Conservative White House Reporter Refuses To Call Obama ‘President’ At Briefing

At several points during the Obama presidency, there have been controversies surrounding how people in the media should refer to President Obama. Many supporters of our nation’s first black president bristle when they hear him referred to simply as “Obama,” or “Mr. Obama,” even on second reference. The preferred formulation of news organizations has always been to use the honorific in the first reference in an article, then use the last name only for the rest of the piece, and they’ve almost uniformly reacted to this sensitivity with a mix of thinly-veiled pique and condescension.

But there’s no argument that calling Obama by his last name only at a press briefing, without a first reference, is anything but a sign of disrespect, at best. That’s why an exchange between The Washington Examiner‘s Susan Crabtree and White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, at Tuesday’s daily briefing, was so jarring. In asking Earnest about the President’s remarks at the Easter Prayer Breakfast, and whether the president plans to put a stop to ISIS beheadings by appointing an ambassador-level envoy for religious minorities, Crabtree did it four times...READ MORE

By disrespecting the Presidency, she/they are disrespecting the entire Nation…But, but, but they did it to Bush, some will say…Yes, they may have disrespected Bush, but not the office…the corporate stenographer must now realize that they are a dying breed…

Even as much as I disagree with the President’s politics, he’s still my President. I will pay him all due respect and defend him with my life, if necessary, as any good citizen would do.

Your life? While I would not want anything bad to happen to OBAMA, let’s not get carried away here.

You wouldn’t? We all have to die from something. Would that really be such a bad way to go?

Oh the humanity! The man at this point deserves no respect because of the way he has disrespected the Constitution and thus all of us. He can’t vacate the office soon enough.

Provide examples of this “disrespect”, please…and if you link to blogs or RW “news” sites (CNS, for example), I’ll just pity you and laugh.
Not that I won’t pity you and laugh anyway.

The Office of the President demands respect, even if you disagree with the person in it. I said a lot of not so nice things about President Bush that I regret saying because now I recognize how disrespectful to the office of the President said things were.

” I said a lot of not so nice things about President Bush that I regret saying because…” how many times have you sent ignorant emails, or held signs, depicting nonsense? it had never occurred to me in all my years, to say and do the things that “parasites” living in human flesh, have said and done to this president.

I can’t say I’ve been watching these things and this is the first time I’ve heard about this one. It would be one thing if she’d been doing it all along or was smiling and waving to the righties as they shouted huzzahs, but another if she just made a stupid mistake once.
In this case she has apologized and if she gets it right and there is nothing further it’s worth just forgiving and forgetting.

    • trees April 11th, 2015 at 21:12

Isn’t it just a title? Do we really think we compel respect? I think if this president wasn’t so divisive, if this president wasn’t so partisan, if this president didn’t engage in such foolishness himself, you know, like referring to Governor Walker as, Mr Walker, that he might actually have a leg to stand on here….

      • burqa April 11th, 2015 at 22:00

        “Just a title”?
It’s good manners, for one thing. I don’t know whether you have children or not, but one would hope you train them to use expressions like “ma’am” and “sir,” even to strangers whom they have no reason to respect.
One would also hope you would teach your children to display good manners and common courtesies even when others are being more coarse, for one should not allow the behavior of others to dictate how one acts.
Perhaps you have noticed that I do not engage you with the same vitriol as others around here. That is because of how I was taught to treat other people. In so doing, it paves the way for more fruitful discussion even when we strongly disagree. This is an illustration as to why we need to preserve social niceties, especially when it is public figures behaving where impressionable youngsters can see and draw conclusions as to what is acceptable in how we treat people.

        • trees April 11th, 2015 at 22:22

There’s an old axiom, “you gotta give respect, if you want to be respected”. If this president wants to be respected, he’ll need to respect others, something that he hasn’t been real good at, so far…..

          • Chinese Democracy April 11th, 2015 at 22:25

the Office of the President of the United States deserves respect.. regardless if you like the current president or not. And if you can’t seem to bring yourself to be respectful. Then get the hell out of the WH briefing room because you are nothing but a partisan low rent hack with a pen

            • trees April 11th, 2015 at 22:31

Did you feel the same way when Bush was president? Did you demand the same level of respect, or did you demand his head on a stick cause you felt he was a war criminal?

              • jasperjava April 12th, 2015 at 00:28

B*sh was never legitimately elected, and you know it. It’s one thing to respect the office, but not if the office was acquired through fraud and cheating.

And yes, he is a torturer and a war criminal, as well as the most incompetent “President” since at least Hoover, possibly Harding.

The fact that you think warmongers and torturers are worthy of respect speaks loudly of your moral failings.

              • Chinese Democracy April 12th, 2015 at 01:23

Want to get real? I have NEVER seen ANY President treated with so much disrespect as this one. But then again … he IS black

                • trees April 12th, 2015 at 01:33

Hey, thanks for “keeping it real”….

His opponents could care less about his race. Condi Rice, what color is she? I’m guessing you don’t like Condi Rice, is it because she’s black?

                  • fancypants April 12th, 2015 at 01:53

condi wasn’t president or you would see the right freak out

                  • OldLefty April 12th, 2015 at 07:08

His opponents clearly care VERY much about race.

                    1) And Colin and Condi, kept their place; while Powell, went along he was pummeled when he spoke out, and the neocons ran roughshod over Condi;

“You can’t understate the disrespect of Condi Rice in all of this, especially by Cheney, which freed up Rumsfeld to ignore her as well.
At a meeting over Gitmo, Rumsfeld stood up and said, ‘I have another meeting”.
                    She said, “Sit down”.
“this meeting is over”, Rumsfeld said, and walked out.
Then Tenet also said, “This is BS” and he walked out.
                    – Josh Meyer and Terry McDermott (LA Times)

                    That is from “officialdom”

                    From the riffraff, that has always been laying just under the surface;

Michael Savage, claimed that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice “was chosen by George Bush as part of an affirmative action program in order to make his Cabinet look like America” and called her “a schoolmarm who has been pushed up the ladder all of her life because of social engineering.”

                  • Chinese Democracy April 12th, 2015 at 15:53

I’m guessing you think any believes that a good number of conservatives are full on racists? Oh a black conservative that must prove conservatives arent racists … LOL

              • OldLefty April 12th, 2015 at 06:46

You need to compare media to media in both administrations and riffraff to riffraff in both administrations, not media of one to riffraff of the other.

          • burqa April 11th, 2015 at 23:02

Again, one should not allow the behavior of others to determine how one behaves.
At least that’s how this Southerner was taught and having good manners has served me quite well, even when dealing with those who were more coarse.
I do not wait for others to show me respect.
Now this was a press conference, but another example of why this is important may be seen on the House or Senate floor where a certain decorum is maintained. It is not that way just to look fancy, but because observing social niceties makes it possible for strongly differing opinions to be held without insult being given that would bog the place down in personal recrimination. To the degree that these standards have eroded, both houses have been less able to do the people’s business.

The poor manners of this lady are not a reflection on Obama, but on her. She apologized and one hopes she doesn’t do it again. Without waiting for her to do something that would call for her to be respected, I intend to give her the benefit of the doubt and regard her apology as genuine.

I wish my mama were here because she could explain to you better than I the importance of good manners and the role it plays in our society.

            • trees April 11th, 2015 at 23:18

Again, one should not allow the behavior of others to determine how one behaves.

Sounds like good advice, maybe, if we’re lucky, president Barack Obama will happen onto this site and learn the importance of respecting the offices of those who politically oppose him. Maybe, if he starts treating others as he wishes to be treated, the reporters will pick up on this and address him as Mr President. I know if he were to do this it’d make us all proud of him.

              • burqa April 11th, 2015 at 23:26

It’s not about Obama. Nowhere in the article did I read that she behaved that way because of something Obama did.
This is about the poor behavior of a conservative reporter. Without waiting for evidence to verify, I am giving her the benefit of the doubt by regarding this as an aberration rather than representative of her manners in general.
She apologized and deserves a chance to show it was genuine.

                • trees April 11th, 2015 at 23:35

Oh, but it is about Obama. It’s about Obama not getting the respect from a reporter that some think he should. I’m merely pointing out that what he’s getting, is what he’s been giving. What goes around, comes around…..

If you refer to government leaders as Mr, instead of by title, such as Governor, then it should come as no surprise when you are held to the standard that you have set.

I think your mom would agree with me on this.

                  • burqa April 11th, 2015 at 23:50

The title of the thread is “Conservative White House Reporter Refuses To Call Obama ‘President’ At Briefing.”

It’s about what the reporter did.
I do not intend to continue this foolish exchange and your attempt to change the subject.

I don’t blame you, defending the indefensible is a tall order.

Kinda hard to blame the reporter for simply behaving in the same manner as the president.

I’d be looking for a way out too…..

“… that some think he should.” so you’re suggesting he doesn’t deserve respect as the President of the fk’n United States? you don’t have to fk’n like his policies, in which case you’ve got to be super stupid to not appreciate, the great economy he’s created, or the number of jobs, or the healthcare system, etc., only you don’t know what else to bitch about. it’s that beautiful tan that your political piss ants can’t stomach. well, get over it already.

                • whatthe46 April 12th, 2015 at 23:00

HA HA HA HA! that’s like what the palins “christian” palins said when bris got pregnant out of wedlock. you know the family values people. the wait about sex thing people. after bris got preg, it was all “GOD forgave.” so i guess if you say it enough after fk’n doing wrong so much, it must be true. she only apologized because of the backlash, not because she meant it. so, if i apologize i must be sencere. and people will forget that i’m a racist. gotcha.

                  • burqa April 12th, 2015 at 23:15

With my way, if it was an honest mistake then I think I described the way to go.
If the apology was not genuine, we’ll know soon enough and will know we fairly gave her every chance.
I’ve made mistakes by shooting off my mouth that I later regretted. This is how I would hope to be treated and also how I would want those whom I favor politically would be treated were they to commit a verbal gaffe.
I will be consistent when I repeat this same position the next time a politician I favor commits a verbal gaffe. If it’s a one-time deal, then graciously give them a chance.
I extended the same courtesy toward you a couple of hours ago when you called me a name. I think you deserve a fair chance to show that was an aberration and not reflective of the way you really are.

                    • whatthe46 April 12th, 2015 at 23:25

she didn’t shoot off her mouth out of “ignorance” as in she didn’t know any better. she purposely disrespected the man and the office. for that, i don’t forgive her. i don’t buy in that she wasn’t aware she was being disrespectful. in that case, she should not have access at all to anymore briefings. if she’s that stupid.

                    • burqa April 12th, 2015 at 23:35

I think there is a very good chance you are right. If so, we’ll know soon enough.
I can have a very sharp tongue. I have to be mindful to keep it dialed back and this is how I would hope to be treated were I to say something I regretted afterward. It is also how I would want someone I like to be dealt with. At such a time I can make the same point and withstand any charge that I dealt with conservatives differently.

                    • whatthe46 April 12th, 2015 at 23:49

i am not above opening my mouth and saying things i regret. but, i don’t spew bs, in the sense that i know i’m being wrong. i may say chit out of frustration and when called out, i will say, yep, you were right, you didn’t deserve that. but, in this case, it wasn’t out of frustration or perhaps some form of misunderstanding. it was all about first hand disrespect. totally different. she’s a reporter, given access to white house briefings. no, i don’t forgive her. but, i don’t hate her, because that would mean i would have her on my mind. and she’s not worth it.

The President treats RepubliKKKans with far more respect than they deserve.

Why should he give respect to economic feudalists and white supremacists?

The President has shown enormous patience dealing with his intellectual and moral inferiors, despite the snarling brutal attacks he has to endure from them daily.

Exactly. The Party of Lincoln has become the party of the Old Confederacy. You might want to look at recent electoral maps.

              • OldLefty April 12th, 2015 at 06:43

                Projection, yet again.

I find that a good guideline, that is about 90% accurate, is that whatever the right accuses it’s opponents of, is actually true of them.

Thus the “deficit hawks” are actually deficit peacocks, who have increased debt and deficits more than their opponents, the “small government” advocates LOVE big nanny state government when they like the outcome, the policies of the “national security” hawks always make us more insecure in the long term, patriotism is defined as obedience to them alone, welfare is swell when it goes to their big welfare queens of the top 1%, they LOVE states rights when they like the outcome, ala trying to overturn Colorado’s legalizing marijuana, they HATE judicial activism, (while supporting the most activist judges) unless they want a different outcome, then, as in the case of marriage equality, they call for “prodding Congress to strip federal courts of jurisdiction over the issue” (Ted Cruz).

Now the party of Lincoln and Union has become the party of Lincoln’s assassin and secession.

This Republican Party lost it’s way in the 1990s when a guy whom they considered a nobody from Arkansas, DARED to beat their blue blood and Reagan heir, and then went completely over the cliff when the black guy put his hand on THEIR Bible and moved into THIER house… AND… he was the first president since Eisenhower, (whom they also called a communist) to win over 51% of the vote, TWICE.

                THAT is unforgivable.

                The only thing that saves them today is the mainstream media’s obsession with ‘both siderism’ or “High Broderism where the rules usually are;

                1) If it is clearly the fault of Democrats…. blame Democrats.
                2) If it clearly the fault of Democrats AND Republicans…. blame both sides.
                3) If it clearly the fault of Republicans….. blame both sides.

, he’ll need to respect others, something that he hasn’t been real good at, so far
            ________________

Thou dost project too much, Methinks.

Neurotic projection is perceiving others as operating in ways one unconsciously finds objectionable in yourself.

Show this particular president unprecedented respect was the GOP strategy from the moment he won the the 2008 election.

They planned the precise tactics on the night of his inauguration at the Caucus Room in DC with Frank Luntz and senior GOP members worked out a plan on
Inauguration day, 2009, to repeatedly block Obama over the coming four years to
try to ensure he would not be re-elected.

As former Sen. George Voinovich goes on record telling … “If Obama was for it, we had to be against it. “He [McConnell] wanted everyone to hold the fort. All he cared about was making sure Obama could never have a clean victory.”

Hence, Cap and Trade went from being “market solutions” when Republicans promoted it to “anti businesses Cap and Tax” when Obama shunned his base and reached across the aisle to promote a policy that REPUBLICANS had supported in the
            past.

            Meanwhile,

            Florence SC Republican Rep.
Kris Crawford, articulated it well; he was telling a group of doctors the fight over
Medicaid was a political one. “it is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House”

This, Obama has show Congress no respect meme is yet another example of the truth being diametrically opposite the version presented in the right wing echo chamber.

I will take all the disrespect in a press conference over bombing the middle east any day of the week.

True patriot….doesn’t deserve any respect….it has to be earned….and most sane people lost respect for him at his first of hundreds of blatant lies….

      riiight

  12. trees April 11th, 2015 at 20:27

I think we should address him as, “Our Majesty the Honorable King President of the United States”, that should make everyone happy….

This way, the left wingerz get what they want and the right wingerz get what they want….

The left wing gets a title they can hold up as highly esteemed and the right wing gets a title that they can laugh about.

    We’ll call that a win-win…..

  13. jasperjava April 12th, 2015 at 01:05

This is rich. You demand respect for yourself, and yet don’t have any for the President of the United States, who has already done so much for you and every other American. You’d rather lynch him than call him “Mr. President”, and you talk about civil discourse?

There is no civil discourse to be had with Nazis, Klansmen, and other types of right-wing extremists.

    • burqa April 12th, 2015 at 01:29

Sometimes you can have a civil discussion with trees, but other times, like this, he goes off the deep end, can’t stay on topic and is more desperate for human contact of any kind more than anything. That’s why he’s arguing an inane point having nothing to do wityh the topic at hand.
You can see I gave him a chance and was nice about it and all; but when he goes off like this the best thing to do is just ignore him. This has nothing to do with debating points, but everything to do with getting a response and keeping it going, regardless of what is being said.

      • trees April 12th, 2015 at 17:28

We’re having a civil discussion. I find it humorous when you align yourself with a mouth breathing left winger whose idea of civility is to hurl false allegations and insults….

That garners a big LOL every time…..

But then, what can I expect from you? You can’t even admit that president Obama has treated others in government with the same discourtesy that Susan Crabtree is being accused of…..

        • OldLefty April 12th, 2015 at 19:32

But then, what can I expect from you? You can’t even admit that president Obama has treated others in government with the same discourtesy that Susan Crabtree is being accused of…..

          _______

          What exactly did Obama do?

  14. BigMike May 1st, 2015 at 20:53

LOL, is this really an issue? Those reporters are pressed for time and are hurried to ask their questions so I don’t see why these is an issue. Clearly everyone knows who she was referring to, as the article itself states many people refer to him as simply “Obama” even in the media. Plus, a title is just a title and there is no offical law or rules that say it has to be used nor more than saying “Mr.” or “Mrs.” is. Seems a non-issue to me and grasping for straws for some drama.

    • allison1050 May 1st, 2015 at 21:10

Sooo Little Mikey, showing disrespect for the office is no big deal?

      • BigMike May 1st, 2015 at 23:47

Disrespect? Is it disrespectful every time someone addresses me without saying Mr? Even the article above says that there is no real protocol for this thing. There is nothing written down or anything. So unless they followed his name with some sort of insult the only disrespect would come if he took it as such.

So when you talk with friends or whatever do you say President Obama or do you just say Obama? Maybe its different around the nation but here people just say Obama because why waste another word when all know who you mean. Now if he were int he room it would be a different story, maybe, but from my understand the reporter was speaking to a white house aid or w/e.

    • tracey marie May 1st, 2015 at 21:40

says the guy who was angry because a stranger was on the phone during the national anthem. puleeze!

      • BigMike May 1st, 2015 at 23:41

Angry is putting it harshly. If you’re going to troll my history you should at least get it right and notice that on many occasions I defended their right to not take part in the anthem. That being said I personally find it distasteful as the anthem has a long history of protocol that everyone knows. Even according to this very article above, the protocols for addressing Obama are not concrete or set anywhere.
