare I would like to see is to scrap it altogether and have a single-payer system that covers everyone from cradle to grave.

given the reality of a “Corporate America”, a republican dominated congress
and a very skeptical left wing, easier said than done.

She will most likely have my vote. The planks listed above sound like they could fit in well with a winning platform. I think that lefties realize we are asking for idealized versions of what is possible in a diverse society that includes the right wing nut jobs that refuse to empathise with anyone that isn’t exactly like them.

Clinton will not reign in big banks she’s in bed w/ wall st. And on the ACA, she needs to push to put a system in place, preferably single payer, if ACA is repealed or even as an alternative. The ACA is better than the old system, but it still doesn’t work.
