Are We Better Than Israeli Newspaper That Erased Women From Paris Rally Photo?

In the first few weeks of 2015, we have been reminded of just how far back in time religious extremists would like to set back the progress that humankind has made. Even in celebrating unity against the terrorists who attacked French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israeli newspaper published a photo from last weekend’s unity rally in which, as you can see, all of the women who participated in the world leader photo were edited out. In the actual photos, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and others locked arms in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo, but for readers of HaMevaser, they might as well not have even existed.

The paper’s editor said he didn’t want to tarnish the memory of those killed in the attacks:

“Including a picture of a woman into something so sacred, as far as we are concerned, it can desecrate the memory of the martyrs and not the other way around,” (HaMevaser editor Binyamin Lipkin) said.

        that’s not progress, that’s a list of things all as a product of war and dominance and power mongering. I asked where “humankind” made progress.

          We made tremendous progress in the way we have made fuller participation in life more possible for the disabled.
          Our society has undergone a sea change on this one, as well as how we regard those who are mentally disabled.
          We now have handicapped-access bathrooms but I remember when they were few and far between, before the ADA. Maybe today people take for granted the curb cuts, ramps and other things to make it easier for the handicapped, but I remember when they were shut out of a lot of things.
          Same with those with mental issues.
          Below I listed several other things.

          Be a caveman if you prefer.

          Globally, life expectancy has risen dramatically rising 33% in the last 50 years and has never been higher;
          Global per capita GDP has never been higher and has risen sharply in the last decade (and over the last 50, 100 and 150 years);
          Global infant mortality rates have declined 66% since 1968;
          Global literacy rates have soared in the last 170 years growing from 10% to 80%. By 2015 this rate is expected to reach 86% (source: UNESCO Global Monitoring Report, 2006);
          Global poverty has been reduced by 50% since 1990 and extreme poverty has been reduced by 80% since 1970 (Source: Jonah Goldberg, Los Angeles Times, July 2, 2013).

          There are more humans than ever and we live longer, have higher incomes, are more educated and literate, have more leisure time, are more connected to each other and information and have more food than at any time in history. How is it possible to conclude anything other than life on planet earth has never been better? Human progress? Yes, really.

          • fahvel January 17th, 2015 at 01:52

            and there are nearly 7 billion humans methodically raping the planets resources. Your poverty comment is absurd if you figure that the average world income is $10 day. Literacy means nothing when all that is read is the internet – Tolstoy and friends are not read. And after all my gibberish from the cave, please tell me what your list has contributed the the real progress of an avaricious species that doesn’t give a shit for any thing else but itself.

            • burqa January 17th, 2015 at 07:06

              And sophisticated weapons are keeping the population down, you say?

                  • fahvel January 18th, 2015 at 19:52

                    any time is good if one knows what to do with their speck of existence.

                      So you would be just as happy without plumbing, soap, most tools, reliable sources of food without endless toil, dental care, ability to travel , and of course…commenting on the internet?

          • burqa January 17th, 2015 at 07:27

            Yup.
            I can remember a time when all our major cities had a brown cloud of pollution parked overhead. We called it “smog” back in the olden days.
            Then the government got to passing laws like the Clean Air Act and things got much better.

            Another advance has been the labor movement, which came out of the blue to scotch the growth of communism here and elsewhere. The labor movement helped improve workplace safety and get us something called a “weekend,” which was previously pretty much unknown.

            Weekends is cool, though I suppose SOMEONE around here will claim they are a product of war and power mongering.

            Another advance has been the whole industry around consumer protection. Products have to have in them what the label says and we got a lot better when we reduced or eliminated all kinds of things from food and other products. Product safety laws have made countless things betyter and saved many lives.

            I don’t know, maybe it DID have something to do with war and power mongering, somehow, but does anyone recall the flammable pajamas kids used to have?
            Yeah, there was a great demonstration on TV, showing how these pajamas worn by someone walking by a space heater or a lit cigarette would explode into flames instantly.

            We got a lot better as a people when we integrated our society. Maybe fahvel is too young to remember seeing football and basketball teams and coaching staffs on TV that were all white, as were the announcing crews, the entire Eyewitness News team on channel 4 and all the actors on TV (unless Sammy Davis Jr. was doing a guest appearance).

            The Women’s Liberation movement shattered glass ceilings and they’ve been able to move into many more areas of society where they were shut out previously.

            The Curt Flood case revolutionized professional sports, making it easier for athletes to go to different teams that wanted to employ them and pay much more.

            Today we are far better off in terms of getting equal rights for our gay citizens. I remember a time when no one would have believed gays are as widely accepted in our society as they are, and that gay marriage was spreading from sea to shining sea across the fruited plain.

            We also got better as a nation when baseball returned to the nation’s capital and the world became a bit more in balance with the universe.

          Too often we get caught up in bad news and complaining and miss the fact that we live in a world of stunning, surprising beauty. There are wonderful people all around us doing wonderful things for others. There are beautiful souls giving so much of themselves to help those in need. There are others doing things to beautify our communities, too.
          Like I always say – we see what we look toward, we find what we seek.
          Look toward beautiful things and seek them and you will find them.

    Well almost all of the US and UK media chickened out and didn’t show the cover of the latest Charlie Hebdo because it might offend religious extremists – so no there is absolutely no difference.

        And the others who did not are agreeing with the murderers in principle – they just disagree on tactics – their cowardice gives strength to the wrong side of the argument.
        If you volunteer to give up your rights to freedom of speech so easily, and at a time when such a commitment is needed more than ever, you really should not be in the publishing or news business.

        • burqa January 17th, 2015 at 15:36

          I think we both feel they should have run the cover and had it on every news stand around the world, that was my initial opinion. One thought that gives me pause is considering whether they would have run it on the front page otherwise.
          But when it comes to running it, the pres should have known if they all did it at the same time there would be strength in numbers and the bad guys would know they couldn’t strike everywhere.

    But hey, check it out. In the paper’s photo, right over the shoulder of the black guy is Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts!
