6.1 Million More Workers To Get Overtime Pay

Posted by | February 18, 2015 08:59 | Filed under: Economy Good News Politics Top Stories

This is another reason those who are living on the margins should be thankful there’s a Democrat in the White House.

Right now, as it stands, employers can pay full-time workers a low salary, and force them to work 50, 60, 70, and even 80 hours without paying them a single dime extra. This is a perversion of the process, and skirts around overtime rules, by having companies merely claiming certain workers are “exempt,” even if they aren’t that high up the corporate ladder.

Some expect salaried workers earning as high as $52,000 a year to receive overtime pay for any hours worked in excess of 40 hours. Right now the threshold is set at $23,660.

If all goes as planned, the liberal Economic Policy Institute estimates that 3.5 million workers will become eligible for extra pay if the threshold is raised to $42,000. As many as 6.1 million workers would qualify if it approaches $52,000.

To put things in perspective, potentially 47 percent of the nations workers are about to be affected. This is just more good economic news from the President.

We make time and a half after 8 hours in any given day. We make time and a half on Saturday till 3:30pm and then double time and double time on holidays and Sunday.

    Why?

    UNION!

I love it when right wing wacko-land starts spewing about Unions, and “right to work”. I’d like to see a business owner join the chamber of commerce without paying dues.

Wait, WHAT? Trying to restore the middle class? Trying to go back to the days where we understood that a consumer based economy only works when people have money to buy things? Can’t you liberals wait two seconds for trickle down to kick in?

That’s all well and good, but you’re also going to see prices rise, as companies pass the increased costs to consumers. So, eventually, employees’ purchasing power will drop back down to present levels. There’s no way to avoid it.

    • Larry Schmitt February 18th, 2015 at 11:51

That’s the excuse the chambers of commerce and other business groups use to avoid raising the minimum wage. There’s always some excuse employers have for not paying their employees what they’re worth, and it’s why unions had to be invented.

      • illinoisboy1977 February 18th, 2015 at 14:38

And, if workers feel they’re being treated unfairly, they can organize a union, or quit and find another job. It’s a free market, after all.

I never said anything about unemployment. Only that the businesses would do what they could to pass the extra costs along to consumers. Eventually, the dollar will be further devalued and the “higher” minimum will be just as it is today, in terms of real value. Nothing changes for very long, before it self-corrects. We’ll always have wealthy and poor people. It’s just an ugly and unavoidable fact of life.

Once again, it’s because people are willing to go to work for these people who pay low wages. As long as people are willing to perform the work for that wage, what the company gives out as bonuses has no bearing on the dynamic. They pay it because people are willing to take it.

            • whatthe46 February 18th, 2015 at 15:25

has it ever occurred to you that people take those jobs because they are available and they may have no other choice when it comes to supporting their families?

    • Dwendt44 February 18th, 2015 at 12:45

OR maybe some companies would hire enough workers to do the work in a 40 hour week instead of having three people do the work of five.

      • illinoisboy1977 February 18th, 2015 at 14:37

Possibly, but the companies are always going to do what maximizes profit and minimizes overhead. That’s simply the nature of business.

        • Larry Schmitt February 18th, 2015 at 16:24

And yet there are companies who actually pay their employees a living wage, higher than their competitors. They make slightly lower profits, but have happier workers, who are more likely to stay long term, and take better care of their customers, who are also more likely to stay long term.

      • illinoisboy1977 February 18th, 2015 at 14:36

Because, they don’t have to. If people would refuse to take jobs for the low pay, they’d have to increase what they pay, in order to fill the job. Truth is, there’s always someone willing to do it for less.

        • tracey marie February 18th, 2015 at 14:56

              • illinoisboy1977 February 19th, 2015 at 11:13

Well, you can’t have it both ways. Either unemployment is down, as the Administration is asserting, which means you have the opportunity to choose from more jobs and look for a more competitive wage, or unemployment is high and there are no options for job seekers.

I’ve been steadily employeed, for 15 years. In that time, I’ve been offered more money to stay with my current company, 5 times. Better offers have come along and my bosses value my abilities enough to match the other offers, every time. Still, I’m always on the lookout for something better.

So, how do the business laws and practices in Australia have anything to do with how things are done in the states? They have a completely different set of rules and standards. The comparison is superficial, at best.

          • illinoisboy1977 February 18th, 2015 at 15:13

Yes, really. You can’t accurately compare one nation’s wage and labor practices to another’s. There are too many variables that make a fair comparison impossible.

It means that if Australian businesses can find a way to pay its workers more, surely American businesses can find a way to do it. After all, this IS supposed to be an “exceptional nation.” It seems to me that if those who make this claim believe it, we would be more of a “can-do” nation rather than an “I don’t see a way to do ___ ” nation.

          • illinoisboy1977 February 19th, 2015 at 11:18

American businesses are having no problem getting people to accept the wages they’re offering. That’s what it comes down to, in business. What will people accept, in return for doing this job. If people really want to make more money, they shouldn’t accept jobs that offer a “low wage” for the work to be done. I understand that some people feel they HAVE to take the first thing that comes along and that’s fine. But, don’t stop looking for something better and let your current boss know that you’ll take a better offer, should it come along. If the boss doesn’t want to lose you and it’s within his authority, he may offer you more money to stay.
