Swagger: ‘Lame Duck’ Obama Mocks GOP

While the GOP “controls” (or not) both houses of Congress, President Obama continues to give them a public shellacking. Today, he took them to the woodshed over their embarrassing handling of the Loretta Lynch nomination during an interview with HuffPo:

“You don’t hold attorney general nominees hostage for other issues,” Obama told The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein in a sit-down interview. “This is our top law enforcement office. Nobody denies that she’s well-qualified. We need to go ahead and get her done.”

Lynch’s nomination has been languishing for more than 130 days. This week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) threw up another roadblock, warning that she wouldn’t get a vote until his chamber passes human trafficking legislation. Democrats object to anti-abortion language in the bill.

The president’s comments were essentially a call to arms to Senate Democrats to stand firm rather than surrender to the hostage-takers, i.e., Senate Republicans, on the trafficking bill.

“Middle-class economics works,” President Obama said. “That has been the history of this country. That has been the history of the last six years when we’ve implemented middle-class economics and the other side was telling us it would be a disaster and it would kill jobs and raise the deficit. Healthcare cost would explode. None of that happened.”

The Great Orange Satan pulled a couple more zingers from the transcript:

It’s important to note that at every step that we’ve taken over the past six years we were told our goals were misguided; they were too ambitious; that my administration’s policies would crush jobs and explode deficits, and destroy the economy forever. Remember that? Because sometimes we don’t do the instant replay, we don’t run the tape back, and then we end up having the same argument going forward. … One Republican in Congress warned our policies would diminish employment and diminish stock prices. Diminish stock prices. [laughter] The stock market has doubled since I came into office. Corporate profits are — corporate balance sheets are stronger than they have ever been — because of my terrible business policies.
